Mitch Evans out as sports director at WGST-AM

With the Atlanta Braves no longer on WGST-AM, the need for a sports director went away as well so Mitch Evans is out.

Evans was at GST for two and a half years, three Braves seasons. He worked at the Zone for eight years, Dave FM for a year and 99X for six months. Maybe Cumulus and Rock 100.5 and/or the Fan could pick him up now that they have the Braves. He’d also like to do broadcast TV. He hosted a daily Falcons show for three years on FalconsVision while at Dave and not in radio.

“I’ve got no complaints with GST,” Evans said. “They were really great to me. It was totally positive. I’ve left some good friends there. I’ll miss working with them.”

GST no longer has any local shows (including the mornings) during the weekdays, which made it tough to justify keeping Evans anyway.

Somebody said something about a tree falling in the forest, but I don’t think I heard it… Once GST decided to quit all local programming, I chose to quit GST.

I have been a loyal Mitch Evans listener since 790 and have continued listening to his broadcasts on Braves Radio Network. Mitch is a pro, passionate – real as they come.

I know that Mitch will land bigger and better than ever … perhaps continuing with the Braves broadcasts on 680? I hope so.

Mitch is a great guy, a great friend, and a fantastic talent. Anyone smart will hire him.

I second Jimmy’s comments. Loved working with him at DaveFM. Anyone smart enough to hire him is lucky!

Maybe Mitch can get Randi to buy a station.
Poor guy gets bounced around more than Gary Mckee.
Pretty fair talent so I’m sure he will end up somewhere.

Mitch has always worked very hard with the teams he’s been with, whether the Braves, the Falcons at Dave FM or anywhere else and he’s a great guy to boot. New opportunities around the corner, my guess is.

Leave Rodney’s hat alone! Of course, Robin Meade should be MY hat.

Sad to see how Clear Channel has taken a station and killed it! Remember when GST was on top back in the early 90s…If you think WSB-AM is strong…consider that the ENTIRE WSB Line Up used to be at WGST (When GST was a real station, and served the community…not this syndicated crap thats on there now) Shame on CC for killing it!

Should I find it odd that half the posts on here are from fired Atlanta radio jocks? Is this the place where the fired come to cry? Get a life…..

I’d love to hear Mitch back at the Zone. Super nice guy, entertaining, and deserves to work in this town. As far as Pathetic goes, who is crying? The so called “fired jocks” are working, and not crying. They are encouraging a person they share a line of work with. It is warming to see that. It is good to know that Atlanta’s radio community, while trying to get the higher ratings and better advertisement dollar, take time to recognize their own, and try to pick that person up. They are obviously not a pathetic hater like yourself.

Sorry to hear this news…Hope 680 The Fan picks him up so he can work with Chuck and Chernoff as an update guy because the one they have now is AWFUL!!!

I hope it doesn’t turn out like Hullinger…

The death of WGST as a small but competitive entity in Atlanta radio came in 2000 when Pat McDonnel & John Hogan split off the FM signal. How did that work out for them?

Geez, pathetic...

If only I had some money… I could take the talent discarded by GST and WSB over the past couple years and put together a pretty good station.

Mitch is a class act and I know he’ll land on his feet soon.

Sorry, but I think Mitch would go back to work with 790 before he would take a job with the Fan. He still pops into the Mayhem show from time to time. I remember back in the early days of the station when he had his own show with Jamie Dukes. I can see 790 giving him another chance if he wanted it.

A true professional. Mitch will most definitely land on his feet and in a better situation. Great knowledge with the friendly personality to match as well as a passion for what he does. Good thing coming man!!

I thought I fired you when The King, The Kimmer, Denny Schaffer, Gene Henssler, Sam Memmolo, John Adams, and Scruffy the Janitor were all shown the door at The Building of Death.

Maybe as an air traffic controller, I heard something on the Zone a while back on a Mike Bell bit. But maybe he shouldn’t take a call from Randi while on the job.

No morning sports guy at WGST; no problem. Smerconish will give you the Sixers/Flyers scores twice each hour.

Seems a natural that Mitch would land at 680 now thst the Braves are there. Besides, he also has sportstalk background from at 790, where they under-utilized his talents. Unlike Steak, Dimino, Cellini and Bell, “The Mitch” isn’t self-absorbed. Loved him when he was doing that Falcons TV show a few years ago.

I agree with what Jesse says about Mitch.
Mitch is just one of those guys that you love
listening to. And he was excellent on Falcons Daily
and entertaining on Are You Fan Enough?
The ratings at 680 will increase with Mitch there in my opinion.
790’s loss – hopefully it will be 680 The Fan’s
gain! Good luck Mitch!

What percentage of these flattering messages are from friends of Mitch or Mitch himself? No one outside of 790 and 680 even knows who he is. I listened to WGST a little and I barely remember the dude. s

Hmmm….Mitch, you are a class act. Always a gentleman. If the MM would stop sleeping with all the employees, she would have more time for local programming. Just a thought. Keep truckin Mitch. Keep *uckin MF…your sales people love sleepovers!!!
