How is Kandi Burruss’ TAGS boutique doing?

Sandra Rose, a local blogger who focuses on African-American pop culture with an emphasis on Atlanta, wrote a piece today saying “Real Housewives of Atlanta” cast member Kandi Burruss’ TAGS boutique was on the verge of closing.

Here’s an excerpt:

It looks like the bad economy has claimed yet another casualty. According to industry insiders, TAGS Boutique, owned by Real Housewives of Atlanta cast member Kandi Burruss and her business partner Hortense Chin, will be closing its doors for good soon.

Friends say sales of affordable clothing and accessories at TAGS aren’t brisk enough to keep the doors open. This, despite the fact that Kandi Burrus, who is listed as the CEO on the business license, is supposedly the most popular cast member on Real Housewives of Atlanta.

I just got on the phone with Kandi and she categorically denied the story. “It was a shock to me,” she said. Rose, she added, never bothered to contact Kandi before posting the story.

“Our store is doing very very well,” she said. She acknowledged that January was slow but that’s a traditionally quiet month for clothing retail anyway. She said November and December were very strong and the boutique just added online shopping as well at www.tagsatl.com.

Rose’s story also noted that some customers have complained that the store hours are not regular. Kandi said it’s open 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. on weekdays and a bit longer on weekends. She said one would-be customer tried to come by yesterday and tweeted to her that it was closed. Kandi said staff was attending a benefit hosted by fellow Xscape singer and “Tiny & Toya” reality star Tameka “Tiny” Cottle yesterday. “It’s a boutique,” Kandi said. “We may close sometimes.”

The story also said Kandi’s partner Hortense Chin was annoyed that Kandi was focused on other projects. “That’s a lie,” Kandi said. “She’s the one who was really mad about the story. She’s not used to people talking about her on the blogs.”

“She and I get along great,” she added.

Kandi said Bravo has also told her to not say a thing about the show. (Last week, she said to me she was still angling to be on season three but hadn’ t signed a final contract yet.)  That tells me they must be getting very close to putting the cast together so everything is in lockdown. The show is scheduled to start shooting next month.

In the meantime, Kandi will be on “Who Wants To Be a Millionaire” tomorrow and Thursday at 9:30 a.m. on WATL-TV locally. (Check your local listings if you’re outside of Atlanta.) She will be helping a “real housewife” out with pop culture questions, some of which will be about “The Real Housewives” franchise.

TAGS Boutique is located at 4500 West Village Place in Smyrna. It’s off I-285 and Atlanta Road. I attended the opening late last year. My wife, the fashionista, liked the clothing, which is dubbed trendy but affordable.

It’s Sandra Rose people. ATL’s resident sh*t starter. She’s quite the creative writer. But Rodney, she no longer does her photog bit so can you say you’ve seen her anywhere in 2 years? Makes you wonder where her “sources” come from.

Professional journalists go to the source when possible. Kandi being busy with other projects shouldn’t affect her business partner’s running of things when she’s away. Both should try not to be gone during business hours or hire a third staffer.

Umm Kandi… Yes Tags is a boutique; which means it’s a business and please tell me what business you know stays affloat with unpredictable hours.. Why is your ENTIRE staff attending a fundraiser during business hours? That’s bad business sense dear.. When customer can’t depend on you to be open regularly why would they waist the gas to “come see IF you are open”…

As for whether or not the story about the boutique closing is true.. time will tell.. if it’s a lie.. we’ll know b/c it will stay open.. if it’s the truth… we’ll know b/c it will CLOSE..

Celebrities are not RELIABLE sources.. they lie like rugs… so she could be talking out her rear to maintain sales until she closes to save face.. who knows.. they all have an agenda..

I hope her store does well. However I think the website could use a few updates, the models bodies are a little too frumpy making those clothes look unappealing.

Just because a place is considered (or calls itself) a “boutique” does not mean it should have irregular hours. A retail store is a retail store regardless of what you call it, and if customers come by and you’re closed during what many would consider “normal business hours”, those people will go elsewhere. They will also tell others you were closed as well, who won’t waste their time in Atlanta traffic to drive to you hoping you’ll happen to be open at the moment. It’s a domino effect that WILL over time, close your business.

A hit dog will holler. It’s funny one has to start some sh*t to get an unprofessional ‘professional’ off Twitter and address her issues. I’m sure the ‘would-be’ shopper is not the only one who had this problem, it just took Sandra Rose to expose the tacky that we all know Kandi is capable of.

Seriously, why doens’t Kandi and Hortense hire someone one to keep the shop open? If it’s an issue of (not having the) money to hire, why not get a few student interns (free labor in exchange for a grade) to handle things while she’s out holding court at the ‘Nail Bar’? Any real business person with a mind for business knows to use all options. If there’s money to be made, with her stank attitude, Kandi won’t be making much of it.

Affordable clothing for who? Sorry Since when is 149 bucks for a pair of jeans affordable? Or 25 dollars for a tee shirt? Not to mention the 81 dollar Hoodie?

Please tell me, who are the people who THINK these prices are affordable?

@Sofine I have to agree with you.. if the clothes on the website is any indication of what is being sold in store then they have a problem… She shouldn’t have shouted out that site until all of the work is done.. You don’t release an incomplete product.. most of the tabs don’t work.. the clothes looks cheap and are expensive.. Who the heck wants to pay over $100 for jeans for that trash.. when I can get the same designed clothes from a staple online store like babyphat for example.. All the clothes look the same and the seasons are all off.. She has summer stuff, winter stuff, and spring.. Make up your mind… Know your market…

TRUE… In the states, there is no excuse (unless an emergency) for a shop to just close up. It gets you a rep – FAST! Not going to name names but the people in the SERVICE INDUSTRY who I’ve encountered this with have all had some sort of Black Hollywood connection that they’ve built their name off of. If I have a nail appointment and I’m charged for being 5 min late, you better be in your shop or salon and not out sipping apple martinis at a lameass, trife event or skip town to work the BET Awards. In the Caribbean and smaller communities I accept it as a reality and whoever runs the shop is near by anyway, but ATLANTA has some boot straps to pull up in this area big time. Not saying Tags is one of them (never been) but it has gotten way out of hand.

LOL @ the Poser comment! I would LOVE to out some people on this. OMG, it’s so tempting. Side bar: $25 isn’t alot for some Ts not on sale. I’ll have to check to see what you all are referring to. And $100 is the low end of the going rate for jeans. Ask the jean bandits. However, I’m Old Navy for life!

@TheStandard I like you love my $19.99 jeans from old navy and I would go so far as to pay $85 at best for some jeans but that’s b/c I live to my means.. over a $100 bucks is cool if you can afford it.. but Kandi advertises as if everyone can afford $147 dollar jeans… in this economy… who does that? and if they are.. I hope they have a JOB… and not a pole..

Re: Kandi’s boutique comment. My only guess on this one is that boutique shops tend to have shorter hours (6 hrs/day) versus other stories (9-9 or 10-9/day). Either way, the point is the same. Whatever you post as your hours, you SHOULD be there and have the store open at the time.

I LOVE TAGS! A few weeks ago, I took a friend from out of town and we had a great time. The clothes were cute and extremely affordable for boutique prices. We hit up the clearance rack- I got a sexy top for $10!. I was battling with my friend because we’re almost the same size. They even have some plus-size clothes.

The men’s clothing is more expensive, but that’s just one of the things that sucks about being a man. I’d be mad if I went out there and the shop was closed, but I’d definitely keep going back.

LMAO @ Sofine!

Also, I agree I do not consider her store affordable to those that are living pay check to pay check. I will not pay more than $50 for a pair of jeans or no more than $20 for a t-shirt I don’t care how cute it is.

I honesty think that Bravo is paying Sandra Rose for the publicity. She knows these stories are not true, just like she threw Phaedra under the bus about her husband. I also think she is being paid by the Republican or the Tea Party to trash talk the Obama Administration.

@TheStanfard…you also need to check your info before you blast or say something that is not true..you can purchase babyphat jeans at Walmart and people pay $25 for tees from Aeropostle and American Eagle…but if you want to pay for something at her boutique just to say you got it from there then you should be able to do that without any issues…people need to get a clue and a life and stop worrying about what others are doing with their money…just because they can’t afford it.
