ABC has a hit on its hands with its new sci-fi drama “V,” which pulled in a surprisingly robust 14.3 million viewers Tuesday night. Among total viewers, that’s the second biggest debut of the fall behind “NCIS: Los Angeles.” And among 18-49 year olds, it was the top new show of the season; plus, it beat “NCIS.”
After an action-packed pilot, can the show hold most of those viewers?
And locally, the Falcons continue to be a hot ticket, hauling in about 1 million gridiron fans this past Monday night in its loss to the Saints.
Among last week’s top primetime shows, “Desperate Housewives” took the top slot in Atlanta with 399,000 viewers, though its 14.1 million viewers nationally only ranked 12th. Three of the four World Series games were tops nationally and also made the top 10 locally.
The BET Hip Hop Awards, taped at the Atlanta Civic Center, drew nearly 4 million viewers October 27, the best in the show’s four-year history. It was also a big draw in Atlanta, bringing in 258,000 viewers. Atlanta-based “Monica,” which debuted after the awards show, held about 2/3 of the audience, with 2.7 million viewers. This was the network’s second-biggest debut behind “Tiny & Toya.” It drew 204,000 locally.
Bravo’s “The Real Housewives of Atlanta” October 29 brought in typical numbers of 2.8 million viewers, the season average, for part one of the reunion show, taped at the Midtown club Opera. The show itself was a bit more staid than last year’s, thanks partly to the death of Kandi’s ex fiance just two weeks before the taping.
Bravo’s “Top Chef,” which is down to six chefs (two from Atlanta), brought in a season high of 3 million viewers but remains behind Lifetime’s “Project Runway,” which brought in 3.2 million. (This week featured a time-wasting “All Stars dinner” and no regular episode.)
The CW’s “The Vampire Diaries,” shot in metro Atlanta, sucked in its second best viewership numbers (short of its debut), with 4.2 million viewers. The Kevin Williamson-penned show featured the surprise death of a major character, Vicki, who was turning into a vampire.
“The Next Iron Chef 2,” which is hosted by local food scientist Alton Brown, enticed 2.7 million viewers Sunday, a definite hit for the Food Network.
Comedy Central’s “The Jeff Dunham Show” opened huge two weeks ago, with 5.3 million viewers but apparently, most viewers were not that into the puppet thing because this past Thursday, the show lost more than half its audience. It drew just 2.3 million in its second round. Ouch!
And “The League” on FX, a comedy about fantasy football, held about three quarters of the “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” crowd of 1.3 million. The show opened at a tepid 994,000 agasint the World Series last Thursday.
BET’s “The Mo’Nique Show” seems to have found its base in its third and fourth weeks, usually ranging from 500,000 or so on Friday nights to more than one million viewers on Tuesday nights.

I will be curious to see if ABC can sustain those numbers for ‘V’. It’s not a bad show, but it’s not a very compelling one, either. What “re-imagining” did for ‘Battlestar Galactica’ is not present with ‘V’. I think many of those ratings points represent people who tuned in out of nostalgia and curiosity.
