My colleague Jeffry Scott wrote a story about how Atlanta-based the Weather Channel has dropped smooth jazz as the background music during its “On the 8s” local weather report for rock songs by the Rolling Stones and the Allman Brothers.
“I think we’ve been doing an injustice to our viewers playing, for the lack of a better word, elevator music on the segments for all these years,” Geoffrey Darby, the cable network’s new executive vice president of programming, said Thursday.
Smooth jazz has been taking it in the ‘nads lately. All across the country, smooth jazz stations have died. Locally, Smooth Jazz 107.5 disappeared in favor of a straight R&B station, now known as Majic 107.5. The format, which is this generation’s “beautiful music,” has been skewing too old and losing audience and favor.

It is ashame all of the great music oldies, smooth jazz never seem to find a market, yet us baby boomers love it. Thank God the oldies are back for now.

I dropped The Weather Channel when they dropped Kristina Abernathy. TWC really lost their credibility when they joined with Al Gore and his global warming hoax, which incidentally has made him very wealthy.

I’m not sure that replacing Smooth Jazz with Rock is the answer, but smooth jazz reminds me of having my teeth drilled. If you’re going to play jazz, play real jazz. Coltrane is jazz…Kenny G is not.

It bothers me that smooth jazz doesn’t seem to be a supportable genre on the radio. I really believe that more people like smooth jazz than they realize…something tells me that the hundreds of people who show up weekly for Wednesday Winddown (sometimes religiously) were not core listeners of WJZZ.

What a complete joke. I’m so sick of hearing rock these days…the jazz on TWC was the best part about the network personally. I’ve complained to TWC several times about this but usually get excuses replied back. Anyways, this rock isn’t going to last long..TWC has done it before and it failed.

I too don’t understand as to how rock music would have a permanent home on TWC. It’s too distracting.
Here’s a petition to bring back jazz. Please sign it to show your support of the jazz music that it made synonymouse with TWC: http://www.thepetitionsite.com/petition/900952504
