Essence magazine names Steve Harvey entertainer of the year

Steve Harvey 2009

Atlanta resident Steve Harvey has been successful as a  stand-up comic, a TV sitcom star and a radio host. But it’s his role as relationship guru that has propelled him to best-selling author.

Essence magazine named him entertainer of the year, placing him and his wife Marjorie on the cover. “Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man” has sold more than 1.5 million copies, earning him two trips to Oprah’s show and a “Good Morning America” correspondent job. Screen Gems even wants to turn his book into a movie.

The cover story outlines how he met Marjorie (and it would take awhile before they finally got married) and showed pictures of his opulent home overlooking the Chattahoochee River. The man’s living well, with two accountants, a nanny, a chef, a personal fitness trainer and two personal assistants in his house while the Essence reporter was there. And he’s happy, much happier than he was with his previous wife, a divorce that ended bitterly.

“The thing I’ve learned,” he told Essence, “is that you can make a lot of mistakes and you can mess up real bad and God can fix you up anyway.”

They brought kids from multiple past marriages together in Atlanta and are working to make it work.

The story is not online. It’s only in the print edition so you’ll have to pick it up on the newsstand if you don’t already have a subscription.

I wouldn’t say he’s been successful. I thought he died a few years ago until I read this article. What else has he done besides like showtime at the Apollo?

What the heck is “Essence” magazine? And does anyone think that magazines which cater to one race are really healthy?

Steve & Marjorie are really great folks. We’ve had the pleasure of being in their home several times as event staff..and EVERYONE is so nice. The children are so kind, not bratty and above all respectful to adults. ITs a pleasure to do work there.

@ Karen – Steve Harvey has a nationally syndicated morning show, a book that has been on the best selling list for months, An “on occasion” host on Good Morning America, and has a very successful clothing line. He also has an awesome foundation…one in particular that mentors young men.
Look it up – http://www.steveharvey.com

Grammatical correction – “for months, an “on occasion”…

No need to apologize nor correct your grammar, “Chocolate Doll”. I get your point.

You see, that’s why I could have never accused white people of being prejudice; that’s too easy for them to have a free pass out. It’s called “laziness”. They will go to an Asian or a Mexican restaurant and adopt their practices all day long, but refused to engage or learn anything about their ancestry ex-slaves.

LORD PLEASE HELP ME!

(And please don’t ask me how did I know that Karen is white? Because no Black person would be that retarded)

@ Mark….lol. CO-SIGNING….. I keep telling people, NOTHING has changed! I don’t care if we were in the year 2090!!!!
Not to mention “Peachtree Pete” asking what Essence magazine is (blank stare). We know what GQ is. We know what Vogue is. We know what Cosmopolitan is. I could go on, but I’m not.

Thanks babe :)

^^^EXACTLY^^^ Couldn’t have said it better Mark and Chocolate Doll. Why is there Latina Magazine or any other magazine that caters to women of color?? Because the “Mainstream” still sees Blonde hair and Blue eyes as the “Status Quo” of beauty. Pretty obvious, all you have to do is look in any of those magazines mentioned above and count the non-White women. But, of course we are always accused of “whining” about racism or having a “victim mentality” again. **Sigh** The more things change, the more they stay the same.

Love Steve Harvey! He gives inspiration, encouragment and motivation to people of all races, not just people of color but the difference is WE GET IT! His career spans 25 yrs. in telivison, film, radio, print, and fashion. His foundation gives back and as was stated earlier sponsors an annual retreat for 100 young men again, of all races on his ranch in TX. The Steve Harvey Morning show is the best morning show on the air.
