Who won ‘Dancing With the Stars’?

Donny Osmond DWTS

The Osmond magic didn’t get Marie to the “Dancing With the Stars” trophy season five but her brother Donny redeemed her loss Tuesday night two years later.

It was obviously R&B singer Mya’s to lose after getting 87 to 90 points Monday. But lifelong entertainer Donny kept it close, garnering 85 and on one dance, his first perfect score. If this show were purely about skill, the judges would have crowned Mya. But Donny’s popularity with the voters and impressive showmanship pushed him past the finish line.

The youthful 51 year old was the first contestant over the age of 40 to win the title after nine seasons. And it was all the more impressive considering he was commuting to Las Vegas every week to do a show with his sister.

Kelly Osbourne lagged behind at 76 points and was the first one eliminated at 10:54 p.m. EST.

Kelly showed moxie throughout the competition and wore her heart on her sleeve on and off the stage. She improved week after week. She came across much better than her younger, petulant teen self on the MTV show many years ago.

Was Donny's victory deserved?

With two hours to kill for what could take ten minutes, the padding was thicker than a Shrek costume. Here is a quick recap of the first one hour and 54 minutes:

Recaps. Alex Mazo dancing. Recaps. Whitney Houston. Recaps. Jeffrey Ross’s ultra-pale body. Recaps. Adam Corolla attempting humor. Best of dances from each of the three finalists. Tom DeLay. Michael Irvin. Aaron Carter. Muppets. Jerry Springer, Cloris Leachman and Steve Wozniak back again in a mock danceoff with Joanna Krupa. Whitney one more time.

Mya was great but its much harder to learn the lead male rule in this type of dancing. Donnie got so good toward the end He was keeping up with the male pros. Its way harder to lead than to follow in dancing. He is also 51 yrs old so Mya is half his age. You want to talk about robbed why was Kelly there? Aaron Carter was a much better dancer than even Mya but they didnt like the kid? But Donnie was the BEST.

Well duh… people act like they are surprised that these “call in your votes” reality shows are popularity contests. If people really were voting simply for the best dancers, it would have come down to Mya and Joanna — but they don’t. They vote for the story… Who improves the most? Who is the most likeable? It is then balanced out a bit by the reasonably unbiased judges. The judges scores between Donny and Mya were essentially tied, so it came down to who got the most votes — and Donny won. While I don’t disagree that Mya was the best dancer, I don’t feel cheated that Donny won, nor would I had Kelly won. The show is there for entertainment — watching how the star performs under pressure and improves over time. It is kind of a good life story — sometimes the person with a little less talent, but an outstanding attitude and eagerness can take the prize.

Stella, you pretty much nailed it. The freestyle was what did in Mya and elevated Donny.

For all you posting about how great Mya was during the whole season (and she was), it doesn’t matter. This is not a cumulative vote. If it was, Kelly wouldn’t have made it into the finals. It is all about making it into the final three, and doing your best on that one night, including the extra dance last night (which Donny also nailed, btw. And even when he was messing up earlier in the season when he had the flu, he still entertained us better than anyone we’ve seen on that show in a long while.

Kelly gets props for growing, Mya gets props for consistency, but Donny gets the trophy for being better when it counts.

Seriously, it was a good finale. Both deserved to win. I hope this endless chatter is just because you’re bored waiting on the turkey to defrost and the junk at Target to go on sale.

I think they all were good, but Mya was the better dancer. I feel Donnie won because of who he was , not what he did. Does make u think it is a little fix. Kelly what a wonderful smile, keep it up

Who cares? It is a popularity contest and talent has minor effect. It just gives you sheep something to talk about, whether it’s racism or whatever…grow up, get a life and chill. What a bunch of whiny little girls with skinned knees you people tend to be over the smallest things….

You guys really make me worry about the citizens of the United States. Any show that involves viewers votes is going to be about more than just talent. Those of you pathetic enough to think it has anything to do with religion or race are idiots. We don’t care who’s black or who’s white…we care about who is classy and who is trashy. People need to grow up and care about real issues Instead of getting angry over a stupid tv show.

Would you hire someone based on just their skill along and forget about personality? Not likely… Personality plays a big role and it looks like Donny took the trophy on that. They were all great dancers! Congrats to them all!

For quite some time second place winners on American Idol have surpassed the winners. So why fret about it and raise such a stink. Mya is still a winner… They all did really good; Don’t define yourself based on a number…

I think that Mya was ROBBED. The should change the name of the show to match more with what the true out come of the votes are….Dancing with bull. This show has once again disapponited me and many others. They took it from Mel B and now Mya. They even took the opportunity from Lil Kim and Mario. I will never watch this show again. If more people turn away maybe then they will go back to the table and decided that the winner will be judged by skills and not just on who you are! Donny is a nice guy and I am sure that he is a good entertainer, however he should not have been given the GLASS BALL as he calls it. He is not the true winner. Mya you are the winner and he knows this as well as the Dancing with Stars committee. You are the BEST!

DWTS?!?! Is this really what we’re arguing about? No wonder the country is in the toilet. We care more about pseudo celebrities dancing on tv than what’s really going on in the world. Oh yeah, and our ability to turn every “perceived” slight into racial discrimination is top notch. Well done!

Donny had/have been performing and dancing before I was even born. I knew he won when he got on stage singing “Puppy Love.” I could won too if my sister worked for ABC…now that’s conflict of interest. DWTS is rigged.

Even a blind person would have clearly seen that Mya should have won I guess the times haven’t really changed!

No, Kenneth, you’re right. The times haven’t changed one iota.
Even though we have a black man sitting as president, people still cry “RACISM” at every slight, real or imagined.
I thought Obama’s election was supposed to enable us to move on. Can we PLEASE move on? GOD!!

I just want to say that DWTS sucks. The best dancer never wins unless they are very popular. Mya was clearly the best dancer. Some retard said that Mya was a pro…If she is a pro Donny is far beyond that. Georgia said she didn’t like Mya because she(Mya) thinks she’s better than everyone. Wow…I think your name really say why you don’t like Mya. First name (Georgia)–Middle name(Red)–Last name (Neck). That was good right!!! Steverino there is a “black man sitting as president”, but that is not a treatment for “Racism”. People always talking about moving on, well it’s easy to move if you’ve never been enslaved, hanged, murdered, raped, spat on, segregated and many other degrading acts. The Jewish community didn’t just move on,their still deporting and prosecuting Nazi war criminals. We can’t even get apologies for crimes committed against us during the 50s and 60s. Move on my arse. By the way stop calling him “OBAMA”. Why can’t President Obama get the same respect as the ones before him…Steve I am sure it’s not “Racism” because we have moved on from that right? Anyway the show still sucks

I missed the show last night but have it taped to watch. I am glad that Mya didn’t win. I felt she was snobby through the whole season. I would have loved to see Kelly win because she was the only one who came into this with no real dance experience. How can she compete against 2 who have have a dancing background. I thought that was what DWS was about. Now that I hear that some of the stars get paid for every week they win….. I don’t know if I will watch it again. Yes Mya may have been the best dancer, but I felt Kelly improved the most over the season and I feel she deserved it

Maya was the best dancer of all and should have won. The competition rules are unfair – Donny’s fame got him more votes, not his skills. This show is bogus! I am no longer watching it.

About S.J. and her ‘contract’. Does anyone think she is the only one with such a contract? All the celebs are paid and on contract. The only difference is that S.J. being a minor ended up with a public contract while all the others were kept private.

“Georgia Girl” get a life and stop referring to anyone as you people. Racism will never die as long as you refer to minorities as “you people”. It’s such ashame that race has to be brought into everything regardless whether the case study is good or bad. Mya was indeed the best contestant; however, most saw her skin tone and cast a vote for Donny. If any of us had as much money as Oprah Winfrey we certainly wouldn’t have time to blog about DWTS. Stop the hate and marginalizing everyone you think you know. I am sure most of you have never sat down to lunch or dinner with someone outside of your race. I challenge you morons to do just that you may learn something…. “LEARN” what a big word it scares most of you….

Donny Clearly Won On His Amazing Dancing Skills, His Talent Is Endless, As Well As His Thoughtfulness Of Others, This Was Clearly Seen In His Dedication Not Only With This Show, But With Anything He Envisions, Donny Puts His Whole Spirit Into Anything He Does,And is Remarkable, Talented In Many Things.
But Most Important For Viewers To Understand , There Are Allot Of Talented People In This World And The Outcome Does Not Always Meet Others Expectations..Be Proud That We Have The Freedoms To Enjoy And Embrace Everyone We See, Or Don’t Get To See Those Individuals That Celebrate Life And Take Pride Within..This My Friends Is Life..And We Do All Win When We Wipe The Mud From Our Eyes And Clearly See..

Mya may not be a professional, but she started ballet lessons at 2 years old, later adding tap and jazz. She studied dancing until her early teens when she switched to singing. She had an unfair advantage and shouldn’t have been on the show. She probably would have won if her free style wasn’t so boring and safe. Kelly screwed up pretty bad, but at least she tried to do some interesting moves. Donny’s freestyle was great and he deserved the perfect score he got.

Folks be real, Mya should have this season and the think Donnie was close to getting eliminated the other week. Come on. That’s why competition like these shouldn’t be based on fans voting but only on skill cause if fans like a person’s popularity they will vote for who they want regardless. And its the same in the sports world. But watch, this show is going to end up fading away like Idol if this type of thing keeps up.

There is no way Donnie should have won this competion, he should have been kicked off weeks ago!! The truth is Mya has been a great dancer throughout. Whether she should have been allowed on the show or not because of her dance history is irrelevant!!! As a contestant she surpassed Donnie by far and was the better dancer!! To be honest Donnies big mouth and over exaggerated expressions are what helped him along as we all know he is a has been!!!

I was astonished that Donny beat out Mya. Mya was the best dancer on the show and she is a professional singer not a professional dancer. I wonder what the ratings would have been if Mya, Joanna and Aaron were not on the show. Would so many people tune in to watch a 50 year old man dance and win? I will not watch DWTS anymore. The show is biased and the criticisms were very unfair to Mya in comparison to the criticisms made about the other contestants. The show is a clear reminder of the prejudice in the world. The moral of the show ” you don’t have to be the best to win. If Donny really believes he beat Mya he is out of touch with reality!

Well, if everyone agrees that “the whole state of Utah,” and “All the Mormons” voted for Donny – so be it. Where were all the African Americans who should have voted for Mya, then, huh?

Swampscott, Ma

November 25th, 2009

you are right – the show is not just about pure talent, or Mya would have won & so would Guilles and Cherly – who lost to Shawn Johnson (good dancer) and Mark Ballas. Both pairs lost to a dancer with a bigger fan base. I am not only disapointed to see this happend again but so annoyed with myself to have forgotton that it is that way. Last night when the judges gave Donnie a 30 the ground shifted and it was obvious then that the fix is in. Interesly about the judges – and by the majority – it seems.
So, if you only want them to be judged by their talent then let them be judged by a panel of judges. When you bring in viewing voting who can vote up to 5X each using mulitple ports you take the professionalism out of it. So, what we must remember if we choose to be disapponted again is – this is not all about talent – it is really about what a talented dancer can bring and do for ABC – and then they can pretend it is all about talent…

The chap who used the name of a black shakedown artist, Jesse Jackson as his handle demonstrates in his post at 11:18 why racism will never die in America. Too many blacks won’t let it die because they believe they can’t achieve without additional help and that they can guilt people forever. They drag phantom racism accusations into everything, even a frivolous dance contest.

Black slavery in America ended 150 years ago. Equal civil rights came into force 50 years ago. Affirmative action has been going on for over 3 decades. And still, it’s not enough. People who have never suffered slavery keep banging on at people who have never inflicted slavery.

The world is full of much fresher injustice, like a hundred million killed by communists within living memory or a half a million civilians including women and children slaughtered in Darfur by Muslim militias in current events. When their survivors arrive in America, which is still the land of opportunity, not even speaking English, they are thankful for the gift of freedom and live law abiding productive lives.

Present day American blacks who have not suffered nearly as much should do the same. Name one country where blacks have it better. There are none. American blacks who are still using old historical injustices to excuse their various ongoing pathologies like high crime rate against both other blacks and whites should trade places with a black in Africa where blacks run things. African blacks would appreciate the opportunity and make the most of it. Surprise, there are never any takers on this side of the ocean. They want to have their cake (live in America) and eat it too (endlessly complain about being done hard done by).

Had this been a real contest where a panel of experienced judges made the final decision, Mya would have taken it hands down, no questions, period! Just like in the finals of American Idol, David Archuleta is good, but Adam Lambert was by far the best performer. Mya if you are reading this…You won baby! Donny can now thank all his fans and not his talent for pushing his win.

What the hell does racism have to do with this blog. And if anyone does care, it does still exist, its just isolated, and some people probably have experienced it before in some situation. So before you speak make sure you know what you talking about.

Drew

Atl Resident, don’t repeat a post when your response shows you haven’t read or understood it. My post as I make clear in the first sentence was in response to several comments that dragged racism in to this blog unnecessarily. I was actually agreeing with you that a dance show blog is not the place to start a discussion on racism but you missed the point entirely that several people above claimed Mya lost because she was (half)-black.

Your own comment re racism: “if anyone does care, it does still exist, its just isolated, and some people probably have experienced it before in some situation” is vague and mushy and hardly meets your own criterion that you should know what you’re talking about before you speak.

Isolated racism with some people “probably” experiencing it “somewhere” is the lowest level of racism one can get in any nation of 350 million. And much of that racism is by blacks against whites, not just the reverse. Every time even a partly black person gets passed by these race baiters call it racism when there are at least ten more likely explanations proposed in the comments above.

I think it was a perfect balance–the judges’ opinions account for 1000 times the normal viewers’ opinions. Donnie’s popularity PLUS his one perfect score from the judges was enough to pull ahead for the victory fair and square. Mya’s performance was undeniably spectacular, but obviously not a favorite with the viewers (who indirectly comprise the network’s customer base).

I think Donny O. winning was fair. I don’t think Mya should of won it. She didn’t do very well in dancing even know her dancing other times they were good but not fantastic. I don’t think Mya was very popular and so there fore Donny won it fairly. Donny O is a better entertainer and showed very impressive showmanship. everyone who thinks that Mya should of won and was robbed, well too bad! Someone much better won! can’t wait to see what the show will offer next season.
