Lou Dobbs, a veteran CNN anchor whose anti-immigration stance in recent years angered many Latino groups, left the network today in a surprise announcement.
Dobbs, who has been at the network for much of its 29-year existence, alluded to the maelstrom that has been building against him in recent months for his outspoken advocacy against illegal immigration:
Over the past six months it’s become increasingly clear that strong winds of change have begun buffeting this country and affecting all of us, and some leaders in media, politics and business have been urging me to go beyond the role here at CNN and to engage in constructive problem solving as well as to contribute positively to the great understanding of the issues of our day. And to continue to do so in the most honest and direct language possible.
You can read his statement in full here.
Dobbs, according to the New York Times, wasn’t specific what his next step might be. His contract with CNN wasn’t actually up until 2011 but he said he and CNN bigwigs agreed to let him out of his contract early.
While this news may be a surprise to some, it’s clear CNN saw it coming because the network plans to announce a replacement Thursday morning, the Times said. A Fox spokesperson denied that he was in talks with Fox or Fox Business.
Dobbs, 54, was a straightforward anchor in the early years but in more recent times has taken on issues such as outsourcing, free trade deals and corporate handouts.
Latino groups have been trying to pressure CNN to get rid of Dobbs this year and leaders are citing victory.
Jerry Gonzalez, executive director of the Georgia Associaton of Latino Elected Officials (GALEO), said groups began actively lobbying CNN to drop Dobbs earlier this year after he spoke to The Federation For American Immigration Reform, which many believe is a hate group. “He’s been spreading hate and fear against Latinos for many years,” Gonzalez said. “I’m glad it’s going to end, at least on CNN. I think this sends a clear message the power and growth of Latinos and the immigrant community.”
He spoke about the issue just last month when CNN aired “Latinos in America,” a documentary about life as a Latino today. He liked what he had seen in that special but felt Dobbs’ presence on the network was an overarching negative for CNN.

I did not agree with Dobbs with illegal immigration, but I support some of his views on trade, outsourscing,NAFTA,corruption. It seems obvious that fox would want to go after him,why on the flailing Fox Business?
CNN should find another moderate independent like him to fill that slot, even though I am a liberal myself.

He will be on FOX News before Thanksgiving. I wouldn’t be surprised to see him filling in for Glenn Beck on Monday.

CNN increasingly looks like the multicultural network, with Anderson Cooper being the lone white male, and he’s…you know (wink wink). Guess Lou Dobbs’ shtick wasn’t fitting in.

So he’s a quitter like Sarah Palin.
Hey, now Lou can work full-time at looking for Obama’s Kenyan birth certificate.
But I would guess a gig at Fox News is what’s going to happen. He’ll fit right in with Glenn Beck and Rupert Murdoch, who both think Obama is a racist.

He was the only redeeming factor on CNN. I did watch Fox 23/7 allowing the 1 hour for Lou Dobbs. Looks like Fox 24/7 now.

FREEDOM OF SPEECH,ESPECIALLY WITH THE BACKING OF FACTS, MUST CONTINUE AND GROW IF WE ARE TO REMAIN FREE.
EVERYONE WHO OPPOSES SOMETHING IS NOT FULL OF HATE.MURDERERS ARE FULL OF HATE. POLITICIANS HATE THE TRUTH.TERRORISTS ARE FULL OF HATE.
SOMEBODY OUT THERE STUDY HISTORY FOR A CHANGE. EVER HEARD OF THE NAZIS, OR THE COMMUNISTS? THERE IS AN AFRICAN PROVEREB I FEAR IS TOO TRUE. CHOOSE YOUR ENEMIES WELL, FOR IN THE END THAT IS WHO YOU WILL BE MOST LIKE.HAVE WE AS A NATION LOST SITE OF OPINION THAT IS UNPOPULAR, IN THE NAME OF NOT OFFENDING SOMEONE? I AM TALKING RESPECTFUL DISAGREEMENT, NOT HATE PHRASES.

I used to watch Lou Dobbs a lot until he took that nasty, hateful stance on illegal immigration. My opinion of him changed a lot since the hateful side of him was exposed. He’ll be a perfect fit for Fox News.

GREAT COMMENT GT!!!
I’M SO GLAD YOU WROTE IN ALL CAPS. NOTHING SAYS I’M CRAZY AND STUPID MORE THAN WRITING IN ALL CAPS.
THE ONLY POINT I HAVE TO DISAGREE WITH IS WHEN YOU SAID THAT FREEDOM OF SPEECH IS EVEN BETTER WHEN BACKED WITH FACTS. HONESTLY, I PREFER SPEECH BACKED WITH NO FACTS, BUT INSTEAD ALOT OF EMOTIONAL APPEALS BY FORMER DRUG ADDICTS AND MILLIONAIRES WHO ALWAYS PUT A DOLLAR IN THEIR POCKET BEFORE THEY’D CARE ABOUT THE BETTERMENT OF THE COUNTRY.
p.s. TELL ME MORE ABOUT THOSE NAZIS AND COMMUNISTS.

Well there goes the only reason to watch CNN – Best of luck Lou! Make sure you turn the lights out when you leave because CNN is going down fast.

If Lou Dobbs does go to Fox as expected, it seems Fox would have him, Glen Beck, and Greta Van Susteren from CNN. Makes you wonder if CNN is more fair and balance than Fox with Hannity, Huckabee, and that crook Oliver North.

“Judge a tree by the fruit it bears”, and “those who refuse to learn history are damned to repeat it” Two things I think Lou himself would agree with. Fortunately I know I should be responsible for myself and my family. As I once was part of government, back when history was taught, I know the cycle socialism-communism-absolute rule. Sorry all the previous posters are so un-enlightened. It is really sad the road we are on but the path is to oppression…time will tell, then it will be too late
