680/The Fan becomes the Atlanta flagship for… the Florida Gators!

After three years airing Auburn football, the Fan today announced it is the flagship station for the Florida Gators, the No. 1 college football team in America.

With 790/The Zone airing Georgia Tech football and 750/WSB-AM doing the same with UGA, 680/The Fan has no local team to support. So why not take advantage of the huge influx of alums and fans from outside Atlanta?

“We’re not only carrying the reigning national champs but it’s also a direct plug in to some of the best football matchups in the country,” said the Fan VP David Dickey, who is a Gator alum.

Is this a smart pickup by 680/The Fan?

He noted that Florida will be playing Tennessee, South Carolina, Florida State and of course, UGA. So if you want to hear the game from two different perspectives on the radio this fall, this is your chance.

Dickey said the deal will go year by year but the station could go long term if it so chooses.

He feels Florida has a solid shot at winning again and bringing in plenty of listeners, too.

So this is the “huge” announcement they were talking about? Wow, how incredibly thrilling. These self hyped radio announcements are always so mundane.

I would much rather hear games involving a winning team than that War Eagle garbage. Auburn is not by any stretch entertaining … period.

This is great! I am a huge Gator Fan!

Channing Crowder is going to have like 200 tackles and I get to listen to them all on the 2nd most powerful AM signal in this great sports town.

Now if we could only get the Red Sox (love my Nomar at SS!) and my Steelers (The Bus will carry us to a ring this year!) on the station we would really be cooking. 680theignorantfairweatherfan baby!

As long as the games are played while the sun is up I will listen. At night that station’s signal is weak.

680 the Fan use to be such a good station. Can’t wait to see what Buck has to say. Is he a closet Gator fan? Question…don’t the FGators play many of their games at night? Doesn’t 680 (I use to be a fan) cut their broadcast power at sundown? So who is gonna be listening?

Anyone bashing this announcement must not spend any time in Atlanta or see that every third car you pass has a gator license plate or sticker. There are a lot of alumni in Atlanta.

Smart business move by Dickey—recognizing a Rolls Royce like UF, and locking in a broadcast deal, instead of the BS you usually hear on “sports radio.”

Please tell me this was not the big “secret” announcement. I am not sure if putz can be used as a plural or is it putzs. Either way they reside at 680 The Fan after this joke of supposed big news.

Okay, enough with the grammatical errors in your reports. You must be a University of Georgia “alum”. Learn to use a dictionary. ALUMS is not a word. The plural of alum is ALUMNI. Seriously, how can you not know that?

I have listened to these guys for close to a decade. After yesterday, no more. Absolut sellouts! 790 must be kickin their butt. and to hear Buck do promos for this, hurt my heart. There are WAYYYY more UGA fans than UF in Atlanta. That is just F’ Upped!

UF football has steadily gotten better in the last 20 years, and they have planned to keep getting better. With one of the largest alumni data bases in the world, and in the biggest SEC sports city, it’s a good move for fans and finances. A lot more UF vehicle tags and businesses in Georgia than most people realize…….. we stomped on the undefeated Buckeys Big-10(w/Heisman Smith), we stopped Oklahoma’s tornado offense Big-12(w/Heisman Bradford), now we want to smack South Cal surf-board boys around in their own back yard..!!! Hate-us all year, but give-us OUR DUE, when we were given our chances at the “big-dances”, for THE SEC we’ve come through>>>> if ya can’t handle THE SWAMP, turn the dial……

@former 680 listener: really? Are you really that mad? 680 has never carried any UGA games, they’re always on WSB! 680 has been carrying Auburn for a while now, were you mad about that? Did Buck or any of the hosts root for Auburn? I’m pretty sure they didn’t. Buck will always be a UGA guy! Where are you going to go, 790? They carry Tech, so your argument is terrible.

Hate to miss Leo and Buck, but 680 is dead to me now (sort of like their signal at night). 790 just picked up a lot of new listeners. I hope their are enough Gators in town to support the station because they just alienated a majority of the city.

Steve thanks for the – but where is your post talking about football – oh you said a football blog – I guess that makes your post legitimate. If you read the article it is also talking about “alums” and fans of which I am. “people like you are extremely annoying” seriously have you looked in the mirror lately. OH wait let me mention “football blog” again so it will be a legitimate post like yours and I can strive to be more like someone that ignores the fact that bad grammar in a paper is okay.

The only thing I like on 680 is Chuck and Chernoff, b/c it gives me a reprieve of having to listen to the Stews. Otherwise, I am a 790 Guy. Not sure this is a good move by 680. The more they promote the Gators, the more UGA fans will stay away. Getting the Braves was good for them though, wish it was 790.

I listen to both stations but mostly I think this says that the Dickey boys are very liquid in this economy. 680 has added Leo Mazzone, Chuck Oliver and the Braves in the past few months.

790 must be having a cow since the Stews are the only entity that brings them any attention now. I wonder what Steak will do now. I heard him doing updates this week- are they broke at 790? I saw that 680 beat them again in Rodney’s last ratings update.

I do wonder how dawg fans will feel about the team that OWNS them being on the radio in Atlanta-ouch. I’m sure they won’t flock to the flagship of the jackets. Gators have Tennessee, LSU, South Carolina, Florida State and UGA. You have to love that if you are a football fan.

Good move by 680 I will be in. Go Braves

How interesting. David Dickey is a Florida alum and now his radio station will broadcast Gator football. That’s all this state needs is more incentive for Florida fans to move here. Florida fans are like illegal immigrants. A fence should be built to keep them out. One can only hope. And no one gives a crap that 680 carried Auburn games because most of the Auburn fans couldn’t pick up the signal from their trailers or outhouses. My name Corrine Brown and I have degree in public speaking and master degree in communication and graduated from the University of Florida. I love Percy Harvey and Urban Meyers and Tim Tebows. Go Gator!

Getting the Braves will be good for them, but unfortunately that will be the only good programming they have. Chuck and Chernoff are ok, but ole Matt wears on you after a while. You are right, a lot of UGA fans listen to that show (I can almost attest that they are the majority of their listeners) and I could just hear the sounds of people turning the station after that announcement. Trust me, 790 will not be touched by this not more than 680 was when the Falcons, Hawks, Thrashers, and Tech partnered with The Zone. Both signals are weak between the hours of 7:30pm-6:30am which means the majority of the games for the two teams will not be heard outside of the perimeter.

Buck Belue and John Kincaid will not be happy with this–they both hate florida. Didn’t they have to approve it? Why can’t 680 broadcast UGA games instead of promoting the obnoxious florida gators around Atlanta? Georgia stations shouldn’t be broadcasting out of state teams!
