After an incredible run of rising ratings, V-103 finally fell back a bit in October but its numbers would be the envy of any other station in town. Frank & Wanda still take home a whopping 18 percent of the 18-34, morning audience, down from 20.6 percent a month earlier.
There were a few stations that cheered the fall’s arrival.
B98.5 had its best numbers all year, with a 5.9 percent share among all listeners, a solid fourth place. And Christmas hasn’t even started yet!

Country radio fans keep on flocking to both Kicks 101.5 and 94.9/The Bull. Kicks had its best numbers of the year, tied for fifth among 25-54 and sixth among 18-34 year olds. Its numbers have risen an incredible six months in a row.
The Bull has also seen its ratings rise consistently and is now tied for eighth among 25-54 and seventh among 18-34 year olds. Its Jason Pullman and Kristen Gates morning show actually beat Cadillac Jack and Dallas McCade among 18 to 34 year olds for the first time.
The final month with Freddy Brooks on the morning show was a good on. For the first time this year, the morning show with Freddy and Spiff Carner match True Oldies’ all-day numbers. (Randy Spiff started October 12, reuniting with Spiff.) The station is ranked 17th among 25-54 year olds and 9th overall.
Kiss 104.1 had its poorest 25-54 performance this year. Ditto with its morning host Tom Joyner but he’s still a solid No. 2 in town. Majic 107.5 had a weak summer but bounced back a bit in October, with Steve Harvey pulling in his second best 18-34 numbers this year.
Hot had its lowest 18-34 numbers since January. Star’s 18-34 numbers were its worst this year.
Jimmy Baron’s first full month on Dave FM was inconclusive, with his 25-54 numbers holding from September and his 18-34 numbers up a smidge.
Project 9-6-1 had its weakest overall numbers this year. The first month of the morning show without Giant Brian saw a drop among 25-54 year olds but a jump with 18-34 year olds.
Groove 105.7 launched after these monthly measurements ended. The final Viva 105.7 numbers were comparable to previous months, ranked 14th among 18-34 year olds.
The Regular Guys had a second relatively poor month in a row among 18 to 34 year olds, drawing half the audience it did back in the spring and ranking 12th. Its 25-54 audience, though, has grown and now matches its younger demo. It’s tied for ninth among 25-54 year olds.
99X on 97.9 saw its morning numbers drop off big time after a strong stretch of months. Its 18-34 morning numbers were less than half what they were two months ago, tied for 23rd after hitting the top 10 in August. The station just plays music in the mornings.
Maybe they all went to Georgia State’s WRAS-FM, which hit the top 10 for the first time among 18 to 34 year olds. (It ranked 19th in that demo in September and 11th in August.)
Although Arbitron defines this as October ratings, it actually covers the second half of September and the first two weeks of October. (Specifically Sept. 17 to October 14.)

What is puzzling is how Randy and Spiff are attributed for a rise in the morning numbers at True Oldies when Randy started October 12th. The ratings ended on October 14th, so for those two days to make that big an impact would be a miracle. Shouldn’t the credit go to Fred and Spiff??

Dave-you’re right. I thought Randy had started earlier in the month. I’ll fix that.

TRG is not as funny as it used to be. It’s more political than ever. The show has left me feeling angry more days than entertained.

as someone who likes classic soul – i’ve never heard kiss 104.1 sound more stale. do they have to play the same old tired boring 15 songs over and over. i mean, c’mon, classic soul has thousands and thousands of good songs from the 70s, 80s and 90s! and magic 107.5 is just as awful if you ask me. i also like the bull – they’re really sounding fresh these days and not afraid to go deep with the playlist.

Congrats 790 the Zone! 24th out of 25. Cha Cha Shapiro, the Two Live Stewpids, and the world’s most boring man–Mike Bell. Quite an All-star line-up they have there.

Does anyone else besides me think there are two true oldies stations? One is the syndicated part with Scott Shannon (good). The other is Randy & Spiff, etc. (not so good). The morning and afternoon drive time shows should expand the playlist. If I hear Blood, Sweat & Tears one more time, I’m going to scream. Note to true oldies program director: Listen to Serrus/XM’s fifties on five and sisties on six. Take notes. Use songs. Be creative.

Yeah, TRG has really started to lose me. I’m getting tired of all the Southside Steve whining and preening. It’s just not funny anymore. I’ve actually started listening to the frikkin’ Bert Show! And when that gets TOO girly or when Melissa just won’t shut the hell up, I plug in the iPod. Atlanta radio is pretty pathetic.

I guess the ratings show that The Regular Guys right-wing slant is turning off listeners, this one included. Thank goodness for the return off 99X….music in the morning and none of the crap i hear on the Hannity wanna-be’s at 100.5.

Here’s the deal, it’s not about size it’s about quality. Ok, sometimes it’s about size, but with a station like The Zone with that 25-34, 25-44 male demo and like most sports talk stations, a high listener loyalty, that’s what really matters to an advertiser – which is any station’s main concern. If you’re an advertiser with male oriented products and you can get a lot of frequency on a station that reaches mostly males who listen a lot, then it’s a no brainer, regardless of their rank because even if the overall reach (number of ears) is less, you’re reaching into those ears they do have much more and that my friends is what radio is all about. $$$
