A “dated” but clever themed lunch on Dave FM

Mara Davis on Dave FM, for years, has been doing great theme lunches but today is especially inventive.

When Kodak announced a few days ago it was no longer going to manufacture Kodachrome (made famous to a later generation by that song by Paul Simon), Davis decided to play songs which mention outdated items. Here’s the hour today:

The Police – “When the World is Running Down” Outdated reference: VCR

Train – “Drops of Jupiter” Outdated reference: Tao-bo

Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers – “Jammin’ Me” Outdated reference: Joe Piscopo

Primitive Radio Gods – “Standing Outside a Broken Phone Booth With Money In My Hand” Outdated reference: in the title!

Bryan Adams - “Summer of ‘69″ Outdated reference: “five-and-dime”

Sheryl Crow – “All I Wanna Do” Outdated reference: Datsuns

The Buggles – “Video Killed the Radio Star” Outdated reference: VTR (an old term for what is known now as VCR)

Derek & The Dominoes – “Bell Bottom Blues” Outdated reference: bell bottoms

Everclear – “AM Radio” Outdated reference: AM radio, when it played music

Paul Simon – “Kodachrome” outdated reference: Kodachrome

The cheese song was OutKast’s “Hey Ya” with the outdated reference to shaking those Polaroids.

Found this ad for Polaroid from the 80s starring Hugh Laurie!

I think that’s the wrong Youtube video. Lots of Asian people, but no Hugh Laurie, and it definitely is post-80’s.

I love Mara…her show is great. Probably the only station where the DJ can still play what she wants…even if it’s only for an hour.

For Music on AM, genius, get yourself a Radio that tunes above 1600. WMLB/1690 has the best music on the commercial ATL dial, AM OR FM!

awesome-insomnia brings me to a place on the net where i can complain about mara.

first, if you’ve never heard a good music station like chicago’s wxrt this may not make sense to you.

now, in no particular order;

1) please shut up and play music mara
2) don’t bring mom into th studio (see #1)
3) don’t talk over the music-that is insane (yeah, dave fm where music matters and we talk over the songs)
4) assume we’ve read drudge, tmz, and all the rest so please see #1
5) radio free lunch???? ya know what would be cool and make sense? no commercials for lunch. then it would be commercial free lunch. its not radio free-what does that even mean? dumbest. show. name. ever.
6) see #1
7) please don’t shill. its so annoying. let rush, and hannity and glenn beck shill for companies and restaurants and cell phones. you need money so bad get a second job. do you realize a) how unprofessional the ads sound and b) how pathetic you sound.
8) see #1
9) get a mission statement-some stratgy. bad economy-people stopping sirius-get listeners back, probably by shutting up and playing music.
10) from you i want the time, maybe the weather and a heads up if war or swine flu has broken out. other than that play music.
11) see #1

Dear What_what,
You probably lay awake at night and can’t’ sleep because it sounds like you have some major issues.

Now, in no particular order;
1) STFU
2) Love the mom
3) If love Chi’s wzrt listen to them, and see #1
4) I’m pretty sure TMZ is not my first stop for news in the morning. (you’re a ding dong so see # 1)
5) You don’t seem to care for the MD, yet you know everything that she does, says and music she plays. Hmmm. Interesting.
6) See # 1
7) I don’t know if you have ever really listened to radio, but I am pretty sure that EVERY radio station has their DJ’s do endorsements, even wxrt. You should probably just a) put your Jewel cassette tape back in, and b)write in your journal about how your life sucks. C) see #1
8) Learn how to count
9) I believe the strategy is a good theme for the lunch time……and I am pretty sure that is what prompted this particular blog post on ajc.com.
10) …..if war just happens to break out I’m sure you will find out….
11) See #1

Never heard of “Tao-bo.” And why is “Hey Ya” the “cheese” song? Does that mean it’s cheesy? Moreso than the Buggles? Really?

Ohhhh… you mean TAE Bo. Like it says in the graphic–right next to the misspelled word.

darlene-you seem to have issues also!

and for your #7, yeah, that’s true. which is why i finally voted with my hand and removed dave fm from my radio.

i think what you are missing from my post (aside from completely not understanding satire)-do you need the wiki link for that? Is the unused potential. When it started I listened a lot-I thought it was the best station in town. And then it got to the point where I would call them up and say “shut up and play music”-why does one have to tell a radio station that. And then they had the promo, “Dave FM, where music matters.” as if it didn’t before? and talking over songs proves this point how? I don’t wish them ill will, and I was expressing an opinion based partly on facts, true facts. You think Mara is great. good for you. i think she’s a bad dj, and not suited for a music program. but then i want my music radio station to play music. guess you don’t.

anyway, don’t bother replying-not going to read this blog anymore. i hope one day you will get a clue and realize you don’t have to accept mediocrity. good luck with that.
