What did you think of the BET Hip-Hop Awards 2009?

Taped mostly at the Atlanta Civic Center three weeks ago, the BET Hip Hop Awards was more about concert performances than awards. And plenty of dry ice.

Jay-Z, Young Jeezy, Snoop Dogg, Ludacris, Soulja Boy and Gucci Mane were among those who hit the stage. Ice Cube and Missy Elliott got lifetime achievement awards. Eminem popped up in a taped rap-off. Mike Epps hosted. He joked about Kanye West, who didn’t show up.

What did you think now that you’ve seen it?

I thought the great pumpkin does show up at the end and all the kids finally see him? Was there a sequel made at some point or something?

It was boring. Maybe next year they can hold it in New York or LA so they can get some more big name people to perform other than the dream and gucci mane

It was alright but I do agree it was more performing than awards being handed out. @ Wonder…. It’s not where you are from it’s where you at… big name people were there. Having it in NY won’t make it any better… ya’ll just like to hate on the DIRTY DIRTY!!!

I am somewhat surprised there have been on news reports (yet) of anyone being shot.

21st Century Hip-Hop isn’t as good as ’90s Hip-Hop, IMHO.

It was VERY BORING and as much as he tries Mike Epps really isn’t that funny he is more CORNY. I was flip flopping between that and the Biggest Loser and in the end the Biggest Loser won. I could only take about a hour of the BET Awards. It’s something about the award shows now that aren’t as exciting as they were back in the 90’s. I remember rushing home not wanting to miss any of it now its like maybe I would TiVo it and look at it later….lol….

Rodney, Do you mean the Gucci Mane Awards? He popped up on darn near every performance!! Overall, it was Blah. Mike Epps was funny and I’m glad Jay-Z performed.

Overall it was boring but there were a few good performances…the funny thing is I’m from NY living here for 5 years now & thought it was funny that I loved certain performances like “Cream on the inside…” Because I live here and via facebook all my friends in NYC were like “Ok, who tha f*uk, what tha f@uk was that?” Best of the night was the cypher with Mos Def, Black Thought & EM…I LOVED it! THAT is what hip-hop is about (BTW, when a group of MC’s gather around in a group & spit rhymes its called a ‘cypher’ not a rap-off. Took me back to the days in Queens to ‘park jams’ where MC’s did that ALL the time…”Hip-hop it started out in the park, we used to do it out in the dark” (what y’all know about Mc Shan?)

That was some garbage!!! BET is much to big to half do anything and plus it’s a representation of us! and why were there no female artists on the show?

None of them know how to entertain anymore except Snoop and Jay-Z. The cipher is always the best thing and Joe Budden kicked it like it should be done. BET Hip hop awards is like the ghetto version of the BET awards which is even more ghetto. Can we get a sound check at some point before the show.

@ wonder– how many relevent artists does L.A. have these days? 2 maybe? In regards to NY, they have more artists that are hot right now, but even THEY aren’t more relevent than what Atlanta has had going. Quit talking down on the “A”. Besides, you act like those that aren’t FROM here don’t like to travel here for stuff like this!

The BET Awards was good over all. But Why was Gucci man on the stage everytime you look around. Why was Tiny reading with her finger that’s something you do in 1st grade. I think Goodie Mob was awesome.

Coming from someone who’s worked on the BET team for this event and a native Atlantan – - – TAKE THIS CRAP OUT OF OUR CITY! We are so much better and deserving of much more! Something with at least a little class, which certainly won’t come from BET… but how about the Grammys? AMAs? This, RHOA and the like sends the wrong impression of Atlanta to the world and draws the classless dirt here that actually finds this appealing.

snoop is getting to be a tad too old. not “old” but he was definitly older than the cats he was performing with. he was also a bit slower and more mellow. not that there’s anything wrong with getting older (it’s actually a blessing), but its clear that he’s not one of the young cats anymore.

For real, for real?!?!?

Have to agree with Tater – Hip-Hop was more of an artform back in the late 80’s and 90’s and you had to have real talent or your wack a$$ would’ve been put on blast…Nowadays, it’s just a bunch of hard heads yellin’ into a mic…hip hop has definitely lost its way…RIP Tupac & Biggie

When are the awards for only white people? Oh that’s right, we don’t have those. Don’t mention the Emmy’s or Academy awards, the thugs are on there plenty. Look at those names! Jay-Z, Young Jeezy, Snoop Dogg, Ludacris, Soulja Boy, Gucci Mane, Ice Cube? WOW. Makes them look really good. I wonder which one will be killed first in a gang fight?

Why do blacks want everything to be “equal” yet have BET, black award shows, black colleges, black miss america (even though there are blacks in the normal one), etc? That does not sound pretty equal.

@ Kevin I agree….and I am a BLACK WOMAN. I am ashamed, appalled and down right disgusted at this attempt to present an award show when all they did was bounce around the stage. The didn’t perform anything worth listening to and I’m quite embarrased. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a lover of a lot of music, but I cut my teeth on R&B and HipHop!! I don’t know what they called it last night, but I’m beginning to agree with my Mother…what was all that dayum racket???

should be called the GED awards, that network has really let their standards go..I don’t partake an any crap like this especially when it belittles that African American community even more..they also need to step it up again and do more classy stuff like Tv One does.

So Darius/Hootie is country now?! That’s news. 20 years in the biz with the big hitters and I’m not even in my mid-thirties – pretty good for a moron. Rather be a moron than a bitter cracker who can’t handle that we have a black president or are soon to be the minority in this country as they already are in the world — and I am white, btw. lol I love ppl like Assley, y’all! I miss hip hop the way it was back in the 80’s and 90’s. I didnt see the awards but I figured I would hear about it in the news when the reported on whatever fight broke out or bad behavior displayed by the artists. The Great Pumpkin was on..how could anyone miss that??

@ Kevin – I hear ya, but do some homework – BET is owned by VIACOM. It’s not Black owned. They’re puppets putting out buffoonery that sells. It’s such an embarrassment that gets copied by kids since it’s put out there as something to emulate since such a spotlight is put on this crap.

LMAO @ GED Awards!!! I’m stealing that one!

@ Kevin, I don’t agree with your statement about them killig each other off, but everyone is entitled to their opinion. Death by any circumstance affects more that just the person you are wishing it upon!!

@ Ashley, let’s not resort to name calling and wishing death upon another’s life. If they were thugs and you don’t like the, then how do you know so many names and what they do or don’t do or that they were even on the show? You have a right to your opinion, however, there are thugs in the ‘white’ community as well. I don’t need to name names, you know who they are, but let’s get back on topic and not attack someone’s character because of what how they choose to make money. THE SHOW SUCKED…the lay out, content, performances and lack of actual awards…YES THE SHOW SUCKED.

@ all who want to continue to bring up race as I have mentioned as well, White people, namely teens up to the late 20’s are the biggest purchasers of this (c)rap music, whether online or in the stores. so is the problem that you can no longer hide from it or that you are actually liking it, but can’t let others know you might enjoy some of it??

Ashley….seriosuly?!?!? Get over yourself!

Kevin…institutions and organizations like HBCU (historically black colleges and universities) were established at a time when we were not able to particapte, be educated, co-mingle, etc. with whites and it just so happens that they have withstood the tests of time. I’m not a proponet of BET, i think as a televsion station (black or whatever) its horrible. But I do believe that HBCU’s are still important, because without them many of our young black sisters and brothers would not receive a higher education….and if you take a look at it, HBCU’s are becoming more culturally diverse anyway….

…looking at the comments made by you and Ashley…we all still have such a long way to go…

…any who…didn’t watch the awards…may catch the rerun…eeehh..maybe not!

Blessed!
