Tiny & Toya interviews about BET show

Atlanta-based BET’s “Tiny & Toya” has been an immediate hit for the network, drawing more than 3 million viewers each for the “sneak preview” after the BET Awards June 28 and the repeat two days later.

On Wednesday, I spoke with the lead characters, former Xscape star Tameka “Tiny” Cottle (right, in photo), T.I.’s fiance and Antonia “Toya” Carter, Lil Wayne’s ex.

They both came across as grounded women. And the first episode was not salacious, ostentatious or ridiculous. (Think “Real Housewives of Atlanta.”) Rather, it showed two women struggling with issues such as how to deal with a man going to jail (Tiny), how to handle a mom who has drug problems (Toya) and how to break out from the shadows of two famous stars (both).

How did you like the first episode of "Tiny & Toya"?

As co-executive producers, both women had veto power over footage they felt they didn’t want on the air.

“People were expecting a different show,” said Tiny, a College Park native. Something, she noted, “raunchy. But our show is geared to be more positive. We’re both women getting our careers on track, doing things we want to do and being mothers.”

Toya, who moved to Atlanta six years ago, said Tiny had an idea to do a sitcom called “Hot Mamas.” Then she wanted to do a talk show. But James DuBose, the executive producer, told them to start with a reality show so people get to know them before they attempt a talk show. (DuBose also produces “The Keyshia Cole Show” and its spinoff “Frankie & Neffe.”)

Neither rap stars T.I. nor Lil Wayne were too happy with the women doing a show, they both confirmed.

T.I. (or “Tip,” as many call him) is now in prison for weapons charges for a year. He and Tiny have been together for years but are not married. T.I., she said, didn’t want Tiny to work and protested the reality show. In the end, she said, “he kind of gave in.”

What was T.I.’s reaction when he saw it last week while in prison? “For the most part,” Tiny said, “he thought it was done tastefully. He might say something here and there to show he didn’t want me to do it. But overall, he thought it was a great show.”

Tiny is not singing anymore but is managing a couple of girl groups, including OMG Girls featuring her daughter Zonnique Pullins, Toya’s daughter (Reginae) and two nieces. “An album demands too much attention and time,” she said.

Tiny is also happy that her parents were so well received. “They say my mom [Diane] seems so warm, so sweet,” she said. “She’s a celebrity already. She’s going to need security in a minute!” And she is grappling with her dad Charles Pope, a former member of the Tams, suffering from Alzheimer’s. The good thing for now, she said, is he’s still singing.

Toya said the one thing she didn’t like watching the show was how strong her New Orleans accent came across. “People think it’s cute but I don’t,” she said. Still, she has no plans to get rid of it.

The pair met a few years back through mutual friends and bonded immediately. “We both love to shop,” said Toya, who hits Lenox and Phipps regularly. “I have a problem with it. I’m a shopaholic. I buy stuff I never even wear.”

Tiny is still close to a fellow Xscape member Kandi Burruss, who just joined the second season of “The Real Housewives of Atlanta,” out July 30 on Bravo. “I’m very excited to see her do her thing,” Tiny said. “She’s been very supportive of me and Toya. I’m going to return the favor… I gotta go and see what my girl’s going to do.”

In future episodes, taped just in the past few weeks, Tiny said she’ll be working on her nail shop (still not opened) and her pain as T.I. goes to prison. Will he show up on the program? She won’t say, which means he probably will. Toya, who has plans for a book and a clothing line for little girls, said future episodes will show her continuing to grapple with life without Lil Wayne.

The show’s second episode was pre-empted for Michael Jackson memorial service coverage this past Tuesday. There are seven more to air this month and next.

I was pleasantly surprised with the show. I think the girls did a wonderful job. We all have to remember that these ladies are young but full of love. I would like to see Tiny change her image a little. She a pretty lady, but it would be to her advantage to take “speaking lessons” so that she will not appear to be ghetto-mouthed. Toya speaks well, she just has a strong accent (Lousiana). She would make a great model, or do good in commercials, I think. The show is more than what any of us thought it would be. It didnt show them flashing money, or living above their means. It simply showed to African-American women dealing with real issues in a real life in a real world. “You GO Girls”

I really enjoyed the show. Toya don’t be ashamed of your N. O. accent!! It is cute. Represent! Shout out to all my peops from the N. O. especially the 9th ward. LOL.
Tiny and her family dealing with her dad’s Alzheimer’s in such a loving and caring way is good to see, I don’t think I’ve ever seen this situation dealt with in any other reality show. I’m looking forward to the rest of the episodes.

Banner idea, why don’t they both get real jobs and learn a skill because in less than 18years they will have no more child support. I sick of celebrity’s and so called celebrity’s thinking some wants to know what they do all day. I couldn’t watch but 10mins before i turned. this is a hot mess.

This was just another example of needing something to put on the air. I think it’s a good concept, however they should take grammar classes and try to speak better. I know we all come from different backgrounds but what is “haar” it’s her. I like to see my sistas in a positive light and that’s good, but please don’t put us to shame.

I didn’t even watch the show myself, but Nia and Nita, if the two of you are gonna dog Tiny out about the way she speaks, I feel the need to give you both a grammar lesson. Nita, should be celebrities, instead of celebrity’s. Nia, it’s waste, not waist.

That is the most ghetto show on earth; it’s a shame that Tiny and Tonya thought enough of their selves to think that people want to see that sh@#$!!!! The show is not tasteful at all, it may be that in Georgia but on the other side of the Kentucky line everyone feels that both women are country, illeterate, and ghetto. Tiny needs speech class and so do Tonya, country as hell!!!! TI should be upset that his little funny looking baby mama is embarrassing him like that. Tonya to put your crack head mother out like that is a real shame, honey we see crack heads all the time in the hood , they have a lot of them on Cleveland ave, ask your girl that’s where she came from.
I hope that the network take that sorry a@# show of the air it’s a waste of time!!!!!

This show is a actually a step above what I thought it would be. Wit that being said, it pains me to hear just how inarticulate Tiny is. It would be great to see her on the show, actually attacking her real problems….namely her inability to speak proper English. She is obviously a girl with some talent. She’s a successful songwriter and mother, however, she needs to use this opportunity to blosssom as woman and learn to communicate effectively. People are watching…..the good an the bad !!

Tiny should have taken an English class to prepare for the show. The girl is not smarting than a 5th grader. I think Toya could have found someone else to do the show with. The show is embarrassing to young African-American females who aspire to make in the movies or music industries.

I read that no one speaks about celebrity “white women” having children in or out wedlock on televison. I personally do speak out about “women” having children out wedlock, and it being glorified on television. However, it really hurts to see women of my culture grab to that option to have a family, without the bonds of marriage. It’s not a good look. If you are living as married. Guess what? Why not get married???

I wonder what Bill Cosby thinks about this show ?
Since the 90’s,the out of wedlock birth rate in black america has skyrocketed.
The producers of this show have the dysfunctional viewer ( most are born to single mothers’,but not all) completely figured out,he he !
Birds of the same feather always flock together.
I wonder how many blacks who graduated fro Ivy league schools ( Harvard,Princeton,Yale) watch this show ? He he !

Young, ignorant Black Children have got to see more positive role models out there. The problem is, they don’t want to watch it, because it makes them to not be “down” or “cool”. First of all, how a person looks is in the eyes of the beholder. Everybody is beautiful until they open their mouth and make you think otherwise. There is some truth in many of your comments, there will be a demographic that digs it, one that hates it, one that could care less and those like me who haven’t seen enough to judge. I think of all the comments I’ve read, Shawn says it best, use this as an opportunity to improve yourselves and let others learn from your struggles. If your not going to do that, people will get their laughs.

I think people do not understand what they are talking about here. Tiny was with T.I. when he was nothing first of all so for anyone to say he needs to leave her is crazy. Second, Tiny voice has not always been like that as well as her mouth there is a medical problem there I think looking at it some thing has happened between her having her last baby look at the picture on her wall and you can see the difference in her mouth automatically. Okay Toya I think she is who she is and to tell someone their accent is ghetto is crazy. She is from N.O. one of the only few cities that were able to hold on to African heritage even in their language. And the show I think is great because they are dealing with real issues and not the men who father their children and glorfiying that life. Those women might not have an college degree but they are very smart and intelligent women. Let me tell you I have degrees and that does not make me any better than the next person just because I have a title before my name. And, it is true although this might not be a Black thing it only gets discuss this way with Black people, so lets not deny the facts put before us okay. Thanks and sometimes before you form an opinion please do a little history search and the pieces to the puzzle will be filled in.

People please get over yourselves this is not the 50’s women do not have to be married to have children. First off this is reality for most people hell maybe 80% since it is reality lets not cover it up with some foolishness like marriages are perfect. No, let it be known that they do not want the same thing for their kids and their kids friends. These women are doing what they have to do for their families just like many other people are doing I am pretty sure. You people are funny people degrading their own race and other people who think their lives are prefect take a step back and look at yourself before judging someone else.

There are so many other Tiny’s and Toya’s out there. Regardless of what opinions people may have; these girls are doing something positive. If they were out smoking crack or doing Lord knows what ever they would really give something for us audience to boast about. Its amazing how people can feed off of a negative impact more so than a positive one. I highly doubt either one of these females give a roots ass about the negative things that people especially our own have to say. They are taking it all in; good and bad straight to the BANK!! Okay, yes I am White. I have to say I watched the show by flipping channels, I was floored by the fact that Toya was so pretty but was covered in Tattoo’s.(Ghetto)I felt so embarrassed for her that her family lives that way. Hood. I can’t imagine having success and not trying to get my family out of that life. I do realize not everyone wants out. Tiny, man I felt so bad for her. I see her mom has that southern voice but it has a ghetto edge too. But they have such big hearts and they obviously have a loving family. Everyone needs that. But the piercings and the grammar drove me nuts to watch. She isn’t ugly, she’s not beautiful, but she could look so much better. But, looks aren’t everything.
I realize that everyone has a different life and we all have to live it. We shouldn’t judge but it is on
national tv for all to see. Having been married to a black man for fifteen years I know you can’t make your family be something they aren’t if they don’t see it for themselves. My husband grew up in the projects, mom had seven kids from 4 different men, partied and treated her kids horrible. But lucky for me, he wanted a better life. He graduated from LSU, works two jobs, has rental property and is a good man who doesn’t drink, smoke or club. People its our life, we live it as we see fit. So overall the show is being real. Tiny isn’t trying to take classes to make herself what she’s not, just being herself, which looks like aside from the grammar is a good and kind woman doing her thing.
Toya and Tiny seem to have a something real, friendship, uncut as it may be.

I’m sorry. This show represents all the Hood Rats in the world. Do we put alot of pressure on young women to represent african american women in a positive light– yes maybe. But is that too much to ask? Apparently so. Ok, I realize that they are trying to make a name for themselves and show their struggles in raising a family, being involved with men in the industry, real life family issues, blah blah blah… but this is FOOLISHNESS! No the accents are NOT CUTE! It makes these women sound less than intelligent. Big ups to Beyonce for toning hers down. I don’t see this as anything but a means or ploy to expose I mean– market themselves by staging a platform to, show off their cars, their ability to shop for nonsense or club “VIP” at the atlanta hotspots, and gaining propoganda for their upcoming project to become a little more profitable (clothing line, books, hair salon) all while putting “real life issues” in the mix.
