Kevin Williamson told mtv.com why he chose to kill off a major character on “The Vampire Diaries’ during the seventh episode, a bit of a shocker for early fans.

“I don’t want to be that show where there’s no jeopardy,” explained Kevin Williamson in a recent chat with MTV, giving us the scoop on Vicki’s shocking death. “[Some shows] are all very predictable in the sense that, well, ‘We know this is the lead character so we know he won’t die.’ Or, ‘That’s a regular, so he won’t die, it’ll be a supporting person.”

“The Vampire Diaries,” which is shot in and around Atlanta, has taken on a philosophy followed by some other popular shows such as “Grey’s Anatomy” (which killled off T.R. Knight’s George last season) and “Lost” (which has knocked off several big characters, such as Ian Somerholder’s Boone.).

Actress Kayla Ewell’s bad-girl character Vicki (top left) got bitten by the mischievous vampire Damon (Somerholder, who as I just noted was killed off on… “Lost”). In her final episode last Thursday, she had turned into a vampire herself and was having a tough time controlling her urge for human blood. When she attacked another main character Elena (Nina Dobrev), “good” vampire Stefan (Paul Wesley) saves Elena by throwing a stake through Vicki’s heart.

“Vampire Diaries” has taken off on the CW. It was not only the CW’s biggest debut ever but is now more popular than “America’s Next Top Model” or any other CW show. The Halloween episode last Thursday drew 4.2 million, the most since the opening frame in September. Plus, the show typically brings in another million or so viewers via DVR.

Williamson is best known for the WB’s “Dawson’s Creek” and the “Scream” movie series.
