Athens Bulldog rock station goes Top 40 with Power 100.1
After a decade as a rock station, 100.1./the Bulldog has been put down in Athens in favor of the top 40 sounds of Power 100.1.

Until yesterday evening, the station did a day-long stunt pretending to be “government controlled” Obama Radio. Naturally, some folks actually took it seriously. The station got calls from all over the nation wondering what was going on, which is a good sign for any stunt. It funnelled music from Cox Radio’s Hawaiian station, interspersed it with speeches from Obama (voiced by a guy down in Greenville) and threw in silly party songs such as “Hot Hot Hot” and “I’m Too Sexy.”
So Athens now has access to several top 40-style stations (Star and Q100 reach the area, at laest in vehicles) and 95.5/The Beat comes in loud and clear. Rock is gone.
Kevin Steele, the program director, said it was seeking a format that generated more advertisers. It hopes a more mass appeal format that draws more UGA kids will work. The station is a blend of the Beat and Star in terms of being a big broader in its music mix. The station is jockless but will add jocks at some point.

This is unbelievable! I’m 20 and i loved that station. I can’t believe they got rid of a rock station for rap. It just shows what this country has come to!!!

Bulldog was the best station on radio.Good luck trying to replace the punch the clock morning show.No matter who they find no way they compare to Chris and Evan.

That’s real bright, two Top 40 stations already broadcast there, so let’s add another one and we’ll get bigger and better for sure. Lost me for good, Kris and Evan were the only decent talk in the morning that mixed in some music (ROCK) and weren’t juvenile stupid funny. Jeez, Obama Controlled Govt Radio on Oct 1st was better than the crap they’re playing now. Sad

I actually thought this was a joke, because who would listen to music that bad? That WAS the best radio station by far. Kris, Evan and the music rocked. Why would you copy something that is already being broadcast (rap crap) on other stations in Athens? Lots of people I know listened to that station and now it is a bunch of rap crap? What is wrong with you people? I will never tune in to 100.1 ever again, not with that pathetic music. This is worse than pathetic.

I also thought this was a joke. They gave absolutely no warning. One day it was same as always, then next day, verbal defecation is emanating from my car speakers. I kept tuning back to see if it had changed back yet and literally cursed at the radio many times. So this is the real deal? You’re killing rock? This is a bigger tragedy to Athens than Zinkhan.

Why would you duplicate something (Star 94) that already comes in loud and clear in Athens? As for chasing ad dollars by trying to appeal to UGA kids, most don’t listen to broadcast radio; they have ipods or sat radio. Doesn’t anybody at Cox do market research? Completely clueless.

I loved this station. I’m from Gainesville; reception had slowly gotten really bad since the change to 100.1 but I could still manage to hear the morning show if I was lucky: Flathead Co. Montana Police Blotter, Miami Vice, and Go Fark Yourself, plus the accompanying dialogue. Really started my day with a grin. Now, it’s a grimace.

OK, 100.1 is NOT just rap. SO please stop saying that. They play current music that is popular right now. I know there’s 94.1, but that channel is pretty much the Miley Cyrus/Taylor Swift Channel, and is much worse than 100.1.
