Are the Regular Guys too political?

I caught up with Rock 100.5’s Larry Wachs on Saturday at the Talk Show Boot Camp, where he was a panelist.

He said he’s heard complaints that the Regular Guys show has become too political, but he doesn’t feel the actual amount of political talk is any different from the past. The difference, perhaps, is the depth of their outrage over issues.

One thing he says they are going to work more on is to look more into the humor of politics, to “find the funny” like “The Daily Show” does.

He’s also psyched to be working with the Braves again. Despite some tension with manager Bobby Cox in the past while they were at 96rock, he said Cox likes the show and is looking forward to working with them on Rock 100.5 next year.

The Regular Guys has held steady this year under the new people meter measurements among older listeners but the past couple of months, its 18-34 numbers have been cut in half. That might be a sampling problem or an issue of content, or both. It’s hard to say.

They are too politically correct. The show has gotten really boring and re-hashed. It cracks me up that “ya come-on” is heavily used in the gay community so they don’t use it much anymore. Good stuff!

yea stoney i kind of agree with you on that. i think the regular guys don’t need to change a thing. they have a perfect mix of politics, pop culture, news and such to keep it flowing — plus a little tittilation on the side. they’re a solid morning show that’s not going away any time soon.

I agree with Larry about the depth of outrage but it’s the frequency that bothers me. I’ll listen through the occasional non-comedic rant but I won’t stay if it occurs all the time. Larry getting overly upset has its own way of being funny BUT only every now and then. Everything has been politicized the last couple of months. Things were good last week. I don’t think TRG has the wit TDS does to successfully follow the format. They need to find some other creative and funny way for the show to vent their political frustration. Douche-bag of the show is a good start. Bring a liberal in the studio and have him/her exchange paintball fire with Larry over trivia. Just keep it fun in the morning. Move to PM if you want to be serious.

Bring back some of the SSS bits. Where’s Captain Ponytail? Where’s the check written on the dildo? Where’s the trying to get the money back at GA 400 toll booth? Trying to get the 1/10th of a cent back for a gallon of gas from the dot head running the convenience store. Haven’t heard an in my stall in months. Where’s the squirt gun with yellow food coloring for in my stall? Quit repeating the same stuff and bring back some of the regular Guys 1.0 bits. How ’bout the Fake Arnold Fox News prank?

I don’t listen to their ramblings, I like music. Some station should try it in the AM.

I was excited when TRG came back… but the show is the same damn thing over and over and over. Same games, same bits all the time. Liked the show in the old days much better, seemed to be more edgy and out there, this version sounds too watered down, like Cumulus management has a leash on them to an extent. Way too much political talk, trying having more fun.

I agree. They need to change up some of the bits. i like most of them but they repeat them over and over. They have many great bots from the past and need to bring some of those back for variety.

Hey Rodney has their contract been renewed yet? It’s up for renewal in January I think?

I agree. They need to change up some of the bits. I like most of them but they repeat them over and over. You shouldn’t do the same bit more than say once per month. Instead, they are doing the same bits every week. They have many great bits from the past and need to bring some of those back for variety.

Hey Rodney has their contract been renewed yet? It’s up for renewal in January I think?

My answer to the question is a big YES. with each week that goes by it seems the show becomes more and more political. More and more political rants that are aimed at advancing issues and not enertainment. They need to tone it way back and refocus on comedy. forget the politics.

I doubt this question would be asked if TRG’s were praising the Chosen One.

I don’t think TRG is getting too political, I think it gets bad when Larry goes on his anti Obama rants for 10 minutes at a time. Bring back some of the fun, BS Steve is a good start, and limiting Larry’s rants during the news jog would also help.

The Regular Guys are absolutely too political. I love their brand of humor, but as soon as they start talking politics I have to change the channel (unfortunately I’m having to change the channel much more often these days). Their angry and reactionary political rants are annoying and often way off base. If I wanted to listen to teabagger crap I’d listen to 750.

Regular Guys rule. Couldn’t agree more with their politics. They need a stronger signal to pick up more OTP listeners. The midtown homos and Obama loving negroes are not going to tune in thus hurting their ratings. Why does V-103 win? B/c of the vast number of negroes in Atlanta. If you had a fire drill in Atlanta and looked down from the Space Shuttle you’d see a black spot on the earth over Atlanta.

“Dot-heads?”, “Homos?”, “Obmam-loving Negros?”

Of course, these comments come from fringe wackos that the GOP is embarrassed to have associated with the party. However, it is also indicative of the kind of mindset that TRG appeal to.

To those of you who made those hateful comments. The Regular Guys might love you, but your mothers would be ashamed of you.

Stopped listening b/c I got sick of hearing all the political whining. Isn’t that what AM radio is supposed to be for?? Focus on comedy and your listening audience will improve…

Too much politics – I listen to a.m. talk shows, but i don’t want to hear that when i’m heading to work. And i put their problems squarely on Larry’s shoulders. Most of his rants are too long, not funny, and not insightful – he jumps at every opportunity to inject his whiny complaints, and won’t give it a rest once he gets going. If the show is going to be a political show, let Eric handle it. He actually makes sense.

I’ve stopped listening. I’ll return when they get back to comedy.

We all seem to agree that Larry’s rant’s are getting boring during the news jog.. He interrupts too often and keeps yapping even though the other guys have stopped laughing.. ugh.. keep it short Lar!!!

I would like them to talk about GOOOH. It’s a solution to part of our problem and ranting doesn’t help and isn’t funny either.

I agree with most of their politics, but I still think they are way too political these days. Larry has gotten really annoying with the political rants – not funny and kind of bizarre at times.

Hopefully they will see the light and tone that down and start doing new bits (or ones from 1.0). I’m a long time fan but I can’t take much more.

Totally agree with what Ronnie said re more SSS bits.

They have to stop with the political stuff. I blame Larry entirely. Eric and SS are great, and Tim is hilarious. Larry is doing a poor job leading the show – need more humor! No question that Larry’s political rants are the reason people are changing stations. Hopefully they are reading these posts, b/c everyone is saying the same thing.

I think it’s great when they make fun of Rodney Ho. Larry rants a lot but that’s becaused he’s pissed off at all of the lib-tarded people…nothing wrong with that. I agree with the majority of what he says.

Morning DJs are never funny, they’re just barely a step above ‘paid spokespersons’ in the entertainment biz. As for the folks complaining about their politics, I wonder how many of them are tuning in to Stewart or Letterman every night as those shows turn into relentless liberal rants.

I lost interest about a year ago. Larry and his annoying rants are too much for me. The “edge” is gone. Too bad.. they were great back in the Late 90s/Early 00s.

I’m a former Atlanta morning show producer who now sits in the I-20 traffic every morning listening to the radio and I’d like to consider myself pretty neutral as to my thoughts on most of the shows on in Atlanta. I have def noticed over the last 4 months The Regulars Guys get much more political. I do agree with Larry that the depth they go into their rage has changed and that might effect the perception, but the ratings stand true to speak what the population hears as they listen to the show. Still like the show a lot, but I would certainly jump on the bandwagon to see them tone it back a little.

If Rodney catches this post, I’d love to see his personal feeling on this issue since they were not outwardly stated in the article. I know he listens to this show and Bert quite a bit, so his opinion is certainly valid.

Normal politics are ok but it sucks when Larry goes on 15 minute rants about tea parties. The show Is still funny though
