680/The Fan’s Chris Rude fighting cancer

Chris Rude, 680/The Fan’s morning host of the Rude Awakening, is going through chemotherapy and radiation to battle a cancerous tumor behind his throat.

“He’s doing well, the doctors are positive. We have known for awhile,” said Norm Schrutt, his agent. “He’s been going through chemo for six weeks. He’s been working every day.”

Rude, who is actually a pretty private, shy guy off the air, announced it on his show yesterday.

Why did he hold off so long? “He didn’t want a pity party,” Schrutt said.

David Dickey, Rude’s boss at the Fan, said he’s not sure how much time Rude may have to take off down the road when the radiation treatments start.

“Luckily, nothing has spread, thank the Lord,” Dickey said. “They caught it immediately when it popped up. Chris was very diligent getting it checked out.”

Rude has been at the Fan for more than six years after a long run at 96rock. “This is a family run company,” Dickey said. “Like any good family, we’re behind him. We’re hoping for …

“Real Housewives” recedes a bit in ratings, Taylor Swift, Pink are hot on Atlanta radio

Last week really proved that it’s August when a meaningless pre-season football game was the most viewed program of the week in Atlanta.

The Falcons beating the Rams drew 265,000 viewers this past Friday night. That was 14,000 more than the No. 2 program, TNT’s “The Closer.” (left)

Third? A repeat of “America’s Funniest Home Videos” on WSB-TV. Hard to interpret that one except to say there’s a reason that show’s been on for two decades.

In the meantime, Bravo’s “The Real Housewives of Atlanta” dropped from 6 to 20 and lost nearly a quarter of its Atlanta audience from the previous week, drawing 157,000 viewers locally. There was no catfighting this particular hour and the show competed for the first time against Lifetime’s “Project Runway” (which opened a very strong 4.2 million overall.) Nationally, “Housewives” dropped off less, to 2.8 million from a peak of 3.3 million.

BET’s Atlanta-based “Tiny & Toya” last week hit its season low with 1.46 million viewers. That’s not a …

Holla back! Frankie & Neffe spinoff show debuts

Keyshia Cole is gone. But her sister Neffe and mom Frankie live on in reality land.

The pair held a party at Uptown Lounge & Restaurant in downtown Atlanta last night to celebrate the launch of their spinoff show “Frankie & Neffe,” which debuted on BET at 10:30 p.m.

Frankie is an indelible reality star.

At age 49, she has now been off drugs for a couple of years but remains a whirling dervish of energy. Both on the show and in person, she utters “Holla” with as much frequency as Flavor Flav yelps “Yeah booooy!”

She also acts like she’s 19 years old while poor Neffe, her daughter, rolls her eyes and sighs – a lot. She is a hyperactive jitterbug at the club, hugging people, posing for pictures, dancing, never stopping.

Check the pair out outside the club before the party started:

The first episode features Neffe and Frankie adjusting to life outside the Keyshia Cole womb. (Keyshia had brought both to Atlanta from Oakland to help stabilize their chaotic lives.). Like most …

America’s Got Talent recap, fourth 12 of 48 (UPDATED)

Drew Stevyns

Drew Stevyns

“America’s Got Talent” brought out another solid week of semifinal skills in both the vocal and dance categories A couple of acts that deserve to get through are going to be left out this week. After tonight’s results show, the top 20 will be ready to go.

Who will get through: Ishaara, Barbara Padilla, EriAm Sisters, Erik & Rickie, Drew Stevyns (left)

Who I’d like to see get through: EriAm Sisters, Drew Stevyns, Ishaara, Barbara Padilla, Pam Martin’s Top Dogs

I was deeply impressed by Drew Stevyns. I did not see that one coming.

Mia Boostrum will fall through the cracks. If Ishaara misses the mark, Recycled Percussion will sneak in. Or the dog act. It’s going to be a tight race.

UPDATE: In a bit of a psych, the show placed the EriAm Sisters and Drew Stevyns together, making it seem one was going home. First, Drew made it to the top 20. Bravo! The EriAm Sisters assumed they were goners. Nick Cannon, the host, let them stew a few seconds, then said they were …

ABC’s “Shark Tank” gives Marietta entrepreneur Lori Lite $250K

Marietta entrepreneur Lori Lite jumped into the shark pool and came out unscathed — and with $250,000.

In an episode of the ABC show “Shark Tank” Sunday, Lite showed off her line of books and CDs to help kids under stress and convinced real estate mogul Barbara Corcoran to buy 50 percent of her company for $250,000.

“I always had this dream of mine that one of my books would be held up on national television. I just never thought it’d be me!” Lite told me Monday. She hopes the infusion of funds and mentorship with Corcoran will allow her to market her expanding Stress Free Kids line.

The show is set up pretty simply: five successful “sharks” who have cash to invest listen to entrepreneurs seeking funding and willing to concede some (or all) control for cash. They show a product line or service and the judges give them offers — or not. For anybody with a business bent, it’s actually a lot of fun.

ABC, in the episode taped last month, provided the back story. Lite, a …

Listen to Kim Zolciak’s new single ‘Tardy to the Party’ – if you dare. The RHOA Atlanta mag cover

Kim Zolciak, meet Auto Tune. Her not very country sounding dance tune “Tardy for the Party” was conveniently leaked to the Web.

Castmate and R&B singer-songwriter Kandi Burruss did her best to Britney-ize Kim with this song. And it’s pretty catchy.

Kim’s aspirations for being a country singer is a bit quixotic — and smartly ignored. Dance works better because it’s much easier to disguise vocal inadequacies with dance tunes.

What do you think of Kim’s new song?

  • It’s got a good beat and you can dance to it.
  • Sheesh! All that technological editing renders Kim’s voice unrecognizable. Thumbs down!
  • I refuse to listen to it on principle.

It’s now being promoted on her Web site though she writes that it wasn’t supposed to get out and they are attempting to get sites to take it down to no avail.

Trekkie (or Trekker) alert: William Shatner to join Leonard Nimoy at Dragoncon!

Fans of the original “Star Trek” are now falling over themselves twice over with excitement: DragonCon has added William Shatner to its lineup.

He joins fellow “Trek” castmate Leonard Nimoy is already set to appear. And this on top of first-timersPatrick Stewart and Kate Mulgrew.

It’s easily DragonCon’s biggest Star Trek draw ever. Shatner will only be there on Friday, Sept. 4, though. The pair are set to be together at a 10 a.m. session at Marriott Marquis. Nimoy will also do panel appearances at 4 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. Sunday morning. Both men will sign autographs at the Walk of Fame.

“It does my 48-year-old little Trekkies’ heart good,” said Eric Watts, who has been overseeing Star Trek events at DragonCon for 17 years as a volunteer. (Only two people are paid: the office manager and assistant office manager.)

This is the first appearance at this convention for either actor, Watts noted.

Nimoy, he said, has avoided scifi conventions for years to focus on his …

Top 10 Atlanta reality stars of all time

The Best of the Big A is doing a survey asking folks for their favorite Atlanta reality star of all time. So the organizer Shane Harrison asked me for my top 5. I could not narrow it down to a top 5 so I gave him a top 10.

Atlanta has had its fair share of reality “stars” over the past decade. They’ve shown up on “America’s Got Talent,” “American Idol,” “The Real World,” “The Amazing Race,” you name it..

We are going to exclude the likes of Bobby Brown & Whitney Houston(“Being Bobby Brown”), Evander Holyfield (“Dancing With the Stars”), T.I. (“T.I.; Road to Redemption) and Jeff Foxworthy (“Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader/”) since they were already famous before their respective shows came along. But we are including former Atlantans.

Here are my 10 favorites. Feel free to add your own. (Mychael Knight from “Project Runway” and Frankie & Neffe from “Keyshia Cole” come to mind)

1) NeNe Leakes (cast member on “The Real Housewives of …

There Goes the Neighborhood recap, episode 3

The Bussiere family, comprised of Tom (dad), Susan (mom), Marcia (grandmother) (top row, left to right), Elise (daughter) and Jake (son) (bottom row, left to right).

The Bussiere family, comprised of Tom (dad), Susan (mom), Marcia (grandmother) (top row, left to right), Elise (daughter) and Jake (son) (bottom row, left to right).

This show, after three episodes, has really become “Survivor” without the extreme deprivation dynamics and “Big Brother” minus the addictive stupidity. What’s left? Some reasonably nice families in a Kennesaw suburb minus A/C and electricity fighting for $250,000 with a few tears but not much drama.

The dynamics of four “insider” families and two “outsiders” meant the two “outsiders” were put up for elimination. The one that did not have an alliance with an insider was cut: the Bussieres.

Early on, the Bussieres, who came from Massachusetts, explained their distance from the others by their New England background. People up north just didn’t just hang out with neighbors as much. This doesn’t bode well for their future.

The Upshaws’ oldest son Christopher convinces the family to plays it tough. They decide to …

With the summer season nearing its end and most schools back in session, many of the most popular shows are also closing shop like the local pools and summer camps.

Two of the season’s biggest shows TNT’s “The Closer” (Monday) and USA’s “Royal Pains” (Thursday) conclude. Showtime’s hot new show with Edie Falco “Nurse Jackie,” ABC Family’s freshman series “Make It Or Break It” and TNT’s sophomore drama “Raising the Bar” also end their summers Monday. Odds are good all five shows will be back in 2010.
