Jeff Dauler off Q100 – for now

Q100 management took Bert Show co-host Jeff Dauler off its Web site last week and not surprisingly, took him off the air today.

His contract expired December 31, 2009. Clearly, he did not sign a contract since last Wednesday, when Q100 excised him off the Q100 Web site, something he did not see coming. But he remains in negotiations for a new contract. He told me last week that the talks have been going on since July. Obviously, things did not go smoothly. His agent B.B. Abbott said last week even if he is off the air, this does not mean talks are over.

Management often tells shows to ignore personnel matters on air. But you have to give Q100 credit: Bert talked about it today at 7:20 a.m. He said Jeff’s deadline is Friday. If Cumulus (Q100’s owner) and Jeff do not come to an agreement by then, he won’t be back on the Bert Show, Bert said.

Bert said he wants Jeff back but he does not make the final decision. “I don’t sign his paycheck,” Bert said. He was involved in the talks the past six to eight weeks, trying to be the ambassador between the parties, he said. It was an “emotional roller coaster,” he noted. “I went above and beyond to make sure Jeff is part of the show. Jeff and his agent has had tough times with Cumulus… I have done everything I can.” But he now dubs it a “stalemate.”

UPDATE: Last week, I got a firm “no comment” from Q100 operations manager Rob Roberts about the negotiations. But Roberts’ boss John Dickey, who oversees programming for Cumulus Broadcasting as a whole, sent a listener a note this morning:

I am working hard to keep Jeff. What you read in the AJC is not true. Should come as no surprise that the newspaper had it wrong. That’s why their readership has fallen so dramatically. Keep listening. Thanks.

Dickey, in an email at 1 p.m. today, declined to comment about the negotiations beyond this statement: “It would be logical to think that jeff was facing a cut but that is not the issue.” He doesn’t deny a pay cut is in the offing but also doesn’t say what the actual issue is if it’s not just about the cash.

Jenn Hobby and Melissa Carter on air also said they want him back and are having a hard time believing that Dauler might be gone for good. “I need someone to fuss at,” Carter said.

Is Jeff Dauler worth keeping on the Bert Show?

“He might have felt it was a disrespectful offer,” Bert said, in response to a caller saying it was Jeff’s decision to move on. “Change could be a good thing,” the caller said. “Jeff chose not to take what was offered.”

Bert said, “this show is better with Jeff than without Jeff… this show is based on balance. When one person is out, something is missing.” He has not considered a replacement until Jeff’s deal is truly dead.

“I dont think it’s going to be a big loss,” said another listener, who said the others should take pay cuts to help Jeff out. Bert said that was offered.

“Personal shots at Jeff today are unfair,” Carter said, since Jeff isn’t around to defend himself.

Dauler confirmed on his Web site today that negotiations are on going. He listed 10 items of concern to fans. Here are three:

3. This is still a ‘pending negotiation.’ I have not left The Bert Show and Q100. Sometimes these things get … um … challenging. Remember when you were a kid and you wanted to do something and your parents said ‘no’ and you got mad at them so you ran away but only to behind your garage and you thought like 6 days had passed so you went home but it was only 45 minutes and your Mom still loved you? This process is nothing like that. This process is nothing like anything I’ve ever experienced, which is why I had to insert a totally pointless analogy.

7. I will have answers this week. I promise. If no answers, then I promise to promise you answers the following week.

8. What have I been doing? De-cluttering the house. Trying to think of resolutions that I won’t break till March. Searching CumulusJobs.com Monster.com. Hanging with friends and spending time alone. Not drinking as much as I would have thought I would have been.

From what I hear, Dauler doesn’t make anywhere near what Bert Weiss makes but has done just fine, taking home well into the six figures in annual salary and benefits.

Unfortunately, these are challenging economic times. Revenues are down despite the fact the Bert Show is a top performer in the ratings, behind only Frank & Wanda at V-103 among 18 to 34 year olds and a top 4 performer among 25 to 54 year olds. Q100 certainly offered Jeff a pay cut, possibly a sizable one. He is unwilling to take it. Thus, they are now stuck.

Questions: at whatever pay Q100 is offering him, could he do any better elsewhere in this environment? Does he have any possible job offers elsewhere? Could anyone afford him at whatever price he’s asking? Is he worth it? He has built brand equity in this market after eight-plus years. He gets endorsements through Q100. He gets free advertising for his Flying Biscuit franchise. His wife Jessica gets to do her “Jessica Shops” segments and promote her Web site. Without knowing the dollar figures involved, it’s hard to say who’s being fair and who’s not. But ultimately, it’s the Bert Show, not the Jeff Dauler Show.

Can the Bert Show survive without Jeff? It’s similar as saying, is “Idol” okay without Paula Abdul?

Keep Jeff. Wendy should go. She can’t read a traffic report! Count how many times she says “like,” too.

(Yes, I realize that Jeff’s salary is a lot bigger than Wendy’s.)

Jeff is the one who gets nasty and raunchy on air. Yeah, we need more of that. HARDLY!!!!

While most of America is just hoping to not get fired right now, he’s not willing to take a pay cut? Teach him a lesson.

Jeff is not necessary for the show to be successful and within 6 months we will all say Jeff Who? I would like to see Bert hire an African American male to replace Jeff to really complete the diversity of the show and reflect the make up of all the listeners. Bert is always talking about how he wishes Atlanta would not be so racially divided, here’s a chance for him to put his money where his mouth is.

Jeff can come back, I guess, but only if he learns the correct usage of the pronouns “I” and “me”. He’s quite egotistical, so those two words are probably the most used in his vocabulary…and, more often than not, he uses them incorrectly. Makes me nuts…

Jeff should take a pay cut or find another job. Just because he is in the public eye shouldn’t give him any more benefit to get that job back at higher dollars than any one else in the market with any other job, If he was that important to the show they would have no problem signing him back and this would have never been an issue.

Please Bert Show, Please cut the volume of your background music during the “Entertainment Report”, “Traffic Updates” and Melissa’s “Five Things You Need To Know”. It is way too loud. I can’t even hear the talking.

Also, keep Jeff, but make him get a haircut. Please cut the music.

If Jeff feels like he is worth more then he shouldnt come back. You have to respect someone that is not willing to settle…like so many people out there do. The ratings will definitely go down without him on the show.

Show sucks anyway. TRG is by far the best Cumulus has to offer in Atlanta. Q100 is like listening to Oprah and Ellen all mixed into one. Can almost make your head explode!!!

Had to write, because I am in the “Bert Show” wouldn’t be as good without Jeff camp. I’ve written to Cumulus this morning to say so. Jeff is the only conservative voice on the show. He’s also the only cast member who truly “tells it like it is.” Jeff’s level of “snark” may offend some, but I think it brings balance to the show. I will follow Jeff, if he stays in Atlanta… hope he stays on Q100!!

Jeff is the only intelligent person on the show. Without Jeff’s slight edginess, we end up with a show of 3 women. Yeah I didn’t forget Bert.

Here we go again… let’s hire someone without regard to their qualifications… BUT THEY HAVE TO BE BLACK.

I think we already did that for our mayor you freakin idiot. Whoever you are that posted that… please pay attention to why our beloved city has been run into the ground because of black leadership. Do you want examples?

Corruption downtown? Skyrocketed… controlled by blacks
Crime? Skyrocketed… disproportionately perpetrated by blacks
Entitlement? You just made my case there… earn your job
Education? Lowest test scores in the country…

What is the answer? Racism is white people’s fault. Nah. Hire a black guy on the radio, that will fix it. IGNORANCE IS BLISS.

During the 2009 elections, Jeff said he wouldn’t discuss politics with anyone who couldn’t state 3 things they liked about the candidate who wasn’t getting their vote. Excellent advice! The liberals on the program couldn’t do that. (Melissa & Jenn) Cumulus, if you replace Jeff, please make the person a conservative! Loved Jeff’s story about his neighbors!

Ditto above poster… can’t believe people talk about getting rid of Jeff and hiring someone just because they are black. Half the country did that for our president… looks like that isn’t working out too well. At least our president bought us a bunch of cars. Can’t even keep us safe on our airplanes anymore though. Take the bus.

To those of you that constantly talk about Sirius/XM – that’s not the point. I’m a 3 year Sirius subscriber and I love it and hope that it has a viable future. That being said, terrestrial/local radio is far from dead. The percent of people that have Sirius/XM is still quite low. That means plenty of people are still listening to FM/AM radio. If the topic is about satellite, by all means spout off, but this is about Jeff. As for my opinion – eh – I can take or leave him!

HMmmm Jeff’s contract not being renewed….I wonder if it has to do with his political views? I have been a listener since day 1 and if Jeff goes I will quit listening. He is the only one I agree with on most issues. Jenn is a fake, Melissa is only on here to get her gay views heard, Wendy oh give me a break…she can’t find a serious relationship, try staying out of the bars. Bert is good but I can’t stand the show without Jeff’s comments. I already turned it off this morning. I guess we will wait and see what happens.

While I think that Jeff should not be asking for a raise in these days where we are all afraid of losing jobs and taking on extra responsibilites….Why don’t they just get rid of Wendy and give her salary to the others – make them all take turns doing the traffic. Anything has to be better than Wendy with her like and ums….

Keep Jeff, get rid of his wife. I’m thinking the paycut must have been pretty extreme for the negotiations to go this far and not get worked out. I wonder if the percentage of the cut was more than the rest of the cast members. If they were all asked to take a 10% paycut then Jeff should suck it up but if he was asked to take 20% and everyone else is taking 10, then I agree- fight it.

Jeff drives everyone insane at times but I agree that he brings balance to the show and even if he goes, someone of similar mindset would have to be brought in to replace him otherwise the show gets boring. Who will all the cast members have to argue with if Jeff isn’t around???

The four have contracts that end at different times. They do not negotiate in tandem. Bert signed a five-year deal in early 2007. Not sure when Melissa and Jenn’s contracts are up.

In between the stupid moms crying for New Moon tickets and the latest Miley update and any other teenage girl obsession there is, Jeff is the only one to give that show some balance and edge. For me, it will be unlistenable without him. Today, I had to hear that Miss Congeniality was a great movie. But, their target demo probably isn’t the “money demo” (me), so they probably don’t want him.

This is the only decent morning show in Atlanta (and even I left them for Opie & Anthony on XM) Jeff should take a look at what Jimmy and Barnes went through in the last few years – there are too many radio personalitites out there and not enough stations willing to try them out..especially if he is not willing to move to another city (like Steve Craig or Toucher did)

Why is this even a race issue? This is about a contract dispute. C’mon people! Get over yourselves! If you don’t like him, don’t listen…otherwise you wouldn’t care anyways. Radio shows come and go…and the Bert Show has been around for a long while WITH Jeff. Perhaps it’s the beginning of the end. There is a life cycle in everything. I’d probably not listen if he doesn’t rejoin the show only because he balances the show. I’d just find something else to listen to…

Jeff should start a podcast ala Adam Carolla and move on. Did anyone consider that his new business ventures have given him the income to allow him to stand on principle.

Also, we are not all afraid of losing our jobs. Some of us are smart enough to be self employed and don’t rely on some benevolent entity to pay us for posting comments on AJC.com.

Keep Jeff. He balances the show. Without him it becomes a sad soap opera.

I am guessing that neither Bert, Jenn, or Melissa received pay cuts. If that is so, then Jeff should not be expected to take one.

Wendy is also a balance …. for the much younger audience they want to attract.

What most people don’t realize is how much OTHER $$ he gets to endorse products on the show and how much he and his wife get from promoting her segment and website. Every show needs its rebel rouser and he has certainly made the most of his position touting his “celebrity” friendships…guess he could use those “celebrity” friendships to get another job.

Lara, I agree. Just give Wendy’s salary to Jeff and have one of the remaining four read the traffic reports. Wendy, please read it to yourself before you try to read it on the air! Why do you say “Wendy with Q100″ at the end? Keep Jeff.

Jeff gives balance to the cast he is needed. But on the other side, if the whole show was taken off it would be no great loss. I’m a regular listerner to TRG, but will chime in on the Bert show, but lately every time I listen to them, they have somebody on using the voice changer, talking about nothing. Boring…. It’s a radio version of the View.

Having lived downtown for 21 years and now living outside city limits, I’m happy to say Atlanta is not my city. Enjoy the budget deficit, out-of-control homelessness, increase in violent crime, reverse racist police force, dead-after-5:00 downtown, ancient infrastructure, contaminated public water supply, a legacy of the most embarrassing Olympics in history, 70% vacancy rates in new housing AND office space and the distinction of being American’s most toxic city (Forbes, 2009). Black leadership has certainly done wonders for this city over the last 4 decades.

Been a Bert listener for many years (even when he was new kid on the block at Mix 107.3 in DC) so keep him. Melissa should do the news AND the traffic (Wendy is just not very good at traffic.)

But Jeff…he can be very funny, arrogant, obnoxious, right, and lots of other descriptive terms. He adds to the show and detracts from the show all at the same time, because he is an entertainer.
However, in the continuing economic conditions we have, just keeping your job at same pay is pretty good right now. Greed is bad, and he will find himself off the air with little fanfare if he won’t play ball, and soon it will be” remember that Jeff guy? He was funny.”

Nobody is irreplaceable.
