5/23: WGCL-TV anchor Bill Gaines abruptly quits

According to newsblues.com, a subscription-based Web site that follows broadcast news, WGCL-TV’s Bill Gaines abruptly quit the TV station Wednesday, no explanation.

Gaines, who came from Raleigh, N.C., was at the CBS affiliate for two and a half years anchoring the 4, 6 and 11 p.m. shows. The 11 p.m. news show, co-hosted with Stephany Fisher, was competitive with WAGA and WXIA, thanks partly to a strong 10 p.m. CBS lineup. Most other dayparts, though, WGCL’s news shows are usually in fourth.

Gaines is no longer on the WGCL Web site.

The number I have for Gaines no longer works but I’ll post something if I can track him down. News director Steve Schwaid texted me tonight, writing, “he retired.”

Here was his bio on the WGCL page:

Bill Gaines co-anchors CBS Atlanta News at 4, 6 and 11 p.m. weekday newscasts.
Gaines joined CBS Atlanta from Raleigh, North Carolina where he anchored the evening news for six years at WNCN-TV. He is an award winning journalist, with three Emmy nominations and five-first place Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) Awards. He was also voted “Best News Anchor in the Triangle” three times by Spectator Magazine and “Best News Anchor 2006″ by Cary Magazine.
However, he is no stranger to Georgia. His first television job was at WMAZ-TV in Macon. Gaines also worked for WWJ-TV in Detroit, MI., WITI-TV in Milwaukee, WI. and KGTV in San Diego, CA. An interesting fact viewers may not know about Gaines is that he served in the United States Army and after serving his country, served the public as a police officer in Oakland, CA.
Gaines has an extensive background with charity work and is heavily involved in the Make-A-Wish Foundation. In 2002, he founded the “Bill Gaines Make-A-Wish Golf Classic,” a fundraiser which continues to raise money to this day. He is currently a board member for the March of Dimes Foundation, the Spencer Foundation for Spinal Cord Research and Development at Duke University and is very involved with the Leukemia Lymphoma and American Diabetes Associations.
Bill is married to his soul mate Shannon and they have two beautiful children. When Gaines isn’t anchoring the news or volunteering, you can often catch him riding his Harley or playing golf.

Just wish monica pearson would retire and I can go back to watching ch2. that woman is a cheerleader for the NAACP and is so one sided, in my opinion, on how she reports things.
yes-most of these weather people read the weather from the national weather service. but then again, if they did not make weather exciting, who would watch it. Dagmar and her dancing mid caps?
