‘Real Housewives of Atlanta’ recap, episode 11, 10/8/09: Soul to Sole

This is the first episode to air since Ashley “A.J.” Jewell died in the parking lot of a strip club last Friday night, but since this was taped and edited months ago, the only reflection of that is the “in memoriam” note at the end of the show.
The episode lacked any particularly dramatic moments and only a couple of deliciously catty remarks. And the first scene is now a bit sad because it features Kandi Burruss talking about A.J. to Kim Zolciak . She restates the deep divide between her mom and A.J. She did offer some news: her mom was willing to meet with Kandi, A.J. and a therapist. We’ll see the session next week, as noted in the trailers.
That scene, at kids clothing store Justice, stemmed from Kim skipping out on Kandi’s party shown in episode 10.
Kim repeated the excuse she used with me in a phone interview last Friday: her daughter Brienna was sick. Kandi gave Kim a bit of a hard time about it but ultimately forgave her because you could tell she wasn’t all that peeved. At Justice, Kim spent $616.32 using a “Titanium” American Express which requires $250,000 in expenditures per year. Kim claims that she got it without Big Poppa’s help. Sure. We all believe you Kim.
If this A.J. death hadn’t happened, I’d call Kim and ask her about that, but alas, that’s not terribly important given the current context of what’s going on.
Otherwise, there wasn’t a single truly noteworthy moment to focus on. Instead, here’s a quick summary of the plotlines:
- Lisa Wu Hartwell tries to get preggers. So far, no luck seeking No. 2 with her second husband Ed Hartwell. Hartwell, who spent six years in the NFL, then two more years trying to get back into the NFL, decided to give up for good since his knee was never going to be the same. Lisa would prefer he not go back but at the same time, is bummed she won’t be seeing that $3.5 million a year salary anymore. She tries to tell Kandi she lives modestly, then Kandi calls her on it.
“You have a bowling alley in your house,” Kandi said. “You complained you couldn’t get an elevator!” (After this season’s taping ended around June, Lisa and Ed do eventually downsize, moving to a more modest home they already owned after short-selling the pad with the bowling alley.)
- Kandi takes another step forward in her efforts to become a solo artist instead of just a successful songwriter. She flew to Los Angeles to meet a rep at Capitol Records. The meeting seems to go well but I haven’t heard of her signing with anybody as of now. Budgets are tight, she said, and it’s tough for an artist of her background to break in as a solo artist even though she had hits as a member of a group in the 1990s.
- NeNe Leakes puts together a fundraiser for her Twisted Hearts Foundaton to help women who have suffered physical and emotional abuse from their former male partners. Her idea: a charity run in high heels. The turnout is not huge but it looks like goofy fun. Skinny gay hairdresser Dwight Eubanks, of course, looks especially absurd in his high heels and a leotard get-up which shows off his, um, package.
NeNe, in the final scene of the hour, talks with a relative and explains how she might be going to Athens to meet Alan, who she thinks may be her actual biological father (as opposed to Curtis, who claimed to be her biological dad but wasn’t.) We then see a trailer showing her meeting said “dad.”
- Sheree Whitfield goes to the W Hotel at the Perimeter with Dwight and plans her fashion show. Or maybe it’s more Dwight planning it and Sheree nodding her head a lot, then bitching about it to the cameras. “Dwight,” she said, “just likes to hear himself talk.”
She also slapped down Lisa’s fashion show from a few episodes ago even though she didn’t even bother to show up. “I don’t settle for average,” Sheree proclaimed. “That’s where Lisa and I differ.” Yes, that was the cattiest remark of the hour.
The scene also included my favorite Dwight quote of the hour: “I was a gift from God sent to Sheree to help her out with this event. This is what I do!” Yes, God is a true bestower of such wonderful gifts. He hands out the Dwight Eubanks of the world like Snickers bars during Halloween.
- Despite getting back together with Big Poppa (at least during the taping), Kim plans to work on her wig line. We see a trailer in which she sees her first sample wig.
Kandi was not up for being on “Watch What Happens,” a live show Bravo airs at midnight after the 10 p.m. episode (repeated at 11). Kim called in: “I saw her tonight at the wake. It was difficult. One of the hardest things I’ve had to go through in my life. It’s tough. She specifically asked me to tell her Twitter, Facebook fans, she’s incredibly grateful and really appreciates the prayers from all you guys.”
She later added, “Kandi and A.J. really loved each other. It’s so tragic and sad. He’s a really good person and had a good heart.”
Next week promises to be a heart tugger.

My hate of Nene grows every week. She is so full of herself, and why does she constantly critique Kims wig, when she wears one herself? Why does Lisa constantly belittle Keith Sweat? He got the kids, so he must have not been too bad to her. She needs to let it go, she is the messed up one, not him. Kandi, keep your head up, glad you got a deal. NeNe is NUTS. WTH, that was a pitiful turnout to her “charity” run? She needs to stop wearing those off the shoulder moomoos! I agree she has definitely let the fame go to head and is the LEAST real person on the show. Greg seems so laid back, I guess if the stripper stories and the timeline of their relationship are true; she must have whipped him with those tricks she keeps in her pocketbook.. and she calls Kim a trashbox hooka..YYYYYEEEEAAAAAHHHH RRRRIIIGGGGHHHTTTT!
Kim is shallow, but at least she owns up to it. As for the dating and being engaged to a married man. I went through divorce and was separated. It took three years to finalize that divorce and I dated a very nice man during that time. We met 6 months after the separation and we planned to get married.
She-Ray, is so self-absorbed. She is going to go Postal on Dwight’s busted azz next week and I can’t wait.

Condolences to Kandi and AJ’s kids on their loss of a friend and father.
As for Lisa just because Keith Sweat is good to her kids, does not mean he’s good to her. I was in a similar situation my ex-husband was great to my daughter and and a#$ hole when it came to me, when I left I told my daughter I could not stay for her, the man is rotten to the core. So don’t down play Lisa’s assessment of Keith unless you have been in that situation you don’t know. I applaud you Lisa, my husband had money to wasn’t enough to make me stay……

I am truly dissapointed in the way this show has grown. Honest to God, it has gone from bad to worst. But, its like a train wreck, you just can’t stop watching. I think Nene has issues that only God and therapy can help. I don’t even believe her attempts at good are really meant for good. I think they are more publicity stunts than anything else. She reminds me of “William Hung” from American Idol. Sheree tries too hard, in order for people to be “jealous of your success”, you have to actually succeed. And not succeed at marrying a ball player and then trying to bleed him dry because you have “limited education and earning potential.” And, if thats the case, Obama is giving money for mothers to go back to school. Lisa Wu seems to be trying hard to take advantage of her second chance in life, and I can’t knock her hussle. Kandi seems to be handling her business. Kim is not even worth talking about. I can only hope that Big Poppa marries her and gives her a dose of her own medicine.

I just love the RHOA, although it was kind of difficult watching it after AJ’s death. My condolences go out to Khandi, his kids and family.

Healing the Sole\Heeling the Sole, I really liked the title of the event. NeNes’ idea was for a good cause, but she should have opted for a diffent event. The event she chose reminded me of pleasure ladies of the evening with names like “Crystal and Alize, running from law enforcment.
She would have been better off having the abused women model heels (if they were up to it) on the walkway or catwalk than having people run up and down the street in a very nice subdivision in heels. I recall NeNe saying that she was the “Jones”. That wasn’t a “Jones” type move! That was some ghetto type ish although she stated “I’m not ghetto, I’m from Athens”. So is Buffie the Body! I’m trying to figure out if Kim lied to Rodney Ho when in his 10/2 article he asked her why she didn’t show up for Kandi’s performance. It seemed like when Kandi saw Kim at Justice, it was as if they were seeing each other for the first time since the performance. With the questions that Kandi asked and the explanations Kim offered (preferring to stay home her sick child than find a babysitter), it didn’t seem like they already had this discussion before seeing each other at the store. Unless the producers asked them to “stage” this part? Rodney was right in his article about the producers giving the impression that Kim callously skipped the performance. Maybe the detail of Kim calling Kandi beforehand was unknown to Bravo as they filmed and edited those two shows? Several people claim Kim lies, so I wonder if this a piece of evidence of it?

Nene is a real trouble maker… Lisa is a lot smarter than she acts, but she seems to follow Nene around like a puppy. If she were to wise up, she’d realize that Nene and she are just as big a couple of smack talkers as Kim and Sheree.
Sheree is rather full of herself, and kind of mean. If Lisa had such a huge angry reaction to Kim talking about her behind her (lisa) back, then why not go off on Sheree as well. Sheree has said some nasty things about LIsa behind her back.
Kim is a gold digger, and a mistress, but she is real about it. I am sure Poppas wife knows about it, and is probably with him for the same damn reason. Nene used to be a stripper, I am positive that not every guy she gave a lap dance to was single… come on.
Kandi is a sweet and wonderful woman. If anything each housewife could learn something from her. I hope that her friendship with Kim is genuine, and Kim really cares for her, because Kandi needs someone right now. My prayers are with Kandi.

It was kind of sad watching last night with what has happened with AJ. Kandi stay in prayer and keep your head up.
As for the rest of the cast, they really need to just stop all of the pretending. Sheree, your line is still not in stores, nor is Lisa’s (clothes were horrible), Ed should have been given up that dream and gotten another job by now, then maybe you would still be in your mansion. Kim you are a perfect example of a dumb blonde, engaged to a married man that still lives with his wife. Nene or Hene you just need to stop b/c you still are renting and have no furniture in your home, the money that you raise for the foundation is probably paying your bills, b/c your husband was busted on tv for his real estate fraud so he is probably not making any money. All of them need to go an get a real job, except for Kandi, we know she has real money.

I don’t know where to begin this show has taken individuals places we never knew we could go. I’m not understanding how in heck none of them can get along, or always stabbing each other in the back over nothing. It’s too much competition,with really alot of females that don’t have anything except for Kandi. All this show is a bunch of drama that never ends.Nene is too far gone, Kim is a hot mess, Sheree is a natural born hater, Lisa is like a want to be to me. I miss Deshawn her spirit was so real and she was sweet. So as far as I’m concerned we have a show that only get’s credit in the trash section of the world of t.v. I see the hurt in Ed’s eyes too but I’ve seen it since the episode where he organized that romantic dinner for Lisa and she was sort of snarky and fake with her comments about how wonderful it is…I’m starting wonder if it is from more than realizing his football career is over.

The men with the heels are abit much. As a person who plans to move to ATL next summer, I am really hoping that the gay scene is not as hyped as it appears to be on this show. Not sure if I am can handle men parading around in women’s clothing, sporting heels and handbags. Although, I must admit the gay friend (Michael) from LA was rocking his. He pulled it off. I love his personality.He is flaming and doesn’t care who likes it or not…lol!
The best part of the show last night was Dwight running in those heels at NeNe’s house. H-I-L-A-R-I-O-U-S!!! He is quite a character.
Kandi has shaped up to be a great member of this cast. My condolences go out to her and AJ’s family.

I agree w/Nicholas – Sherry’s (sherre) body is too muscular. You can fit and toned without all the muscles. Sherry cut back on the weights. Sherry is such a hot mess. She tries so hard to be relevant and fashion forward. If a woman has class, exposure, experience, intelligence and knowledge – SHE DOESN’T HAVE TO ANNOUNCE IT! ARTICULATE IT! She just is. @Dana – I don’t need to watch it to know it’s buffoonery. I’ve never seen a full episode as I don’t allow cable in my home. You’d have to pay me $60+ or whatever cable is now to allow this in my house. Through work and professional circles, I’ve interacted with most of the “Ladies”.
