Project Runway: Global charming

Good evening! And once again, we are short a designer on “Project Runway.” This week it’s Nicolas.

I have said already that I am puzzled by this season’s judging. One “PR” fan has pointed out that this close to the end, maybe your history doesn’t matter so much; maybe you’re living week to week.

I respectfully disagree. I think that as the model Katie said during “Models of the Runway” (which I’m now watching, and sort of enjoying, although it doesn’t add much to the actual “PR experience), if Christopher’s been on the bottom three consecutive times, then maybe you’re overdue to go home. Hit the road, jack!

What was it with ski-style pants this week? Logan, Nicolas and Irina all had them, and only Irina had a ski-related challenge.

On to the challenge: a design inspired by Michael Kors’ favorite locales.

Nicolas (Greece): Super-slim pants and a bandage-style top. Judges auf’d him.

Irina (Aspen): Super-slim pants, cowl-neck sweater with peekaboo back, and faux-fur vest. She won, although I thought the vest looked sloppy and the sweater looked … beige. One viewer told me they loved the outfit, though.

Gordana (Park Avenue/New York): Gray curve-hugging dress with satin piping and a removable jeweled collar. I thought would have awarded her the win strictly on the removable collar … because versatility is sorely lacking in this season’s designs. (Remember early Michael Knight and his surprising little designs?)

Logan (Hollywood): Boring three-piece jeans design that I would have auf’d, had I been in charge. It looked better from the back, but that’s all I can say about it.

Carol Hannah (Palm Beach): Calling Uli … Uli Herzner, are you listening? CH used Palm Beach as inspiration to create an Uli-style flowing maxi dress. And Uli always invoked Miami as her inspiration. Ironic, but the dress was beautiful.

Althea (St Tropez): I wasn’t surprised when she produced yet another short-shorts outfit, but this one wasn’t as bad as some of her past designs (IMO, anyway).

Christopher (Santa Fe): A thrown-together flounce of bat-wing top and gathered mini-skirt.

Finale watch: It’s less than a month away, airing (if past seasons are any indication) Nov. 12 and 19. I assume the fearsome foursome will be Irina, Althea, Carol Hannah and Gordana. Anybody want to take a chance on Logan or Christopher?

Irina is going to the win season which bites because her stuff looks like crap. The judges have early on favored her. She is an opionated queen B%$#@ and I am not sure whom she is dressing but it nothing anyone I know likes.

I don’t know what happened to Christopher – he started out great and really fizzled these last weeks. I agree – he should have been out; but, I have never liked Nicolas either; and outside of his “ice-queen” outfit – he has not produced anything worth-while either.

Gordana could win if she pushes outside of her comfort zone consistently. Her skills don’t seem to be in question, just a sense of her identity as a designer.

I agree about the judging this season. And about Christopher. I thought surely he would be gone before Nicolas. You may be right on the final four. Personally I like Gordona and she has done a few nice pieces. I expected her to be gone by now though.

The designs have been a little disappointing this year. There have been some great garments for sure. But there have been an awful lot of really bad ones too. It’s almost like they’ve reverted to Season 1. Nothing wrong with Season1 though. It just seemed that they had gone more toward professionals in their selection of candidates rather than ones who had very little professional experience. I’m just surprised I guess.

Can’t argue with the final four, but I think the real question is who will win between the outsized personality that is Irina and the incredibly likeable but below-the-radar Carol Hanna. That’s the battle. This kind of reminded me of seasons past where there emerged a clear favorite who had the title to lose and then did. Personalities aside, I remember Daniel and Chloe. Daniel was the teachers’ pet, and Chloe’s passion was questioned. This time it’s Irina the consistent winner (and quite unlikeable) and Carol Hanna, who might not have passion issues but has never seemed to wow the judges. I think they’re both really good. This is where even the better designer can’t make a slip-up on a challenge, their own superior talent notwithstanding. But the real question: Will Carol Hannah and Logan hook up?

P.S. As someone who constantly was annoyed by Michael Kors’ constant leaps to get the right catty soundbite, his presence last night was a welcome relief!
