TV coverage of the Michael Jackson memorial service Tuesday
You might be sick of all the Michael Jackson coverage but if you still want to wish him goodbye and didn’t get one of those lottery tickets, there are plenty of options to watch the memorial service on TV.
The major cable networks — HLN, MSNBC, CNN and Fox News — will be in Los Angeles at the Staples Center at 1 p.m. EST. E! Entertainment network, TV Guide Channel and TV One will cover it, too. And so will local broadcast affiliates for CBS (WGCL-TV), NBC (WXIA-TV) and ABC (WSB-TV) using national feeds.
This means WXIA’s “Days of Our Lives” will be pre-empted, followed by part of a repeat of “Martha.”
Steve Riley said WSB-TV will air the ABC national feed from 1 to 3 p.m. and the two soaps “All My Children” and “One Life to Live” will simply skip a day.
WAGA-TV won’t be taking the national Fox feed. Instead, it will keep airing its array of judge shows during the Michael Jackson funeral service.
WGCL has the most confusing changes. “The Price is Right” moves to 3 p.m. from 11 a.m. while “The Young and the Restless” moves to 11 a.m. “As the World Turns” is off for the day while “The Bold and the Beautiful” airs at 12:30 p.m. after the news at noon. The MJ special will air from 1 p.m. til 2:30 p.m. and “Guiding Light” will air in progress until 3 p.m. Got that? If you have a DVR, this might be the time to use it, assuming the cable/satellite folks update their schedules in time.
Over in radio land, V-103 will air excerpts but won’t go fully live. Praise, Majic and Hot will likely just have the jocks reference the funeral, no more than that. Majic continues to play plenty of MJ cuts. I haven’t been able to reach anybody at WAOK-AM or WSB-AM to see what they are doing.
Here’s what I got from Jay Dixon of Kiss 104.1:
Kiss will do a Michael Jackson music tribute tomorrow from 1p-3p – playing his greatest hits starting in 1970 thru the 00’s and invite Michael Jackson fans to call in and share their memories and stories about him. Kiss 104 DJ Cynthia Young will host the program and our news anchor Veronica Waters will also provide highlights from his public memorial in Los Angeles tomorrow.

I’m still saddened that more than likely the greatest entertainer of all time had to pass early and under such grim circumstances. I also find it rather amusing that so many people would apparently allow a “child molester” to offer some money, regardless of the amount, to be suffice enough to allow the person who has “traumatized” their child to walk. I know it’s off topic but I can’t find an email address for you Rodney. A few months back the holdings of Southern Broadcasting in Rome, GA, changed ownership to a group called Rome Radio Partners LLC. The stations included are South 107 (WTSH FM Rockmart), WGJK – AM Rome, WRGA – AM Rome, Q102 – WQTU Rome, and WSRM – FM Coosa. Shortly after the change in ownership WSRM’s frequency and tower location changed from 95.3 FM to 93.5 FM. Higher power and higher elevation mean that the 95.3 signal reaches down into the northern suburbs more than before. WSRM has been simulcasting WRGA for about 5 years now. However, they have begun running announcements that as of 6 AM 7/9/09, WRGA’s signal will no longer be heard on WSRM 95.3, and that at noon on that date something new and exciting is coming to WSRM.
The speculation of course is…what??

I’ve pretty much hated pop music over the last 35 years because it was banal, and since the 80s rendered obnoxious with synthesizers and the irritating “vocoders.” Jackson took it to another level and volumized the banality. Sure “Thriller” sold a jillion copies. That doesn’t mean I’m supposed to like it. That doesn’t mean I’m supposed to have bought it.
MJ had become irrelevant over the last several years, and here are millions of fans and a slobbering media circuit all but canonizing him. Paraphrasing Lennon from 1966, Michael Jackson is bigger than Christ. And that’s scary.

I have never been a Michael Jackson fan. But I like some of his music. But after watching his daughter, Paris, get up on stage and call him Daddy, I have a new perspective of Michael Jackson. I don’t look at him now as an entertainer but that of Father. He was Father to those 3 kids. The only parent they evwer knew and will ever know. They loved him. No matter what kind of pervert ir wacko he may be, he was Daddy to those kids. What heart break they must be experiencing. I know their pain as I lost my loving Dad too. He was weird and he was strange but he was “Daddy”. Get over it people. Let the man rest in peace. Let his children retain the loving memories that they have of their Daddy. Name one other celebrity that has had a bigger impact globally than Michael Jackson over the last 30+ years, and by impact I mean given to charitable organizations, helped to shape and change race relations, bridge the gap between different cultures etc….The answer is no one, not Oprah, Brangelina, Elton John, Tom Cruise, Madonna, Princess Diana RIP, Paul McCartney, even Muhammad Ali. Before we could all enjoy and cheer for Tiger, MJ or watch Oprah, Michael Jackson was the first breakout star that not only crossed racial barriers but cultural barriers. It’s unfortunate what Michael had to deal with in the media. I mostly blame his upbringing, having a terrible father that verbally and physically abused him, but we all know how the media works, they can make a villain out of Gandhi or Mother Teresa. But if any of you were ever fortunate to have met or known Michael I think you would have a much better opinion of him.
