Mike Tyson, Evander Holyfield have heart to heart on ‘Oprah’

Mike Tyson and Atlanta’s Evander Holyfield used the platform of “Oprah” to chew the fat (metaphorically, not literally) over the infamous incident in 1997 when Tyson bit off part of Holyfield’s right ear durng a fight.

Whatever animus from that time period has faded away.

“I have forgiven,” Holyfield told Tyson and Winfrey in a live show that aired at 4 p.m. today on WSB-TV. “I have moved on and realized it was part of life and things happen. Things happen all the time in my life. My life wouldn’t be what it is if it hadn’t happened.”

“I’m extremely grateful,” Tyson responded. “I’m just so happy to extend my friendship to him. I have a great deal of respect and admiration for him.”

Tyson was on “Oprah” on Monday and had told the audience the offiical “apology” he made many years ago was not sincere at all. But he feels true remorse now. Holyfield called the show and offered the olive branch.

Tyson noted that he has seen Holyfield over the years but always felt uncomfortable. Holyfield was standoffish. “He’d look at me,” Tyson said. “I feel like I’m having a face off every time I meet the guy.” He said he always “wanted to talk. I’ve said hi… I’d give him a limp handshake. I met him at the ESPY Awards. It was so stoic. He wouldn’t talk!”

Holyfield noted that he was the youngest of nine children and would bite his brothers. “That was karma came to roost,” mused Oprah. He wanted to come on the show to prove to kids that yes, even these two can forgive and forget. “We can come together,” he said. “We know you can come together.”

Oprah didn’t go over the incident itself in any detail or probe their feelings to any deep extent.

The media always showed Mike Tyson as a cold, callous and ruthless thug. However, Oprah’s show revealed an different Tyson. Who knew, Mike was this extremely honest, sensitive, shy and funny guy.

Mike Tyson had a very challenging and difficult upbringing. Nevertheless, Tyson was able to utilize the tools he had to catapult his self into becoming a World Champion boxer. I have a greater respect and understanding of the man – Mike Tyson.

Kudos to Evander Holyfield too ! You are truly a mensch – gentleman. It takes a good man to do what you did !

Everyone seems to forget that Tyson was just a young man when all of his problems started and he didn’t have the support most of us have. He was just a money train for Don King and was allowed to run crazy during that time. I’m not saying Tyson shouldn’t have been punished for the rape charge or any other cases that went through the court system, but he never had a chance in life because of the people around him. Now, after watching his interviews, it seems that he has finally found a way to have peace in his life and recognizes when his demons start to arise. It was pretty interesting to see these two boxing greats sit down and discuss this past event.

The media did not always show Tyson as a cold, callous and ruthless thug. Quite the contrary. They constantly tried to show the soft and sensitive side of Tyson. I remember a whole hour dedicated to Tysons passion for saving animals, and his large cats.

Also nobody forgets that Tyson was a young man taken advantage of by Don King. It’s shoved down your throat on every Tyson special. Also the majority of people don’t even believe Tyson actually raped her and that it was more about trying to get money out of him.

I guess watching Oprah turns your minds to mush, huh? It’s hard to really understand things when all of your knowledge comes from an overblown womens gossip TV program.

As a gay man, I really love watching Oprah. I thought this show was especially entertaining watching two greats come together and discuss things like men. I hate the sport of fighting but I can understand where these guys are coming from. Ya c’mon!

Tyson is a dynamic personality. He has been in the global spotlight since he was 18 years old. Kid Dynamite is legendary. He’s well read, well traveled, and loves animals. He’s made some bad choices, but who hasn’t…I wish it was still 1986.
