WSB-TV van, mast up, hits power line, gets fried

wsb-van_309925c

Wow, what a rush!

WSB-TV reporter Tom Jones and photographer Leonard Raglin were leaving the Fulton County jail yesterday in their van but forgot to take the mast down. It hit a power line, coursing 115,000 volts of energy into the van and the crowd, causing a loud explosion, destroyed the truck and generated a crater in the asphalt. Neither the AJC story nor the WSB story said who was driving though Doug Richards on his blog said it was Raglin.

Fortunately, both men survived with smoke inhalation and minor burns.

“Georgia Power workers on the scene were surprised anyone lived, said an APD spokesman in a statement. “The 115,000 volts traveled through the vehicle and ground, also hitting and destroying a water main which caused water to be out in the area.”

The mast is the telescoping pole used to send out live signals. It’s supposed to be lowered before putting the vehicle in motion. Richards provides some perspective about how an alarm should go off when the van goes into drive and surmises perhaps the alarm had been disabled or broken.

Below is rival Harry Samler of WGCL providing some coverage:

Interesting how all the other news stations covered this. Morris Diggs of Fox5 did a report last night, and when he threw it back to the studio Amanda Davis said that we are glad to hear that our friends over at Channel 2 are ok, Pretty classy, but you’ve got to think that WSB’s competition were just foaming at the mouth covering this story.

This really could have been tragic. I’m glad both men are okay.

Very classy remarks from Amanda Davis on channel Fox5.

Somebody will get fired. Those truck are suppose to not start with the mast up. It’s an OSHA violation to dis-engage that safety measure.

I think Slam’s point is that he is racist. Racist people are like children who feel neglected sometimes. Just need to say or do something to get the rest of the intelligent world’s attention.

WSB is the most sensational news show in ATL….. I’m sorry the van wrecked, but they will do anything for a trumped up story. And when are they going to dump that gorilla Monica?

So let me get this right, nobody is allowed to ask what the race of the drive is?

So if both the men are OK, why do they not know who was driving?

Ellen, don’t be racist. It doesn’t matter who was driving.

It’s racist comments like these that are ruining the south. A black man already stands no chance in the world, I face racism everyday and everywhere I go. Besides, everyone knows it’s the asians that can’t drive so take your racism and shove it.

Am I the only one that finds this accident comical? I mean, come on, if they did this in Dumb & Dumber you’d be laughing your butts off.

Jim’s comments about how classy the other stations have been about this unfortunate incident are spot on and have also been echoed by other contributors to this blog. He also mentioned that the”competition (the other stations) were just foaming at the mouth covering this story…” I bet they were, just like years ago at the old Eastern Airlines. They too were silently “foaming” or better yet “laughing to themselves” when competitor and arch rival Delta Airlines (then the airline that billed itself as the “Airline Run by Professionals”) landed at the wrong airport twice in the same week. Be it WSB or Delta, one can’t help but smile when they see the big guy ion the block brought down to size every now and then. Fortunately though for the guys in the WSB van and those on the two Delta aircraft, no one was physically hurt to any degree. Film at Eleven.

Seriously, who cares about the stations dumb competition with each other? Who cares that station A was foaming at the mouth to cover a story about station B? It’s like the special Olympics athletes arguing about who is the #1 athlete. These local crews all suck, hence why they are stuck in Atlanta. Therefore I conclude that they are all losers anyways, now stop interrupting my TV shows with your lame local high school caliber production nonsense.
