What did you think of the BET Hip-Hop Awards 2009?
Taped mostly at the Atlanta Civic Center three weeks ago, the BET Hip Hop Awards was more about concert performances than awards. And plenty of dry ice.
Jay-Z, Young Jeezy, Snoop Dogg, Ludacris, Soulja Boy and Gucci Mane were among those who hit the stage. Ice Cube and Missy Elliott got lifetime achievement awards. Eminem popped up in a taped rap-off. Mike Epps hosted. He joked about Kanye West, who didn’t show up.

@ The Standard….you are 100% right. Remember BET back in the days??? Ahhhh…good times..good times. Also @ For Real…you are also right on the money. Back in the day a wack MC would be put on full blast and would never be allowed to get away with the crap that these Mickey Mouse Cat in the Hat ass rappers are pushing as “hip hop”. Why did Biggie and Pac have to leave us?!?

I THOUGHT THE AWARD SHOW WAS LAME. I EXPECTED MORE OF THE NIGHT BUT I WAS DISSAPOINTED. MY FAVORITE & ONLY PART OF THE NITE I LIKED IS WHEN ICE CUBE & MISSY WERE HONERED,DESPITE THE SHOW BEING LAME MIKE EPPS WAS A GREAT HOST.

I agree that there were way more performances than awards, but it was nice that everyone in the Hip Hop world was getting along. It was also nice to see the talent from the ATL (Monica, the Dream, Goodie Mob, etc.). The freestyle rap sessions were amazing! The jokes about Lil Mama and Kanye were hilarious too!

The Hip Hop Awards were pretty nice. Mike Epps is the funniest man ever. he should host every show from here on out, and whoever doesn’t think that Mike Epps is funny is just as lame as they claim he is….

I thought the show was AWFUL! It looked low budget! No one looks like polished. It was AWFUL! Shame on BET for airing something like that! I am a big hip hop fan…but that show there…..OMG!

Sorry I missed this to see what it’s about. I’m certainly not a hiphop fan, or R&B for that matter. I have heard some “rap” music and agree with Bill Cosby when he tried to get through to the “gangstas”, moving their thoughts toward a more positive message. If we live in a ‘negative’ world, we will all get a ‘negative’ result. I’ve tried rap and hiphop, it’s just not my thing.

FunnyFunny…you are dead on with your comments – HBCU’s have withstood the time and I believe they are an important part of American history – they were created during segregation and they have become more culturally diverse throughout the years. I attended Alabama A&M University in the late 90s and to my knowledge was the only Caucasian female going to school as an undergrad at that time. I went there because the school was more affordable than other neighboring colleges and I gained a lifetime of friends, experiences and an in-depth history lesson. Throughout the years, the school has become more diverse and I suspect it will continue to be moving forward. I do not support BET or Black Miss USA – but HBCU’s I do support – they strive for the higher education of all people!!

I missed the awards. Besides, hip-hop was better in the 80’s and 90’s. There are very few lyricists getting publicity now. Such a shame.
Re: Mary Norwood, fortunately I don’t live in Atlanta. However, I am an employee so I look forward to employees and their families out on the streets. Don’t worry citizens, privatization is coming. Look forward to paying twice. Once for the contractors and once again for the city workers to fix what the contractors f*cked up(remember United Water).

Overall I thought the show was ok. The sound was horrible and I wasn’t pleased with all the performances because alot of them were rapping over their songs. I was very pleased with the more seasoned rappers, like Snoop and Jay Z because they were actually rapping. Also, I felt that BET could haven chosen a better location than the Civic Center, maybe the GA Dome or something bigger than where they chose because after all it is a hip hop awards show.

Last year was better. It was boring this year i mean gucci ran the show. Mike Epps did his thang though. But i mean im dissapointed. There wasnt anything exciting about the show this year. I would have loved to see kanye perform, em, wayne, drake, jayz a lil more, E40, and much more. Hope is better next year.

It just continues the stereotype that Atlanta is nothing but a gangsta, thug city where everyone wears gold grills and wears their pants down around their knees. Can anyone explain to me what talent it takes to jump around on a stage, grabbing your crotch, and yelling? I’m only 27, but for the life of me, I don’t see any talent in rapping. Sure, you have to memorize words, but you don’t have to have any vocal talent. There are so many talented people out there who never get any recognition, and then you have these thugs who just stand there and scream, and people call it talent. Baffling.

The cypher segments were the hottest and best part of the show–Watching the GoodieMob perform made me long for the old school Dirty South Music from Roll it up my N$gga to Raheem the Dream to Southren Playa listic– Atlanta will always have its own sound and its up to the rest of the country to love it or leave it — Atl has always accepted West Coast –Texas–Miami Bass–even Pacific NW(Sir Mix a lot) and made room for the arrogant, brash, but you got to admit where it all started East Coast rappers — So pls. stop being so critical!!!

I enjoyed Mike Epps, Kid N Play, Eminem, KRS-One, Ice Cube and Snoop Dog….it was somewhat better than the previous years. I’m not the biggest fan of Hip Hop/Rap, but my top ATL rapper favorites are: T.I., OutCast, and Ludacris!

Molly – Are you serious? do you think you could put words together like Jay Z or Lil Wayne or Luda?–The Metaphors and double entendres — these ARTISTS do this without writing these lyrics down — one must be very, very, talented to do this. I don’t think some of the greatest poets i.e. browning, frost, etc. could do that!!(not with a live band backing them)

I loved the cypher segments. It took me back to the earlier days of rap/hip hop! I am glad Ice Cube and Missy Elliott were honored. I enjoyed Good Mob’s performance. BET has not been the same for a long time, but maybe they will improve one day.

The show was garbage…period! As stated before, there were too many performances and too little awards given. I don’t listen to these wanna be rappers these days as I’m an old head – grew up listening to rap from the 80’s and 90’s. NYC need to bring it back – this corny-azz down south crap is for the birds.
This noise that is on the radio now is garbage. I hope these imposters save their money – their careers won’t last that much longer.

People, please understand ONE THING! What you saw on that awards show and have seen for the last several years was NOT hip hop. It is what now passes as hip hop after being dumbed down to the lowest common denominator for mass consumption. Those of us who grew up with REAL hip hop in the 80s and 90s (before the thuggery when talented MCs spoke poetically about a whole range of issues) know the difference. As a proud young black man I am sad to say that the BET Hip Hop Awards and other similar shows like it are one of the primary reasons why we as a community can not progress. We glorify the WRONG things. Now while I did not watch the show this year because I chose not too, I have watched in the past and all you see is label whoring, BIG jewelery, and cars. The glorification of these things has taken a toll on our community long enough yet we still run to turn the tv on when this nonsense airs, yet we get angry when the white people on these blogs come on here and degrade us. Mind you I’ll always stand up and defend the upstanding citizens of our community but its displays of ignorance like the “BET awards” that give these people thier ammunition. Instead of glorifying a RAP awards show lets glorify an awards ceremony for young scholars excepting scholarships to school, or something similar. Who cares about Louis V, and Gucci, and “making it rain” when we have children dying in the street EVERY day all across this country at the hands of other children, and most of the time both the victim and the assailant are BLACK! We’ve got to wake up and realize there is a war going on out here and its our own backyard!

More and More I am starting to see that “thug” is synonymous with the “n” word – It is just a way for someone to call a person the “n ” word without being accused of doing it… I also see that those with the negative thoughts towards the african american race (even those claiming to be black) – that some of you are one in the same person just posting under different names….
Although I am not a real fan of hip hop-the talent that they possess to take their poetry and put it to music is amazing. They are not talentless – hence the millions that they make. Hip Hop has crossed the cultural lines – it isn’t a “black” thing and more and more of our white counter parts embrace the music daily. I spoke with someone who attended the awards show and he said it was much better live than televised
to the person who says there was violence and referenced AJ. AJ’s incident was not connected to the BET Hip Hop awards – it just so happened to have occured during that weekend. Try again.
