What did you think of the BET Hip-Hop Awards 2009?

Taped mostly at the Atlanta Civic Center three weeks ago, the BET Hip Hop Awards was more about concert performances than awards. And plenty of dry ice.

Jay-Z, Young Jeezy, Snoop Dogg, Ludacris, Soulja Boy and Gucci Mane were among those who hit the stage. Ice Cube and Missy Elliott got lifetime achievement awards. Eminem popped up in a taped rap-off. Mike Epps hosted. He joked about Kanye West, who didn’t show up.

What did you think now that you’ve seen it?

Good post truthfighter! Bring back some real talent like you mentioned! And great idea about glorifying young scholars. Lets add our troops and firefighters and special forces in there as well. As a parent I would not want my child watching any of the nonsense on ANY of these music channels. It really does deplete brain cells.

@Truthfighter – although I commend you for what you have written – the forum that you have chosen is inappropriate – you will only incite those that have a negative view against our race – NO MATTER what we do…

What’s up with the performers wearing those jeans that are about to slide down. You know what it reminds me of? Children in diapers that have soiled them and then walk with their legs apart. These guys don’t realize how stupid it makes them look.

Having watched 5 minutes of the awards show, I can do no better than to quote Master Yoda; “And that is why you fail.”

@Truthfinder…RIGHT ON BROTHER! I would love to see an award show that awarded kids who excel in school or for doing positive work in thier community. I miss the old hip hop with folks like Public Enemy who actually had something positive to say on the mic.

ATL can’t handle the truth, sad… Everyone knows what happened within hip-hop when NY had it, then LA had the crown and NY had it again = The BEST music my ears have ever heard. NOW?! ATL has the crown and the game has gone SO Quickly from sugar to shyt. How can you justify Putting Gucci up there ALL Nite? Did we ever do that for BIG or PAC or even Jay / Nas / Snoop??? Basically someone who is musically gifted no matter where they reside. That Dude is trash on ANY city street. ATLANTA needs to do less promoting of JUST their own SO Hard that they forget who else is hot out there. BET is supposed to promote the entire art form and culture, the continual struggle for power and control of that art form, and of course the success of where HIP-HOP came from. BET = epic fail… what they served up was tired “funky .. old batch of collard greens” -Outkast.

I think the BET Awards needs to come to Houston next year! Lil Keke, Z-Ro, Trea, and Bun B could open the show! That would be the best Award show ever! THINK ABOUT IT BET!

FIRST, I am a proud black man from the OLD school..child of the sixties, teenager in the 70s. adult in the 80s the last decade of music I can stand(that being House Music) when 1990 rolled around it was all over. I dont watch the White Show called Oscars, nor Emmys nor Grammys nor Country Music Awards..all White Shows. I do not watch Hip Hop and hated the Source Hip Hop awards..complete trash. what looks like a bunch of apes with gaudy tacky huge chains(didnt we come over in chains? I should think the last think a black person would want to wear is a chain around the neck I dont give a kiddy if its gold platnium or bronze. its a Chain! The last time I watched the source awards(which they did away with thank god) I believe it was their first. I was so embarrassed by 15 people on stage to accept One award for some fool who cant articulate a sentence. bring his 3 kids to hold the award and all his croonies and hangers ons. I turned it off after the first award was given. I dont watch anything with the words hip hop or country or heavy metal attached to it. I dislike hip hop as much as I cant stand heavy metal or country. so I dont discriminate. A bunch of fools bouncing around on stage is just as bad as a bunch of red necks I refuse to waste my electricty on either. Would rather look at a Sci Fi movie, a vampire or werewolf movie or some teen white kids going camping and getting chased and butchered by some manaic welding a knife.(why do white kids go camping in the woods only to get killed by some loony?) TV award shows are highly overrated. I didnot see the MTV video awards when that goon kanye whom I never liked and dont seem to get his music. But I am sure I would have been appalled by his behavior which I was once I saw what he did to Taylor Swift. whom I never heard of, I dont follow country. I miss the 60s where folks didnt take off their clothes and could really sing and perform. all in a suit and tie. and a long gown. today.the women are naked. the men love to show their underwear in public and their Bird chest(if your going to show your chest atleast WORK OUT at the gym(as I do) that way you wont look so foolish. and sagging jeans underwear showing is just disgusting. Nope. they can keep the Hip awards, country awards oscars, and emmys. all of the suck.

Truthfighter 2:30 pm: Amen brotha…… even tho im white, your a cool cat. See white people like me respect blacks that can spell, dress, and take care of their kids. Im a 5 time survivor of violent crime while working the streets of Atlanta in the late 90’s early 2000’s before they tore down Grady homes, Jonesboro North/South… etc…. yes, EVERY time it was black males that i had to outsmart to save my azzz… but u know what? I don’t hate ALL blacks…just thugs and those that bring down society by poisoning the minds of our youth. And for the record… i hate Marlin Manson 2… that ckc sucking fgot is a disgrace to the white race!!
But you better believe everytime i hear about some scumbag rapist, or carjacker getting killed by the cops… i celebrate. And i see nothing wrong with thinking like that!
We should bring back public executions… that would make people think twice about their actions. I also believe in the forced castration of any prisoner convicted of a sex or violent crime. I bet that would cut down on the amount of fatherless kids in the black community.

I am a old head.. i grew up in the late 70,s 80’s and 90’s when hip hop was real. The crap on the radio and on BET is fake. The orgins of Hip Hop has it roots in real music and expression. The birth of hip hop was about those same ideal.. true creativity and expression. No one was wearing there pants off there azz. No one was pizzy drunk on stage. Everyone respected women. Remembery “Self Destruction by KRS-1″. Remember ” The stop the violence movement. “. Those days are gone and replaced with lollie pop. What a disgrace!!!!

I thought the show was horrible. The best parts of the show was the freestyle segments, snoops hair, and Fabulous thank you speech. Other than that it was garbage. Come on BET step it up.

Truthfighter @ 2:30 – Keep it real, son. You are absolutely right.

As a black male who is a child of the 70s, I remember the first time I heard the Sugar Hill Gang. I remember where I was when I first heard Boogie Down Productions. I remember when hip hop was happy (De La Soul), pensive (Tupac), goofy (Kwame, Leaders of New School), fun (Kid n Play, Slick Rick, Heavy D), defiant (PE, X-Clan), boastful (MC Lyte, Special Ed, LL), educational (BDP), jazzy (Digable Planets) and inspiring (Nas). Sadly, it is now none of those things and I truly miss it.

I`m an O.G. Rap fan. But that show was garbage. It was cheap and no real creativity. How many times have I saw cars on stage. I don`t think I ever saw a show where the same performer performs 3 damn times. Last disappointment, which is a real DISS, there were absolutely no female performers besides the female dancers. And on the flip side there were no male dancers. Garbage.

I have lived in ATL for 10 years now. I am from down south and i seen some pretty good artist from the A town..Last night proved why Alanta rappers are the wackest ever…People down here be complaining because other people say Atlanta music sucks…Well, the proof is in the pudding…I like Luda, Outkast, Killa Mike…But letting Gucci perform all those times was a mistake because regardless of what people say Atlanta rappers spit like they are hooked on phonics..When you rap U are suppose to use words and these fools sound like my nephew in the 3rd grade..SHAME on the BET awards for producing this mess..

It was way better than the BET Awards, that’s for sure.

Mike Epp did a great job, and overall I liked it. But you know the Internet community and the racist/anti hip hop people though. So I’ll leave it at that. I just wonder how many ignorant comment are going to be seen on CMT or MTV Award boards over this award show?

The BET Music Awards was a flop at its best, did anyone see Plies loose his Goon medallion when he came out to perform Wasted with Gucci Mane. I find it totally abserd that these retards have the right to represent Hip-Hop as a community point blank. Whom ever orchestrated this viewing gets an F- due to the line up and performance choice/Jay Z always brings the flames no matter what occassion. Skinny jeans look totally inappropriate for youngmen and grownmen needless to say pants of this statue make you look soft and frail/ find a new swag asap rappers. Not to mention the dances that look sweet and sugery/ has Hip-Hop become a hub station for sweetness and feminality for young boys and men. Go back to the roots and study greatnees before demonstrating ignorance, by the way Blacks own Hip-Hop and R&B lets get it right next year BET.

I’ve always wanted to ask Debra Lee how she sleeps at night. I’ve come close before so I’m sure the time will come.

These (ah-heemmm) “artists” are put out as our best to the world but are FAR from it. Meanwhile, you have veterans like Joi scrambling for gigs. The downward spiral started when LaFace closed up shop and LA (Reid) moved on to Arista and totally treated the acts that made him like crap.

It comes with the territory of being placed on the map. As a result, you get every talent less fool shooting down here on the first thing smoking and the only talen they have if BSing and so they BS their way into a “career”. Why we allow it, I don’t know. I get at least 5 flyers sent to me a week for celebrity birthday bashes for people I’ve never heard of. They certainly have the marketing down, but forgot to offer something other than hype as the product.

I actually feel sorry for the younger ones because there’s usually a parent or guardian behind it pushing and pimping them. One act on Universal a few years ago, kid act of brothers, were living in their car. 5 kids plus the parents with a single out. I have a feeling the parents smoked up the advance $ from the label. Where will these kids be as adults if they’ve been taught that all they’re good for is to be on stage… education takes a back seat (if even still in the car)… and OMG if they don’t have any talent to begin with… Scary!

As for events that should be supported and televised – An Evening of Respect is next week, but it’s hardly being talked about. http://www.otisredding.com

Didn’t watch the show, but that’s not why I am leaving this comment

The reason I felt the need to comment is all of this blatant racism on this topic. I’m disgusted with this hatred. A lot of people are saying BET itself is a racist network. To that I say flip through every channel you have and tell me and yourself who you think their target audience is. If you’re being honest, it will be white. BET is targeted towards the black audience. Take that away and all there is is espn (sometimes), what used to be UPN (sometimes) and that’s it.

Basically there is no need for a W.E.T. Damn near every channel is catered to white people. You can’t argue that.
