BET’s ‘Tiny & Toya’ coming back for a second season

tiny-and-toyaBET’s “Tiny & Toya,” a reality show shot here in Atlanta, has been given the green light for a second season.

The show, which featured the lives of rap star T.I.’s squeeze and former Xscape singer Tameka “Tiny” Cottle and fellow rapper Lil Wayne’s ex-wife Antonia “Toya” Carter, averaged 1.9 million viewers over eight episodes this past summer.

Tiny came across as sweet and truly pained by T.I.’s entry into jail for weapons possession. For years, T.I. had encouraged Tiny to just raise the kids. She is now attempting to restart her music career and open a nail salon.

Toya struggled to move on after her divorce with Lil Wayne. In the last episode, she went on a promising blind date. She also had to grapple with a drug-addicted mom in New Orleans.

Overall, the show lacked the ridiculous absurdist drama of “The Real Housewives of Atlanta” but the pair came across as warm and likable. Ratings were clearly good enough to merit a second season.

When the show starts production again and when it will air has not been determined.

Oh great.. yet another group of trashy “ladies” who think they are so famous in Atlanta. Funny.. before all of these dumb shows, no one ever heard of these two… or Kim, Sheree, Kandi, NeNe or Lisa for that matter. Where are the ATL shows with white people? Lol instead we have the trashiest of the gutter. Entertaining – but not entertainment.

I say congrats to Tiny and Toya! Everyone has a life experience to share and I’m glad that BET has given these ladies the opportunity to share their story with the world. They are certainly more that “baby mamas” as some people would like to portray them and the program definitely shows that. It’s comical that some people classify them as “embarrassing” as if they need to make apologies for being who they are. Just like any other race of people, African Americans have a plethora of lifestyles from doctors and lawyers to drug addicts. Their life experience is what it is. I say kudos to you ladies for working with what you have to create your own brand and creating your own wealth. Keep doing what you’re doing and brush the haters off. Because when it’s all said and done…. they will keep watching your show and then go back to their little cubicles to work.

Who watches this trash? The sheep that voted for Obama and now are having second, third, and fourth thoughts? T.I. has a new squeeze in prison honey and will probably hook you up with some disease when he comes home. “I mean, you have the first mainstream African-American who is articulate and bright and clean and a nice-looking guy. I mean, that’s a storybook, man.” – Joe Biden.

Great to know that Atlanta is becoming the setting for all trashy and hoodrat filled reality TV shows. Yet another reason why our city is being flushed down the toilet. Welcome to Black Hollywood.

Why, pray tell, in this economy, does the AJC pay someone named Rodney Ho a living wage to watch and report on this filth?

Is there nothing better to do down there?

I don’t understand. The Science section is cut, but Rodney sitting around and watching (I didn’t catch the name of this show) is NOT cut? The Faith & Values section is cut, but this is not?

The paper is falling apart as we speak, but there’s always $ for this?

Somebody please explain.

I no longer call the AJC the “news” paper.

And when this story gets hits, it’s not bc we are interested in it. It’s bc we are disgusted, and we want to see if the $ we pay for the paper REALLY IS going to this.

It is. Sad.

It is amazing to me that in 2009 there is still so many blatant racist. Black people put up with all of you all’s bs shoes for 100 years. Get over it. A great example of complete and uncut trailor trash is Dog The Bounty Hunter. Straight garbage. Absolute trash. Don’t get me wrong there is plenty more where that came from. So before you get into white and black think about your situation. Hell most of you live in a trailor park now. I know it eats you up that blacks are having so much success. You move your prejudice ass to the back of the bus.

“Our City”… hmmmmm… meaning what? Who exactly does the city belong to? All residents of the city? Or “certain” residents of the city? Wow. The ignorance still present in 2009 is unbelievable.
And if Atlanta is “Black Hollywood”… what exactly is wrong with that? It seems to me that a certain segment of the population is just mad that black people are starting the share a piece of the pie instead of just fading into the background and taking scraps from others. Maybe the news hasn’t reached certain people yet… you do know that the Confederacy lost right? It is now officially OK for black people to make money.

It is not racism that causes people to talk down about shows like this. I am black and I have no desire to watch this show. But then again, I also will not watch the other “reality” shows that I constantly hear about like John & Kate Plus 8, RHOA, whatever that neighbor-against-neighbor show was that took place locally, much less Dog The Bounty Hunter, etc. In my opinion, all of these shows are a waste of time to watch.

Momager77 – why does the bottom of the barrel always have to be featured on these reality shows? And why do people stick up for these clowns? Why can’t our people demand more? I’m tired of seeing these images on TV constantly. Can we get some balance? Unfortunately, this is an accurate portrayal of this city lately.

This is one show that I do not watch. I get so tired of African-Americans portraying themselves as buffoons. It makes no sense. These two women are or were married to rappers, what a big accomplishment? WTF? I mean really, whatever happened to going off to get an education and becoming successful with a legitimate career and not focused on having kids out od wedlock and being with sorry men? I just do not get it. If T.I. and Lil’ Wayne were the last men on earth, I don’t give a rat’s behind how much money they made, I would drown myself! I really hope that children do not play into this and that children who watch are inspired to do better and be better. B

Chardonnay I will grant you this. Not the greatest show, however I can take a few of our bad shows to the millions of there bad shows. Can you remember when there was only 2 or 3 of our shows on? These type of blogs always turn racial though because there are still so many racist in the world. By the way Tiny sang with the R&B group Excape. Also some of what you see the rappers do and say is for show. Alot of these guys are intelligent believe it or not.

Some of you are so very judgmental and critical of things that have absolutely nothing to do with you. If they are so bad, don’t watch and/or read “entertainment” articles about them or the show. That being said…I like Tiny, but Toya’s very annoying with that darn “accent” of hers. I have new found respect for Tiny. She is likeable. I didn’t expect her to be when I first watched the show. I think it’s admirable that she and her parents are close and that they also love TI. Honestly though, I wouldn’t have watched the first episode had Tiny not had a direct relationship to TI.

Chardonnay,

For every “black” show that exhibits buffoonery, there are two “white” shows that also exhibit buffoonery…Paris Hilton’s BFF crap, Hulk Hogan’s show, those Playboy mansion idiots, Tequila, Celebrity Rehab, etc. Stupidity isn’t race specific. Not a single show on tv is embarrassing to me as a black female. Those “housewives” aren’t a representation of me, my sisters, nor my friends.

rodrj32 you’ve stooped the same levels as the people you’re talking about. Most white people don’t live in trailer parks just like most blacks don’t live in the projects. But the way to show that “blacks are having so much success” is NOT in the form of Tiny & Toya. As a black female I will not watch a show that celebrates the very things that are tearing the race apart (e.g., single motherhood). Why are they on TV? For getting knocked up with out-of-wedlock kids by rich men. You don’t get a standing o for that. When BET elevates it’s programming then maybe I’ll tune in but I won’t watch the channel at all. As a race we have a hell of a lot more to offer than crackheads, alcoholics, and babies mamas. Shame on BET for perpetuating existing stereotypes and not taking any responsibility.

@ Greg…. Have you ever watched the show? Why would you consider these women bottom of the barrel? Tiny came from a very good family… her parents appear to be decent, respectable people who have been married for 20+ years. She made her money based on her own hard work and talent and didn’t make trashy, over sexed music. The women in her circle for the most part are successful women. She also uses the show to advocate for more awareness of Alzheimer’s disease. Except for a few miscellaneous conversations and the episode where he went to jail, this show has absolutely nothing to do with T.I. In fact, most of the show is centered around her trying to promote her music groups and her relationship with Toya as they try and support each other through their respective life challenges. As for Toya…. this young woman came from an absolutely horrible environment. She had a drug addict mother who didn’t raise her properly. Whether you are embarrassed by that fact is irrelevant… the fact is that is her reality, she was born into that existence, she lived it and has risen from that world. She has escaped a bad situation and as far as I can tell is doing everything she can to try and better herself as well as help her family members. She can’t go back and change the womb that she was born into, nor can she change her past. What she can do, and what she is doing, is blaze her own new path and making a better life for her and her daughter despite it all. For that reason I think this show is worth watching. Whether we like to admit it or not… the crack/heroine epidemics of the 1980’s and 1990’s devastated the black community and Toya’s generation are those children who came up in that time. She could have been like so many others who just followed in their parent’s drug addicted foot steps and just faded into obscurity and “the system”. But she didn’t, she survived, she made it and she is a work in progress. I’m inspired by that.

@Greg…. and yes, I agree with your point… there should be more of a balance of quality programming and “real” reality shows portraying a more positive African American Experience. I just don’t think that should discount these people’s experience because it is their reality.

GAGirl… You have to take into consideration who owns BET… What do you expect?

And for everyone else, the reality is that when any show requires subtitles, even though the show is all in English and the subtitles are too, then you need to realize there’s something wrong. That’s when these ladies need to put down the camera and pick up a book. Plain and simple.

In regards to the comments about black vs. white shows, the reality is there aren’t enough black shows out there to balance out the garbage. Yes, there’s Roseanne, yes there was Married With Children, and yes there was and is a plethora of garbage showcasing white people. But there are also good, quality shows. We don’t have that. We have an imbalance of garbage. RHOA is garbage – I’ve seen one episode, and I could barely make it through to the end. I watched Tiny and Toya – again, one episode, and it took all I had not to change the channel. I can’t watch either of these shows again. It’s just not in me to take an entire hour out of my otherwise valuable life to take in so much waste.

This whole argument of it being “entertaining” reminds me of minstrel shows and other demeaning television shows and movies that we were subjected to back in the day. I honestly don’t see a difference, other than the fact that these women can’t say they’re doing it to feed their families – remember, they all claim they already have money. So what’s the excuse?

To Chardonnay, I agree with some of your thoughts; but here’s a thought. I don’t buy Rap or listen to it, but I’m open minded enough to give credit where credit is due. Lil Wayne should be a role model for the poor youth of today (Black, White, Latino, whatever nationality). He came from the gutters of New Orleans and is now college educated, on the Forbes List (millionaires), owns his own label and catalog of songs. Not bad, right??? So, I’m sure you’re changing your mind now…about him being the last man on earth. :-)

I know, AW. Viacom ultimately has control but Bob Johnson and all the other black execs still on board have plenty of say-so as well. The ultimate responsibility is in the audience, though. When people stop watching this CRAP and demand more for themselves then maybe something will change. Black folks have to wake up and realize these images are put out here for a reason and we just blindly and stupidly buy into it. Momager77 why are you campaigning so hard for this show???? Are you Tiny’s cousin or something??? The point here is that even if this is THEIR reality, the general consensus is that this is OUR reality. That’s what I have a problem with. And what is on tv to counter this perception??? Nothing. I’d love for someone to list how many truly positive shows are on tv that portray blacks in a good light (this does not include any T.P. shows IMO). *crickets chirping* This is exactly why Bill Cosby was so important to black culture.

BTW AW, I’m lmao @ the subtitles comment. I obviously haven’t watched this show but I’ve heard Tiny open her mouth before and it’s just all bad. Like you said, if they’d crack open a book instead of showing off the newest designer bag they could get somewhere.

Roger – University of Houston (Poli Sci major). He got his GED and kept going.

AreYouSerious – point well taken. My issue with Tiny is T.I. to be honest with you. The reality is that you can make all the progress in the world, and do something as dumb as connect with the wrong people, and end up destroying all of that progress. I don’t understand why women end up with felony-convicting men and STAY WITH THEM. You can’t rise from the ashes if you insist on taking them with you.

Momager77

@GA Girl… I am not campaigning for the show and no I’m not related to either of these ladies. I just believe that everyone deserves second chances. We have all done things in our lives that we are not so proud of and at some point were given the opportunity for redemption in the eyes of those that care about us. I think everyone deserves that opportunity. Yes, they had children out of wedlock and perhaps didn’t follow the traditional route (high school, college, career, marriage, children). But how many of us have and how dare we as a people be so unforgiving and judgmental. These ladies are taking the hand that they were dealt in life and running with it. We should be attacking the system that puts so many people into these negative situations and the media conglomerates that perpetrate more negative images than positive of black people. But let’s not attack these ladies personally for being who they are and being courageous enough to let their lives unfold on TV while they do actually try to bettwe themselves. Sounds like we have a lot of “crabs in a barrel” on here who would much rather tear individuals down than address the real issues.

Honestly, if we didn’t have shows like this, we wouldn’t have entertainment. Who really wants to watch a boring show after a long day of hard work or school?? I rather watch a reality show (whether it has black or white ppl on it) to make me laugh!!! Anyone who doesn’t find these shows entertaining might as well leave their tv off because reality television is the new thing of this century! Some of the shows are ignorant yes but at least it makes me laugh. Most of these reality tv stars do these things that we normal folk would never think to do in a million yrs. At least u get to see the outcome without actually experiencing it, that’s how I feel. Keep us laughing ladies (well the few of us who don’t mind watching the show).
