Former 99X host Steve Barnes in an AirTran ad, his “High Rise” show gets picked up by WAGA-TV
Former 99X and DaveFM host Steve Barnes was recently seen in a “Drop Dead Diva” episode playing a corrupt contractor.
And in this AirTran ad below, Barnes plays some dude sleeping in coach in a middle seat. Barnes in coach in a middle seat? And yes, the host is Peter Graves, reprising his role from “Airplane” 29 years ago.
“It was fun doing the ad and there are actually some versions where I wake up,” he wrote to me. “Actually, when I auditioned for the ad I was auditioning for a totally different AirTran ad. When they cast me in this one I was thrilled because I thought it was very funny.”
Barnes has worked with AirTran at 99X, Dave FM and for his current online series “High Rise.”
And good news for him: “High Rise” is coming back in 2010 with 30-minute episodes instead of the five-minute snippet season one. And he won’t be working with Comcast On Demand anymore. Instead, he’s got a deal with WAGA-TV. I’ll post more details later in the year as the date gets closer.

99x is better now than it ever was. For one, they actually play music in the morning. And they are playing good new rock. I’d like to hear more new music, but at least we’re not stuck with just DaveFM.

if you listened to 96 rock, you would not have understood 99x and i am sad for you. try not smoking when pregnant. steve barnes knows more about music than pretty much anyone. i can’t speak on the commercials, haven’t seen them.

Funny…Steve Barnes playing someone who is asleep. Pretty much what he’s done to the people of Atlanta for years.
Honestly – is there a person in Atlanta radio/tv that loves himself more than this guy? Besides Steak Shapiro of course – but he’s in a league by himself.

I would love to see a big screen adaptation of an unknown superhero, Captain Back Acne. Barnes could play himself. I think Barnes should make it happen – he was amazing in that Corey Feldman film a few years back. HAHAHA Capt’n Back Acne strikes again, love the sound of that.

Barnes pretty much was a jerk on 99x, which is why people still love to hate him. Between acting like a child with other station dj’s to being a combative jerk, he did not have the most stellar personality.
It got so bad that one of the last April Fool’s jokes had him beating up Clark Howard. His rep was so bad at that point that it was believable.

Funny, I always thought Barnes was fairly entertaining while knowing that I would never have wanted to be his friend in real life.
Anywho, in the beginning of that commercial Peter Graves says, “interweb.” I get that that is supposed to be ironic when the hip kids say it. But is it still ironic when an old guy says it?
