Turner Entertainment prez Steve Koonin told the L.A. Times Wednesday that Atlanta-based TBS might consider saving “My Name is Earl,” an NBC show that was axed this week after four seasons due to sinking ratings.
“We like the show very much; we’d definitely look,” Koonin told [the L.A. Times blog] Company Town at the Turner upfront in New York.
The blog entry noted that the show is owned by 20th Century Fox, which also oversees the Fox TV network. But Fox probably wouldn’t be interested given the show’s recent performance. It was averaging about 5 million viewers toward the end of its run, not terribly good even for fourth-place NBC, much less Fox.
Although TBS airs “My Name is Earl” repeats Monday nights and generates a fair amount of cash flow for Turner, cable networks tend to be much tighter in the wallet than broadcast TV when it comes to paying production companies. Could they possibly meet the budgets of a show like “Earl”?
“Earl” reruns get respectable ratings, relatively speaking, on Monday nights on TBS. Last week, two episodes at 10 p.m. May 11 averaged 1.3 million viewers (down from 1.8 million for “Family Guy” at 9:30 p.m.) “Seinfeld” at 11 got 1.1 mllion viewers.
Last year, ABC picked up “Scrubs” from NBC and just this morning, CBS grabbed “Medium” from NBC.
But there aren’t a huge number of examples of first-run broadcast shows moving to cable or somewhere else other than another broadcast network. And I’m not saying just repeats but actual new shows. There are four I can think of off the top of my head: “Law & Order: CI” from NBC to USA Network (with NBC airing repeats.). There’s “Friday Night Lights,” which now airs first on DirectTV before NBC airs the repeats. Comedy Central revived the animated show “Futurama.” And ESPN picked up NBC’s failed reality show “The Contender.”
Top 10 shows in primetime in Atlanta the week of May 11, according to Nielsen
1. American Idol results, Fox, 5/13, 589,000
2. American Idol performance, Fox 5/12, 504,000 (that’s really low for Atlanta. “Biggest Loser” definitely cut in on the audience.)
3. Grey’s Anatomy, ABC, 5/14, 442,000
4. House, Fox, 5/11, 360,000
5. Desperate Housewives, ABC, 5/17, 347,000
6. Fringe, Fox, 5/12 326,000
7. 24, Fox, 5/11 324,000
8. Mentalist, CBS, 5/12, 313,000
9. NBA playoffs, TNT 5/17, 295,000
10. Dancing With the Stars performance, ABC, 5/11, 290,000 (way down from the norm)
The “Lost” finale didn’t do all that well either, finishing at 194,000, ranked 28 for the week.
Last night, the “Dancing With the Stars” finale drew 393,000 viewers while the final “Idol” performance show drew 618,000 (which is typical).

i think turner will bring ‘earl’ back. they have the money to do it, and turner seems to be going the way of original series, eg. ‘house of payne’ and ‘meet the browns’.

Wouldn’t exactly call Comedy Central broadcasting the straight to DVD movies as reviving the animated show “Futurama”. I know there were rumors of new episodes but nothing made for TV has come out. Have you heard something new?

To save money, TBS could rename the show My Name Is Merle and change the premise to Merle looking for his Karmann Ghia.

Admittedly quirky, but this show is a real little gem.
- It’s strangely got that “Arrested Development” vibe in that it has this understated humor without the obvious punchlines. It apparently appeals to a similiar small but devoted fanbase. Nor does it go where you’d expect it a la, the CBS comedies.
- It also truly loved the faithful followers in the way it respects the cannon storylines and rewards those viewers with subtle references that new viewers would not see. Like Randy’s love for “Time after Time” after a break up or how Earl’s eyes are always closed in pictures.
- The casual mention and insertion of pop culture reaches almost “Simpsons” heights but doesn’t ape them as badly other sitcom’s. I especially love the subtle and not so subtle parodies such as “Rudy” or “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.”
- The show’s choice and use of the songs, especially the older ones, to underscore the themes and storylines. Other shows like “Cold Case” uses old songs to evoke a time period but Earl does them one better by evoke emotions.
- The almost meta-sitcom humor in the way it references TWOP, other shows, Tim Stack’s career and even it’s own story lines such as no one wanting to see Earl in a coma.
- Similiar to the “Simpsons” and to a degree “Married with Children,” there’s an underlying and often unexpected sweetness that often redeems the characters such as Joy’s choices as a good mother or how people are able to forgive others.
- Their use of guest stars. Some shows seem to have guest stars just to have big names do the same thing (”30 Rock” and to some extent, “SNL”). I love how they have well known actors take truly unexpected roles and apparently relish going against their typecasting. Often they go so into the character that they’re not immediately recognizable.
Roseanne Barr as a supersweet nun? JD Qualls as a white Darnell? Mindy Sterling as a sweet and doting mother to Seth Green? Danny Glover as a super slick CIA agent? Craig T Nelson as the idiotic husband of the governor and prison warden? Bernie Kopell’s cameo? This season especially had two outstanding performances by Betty White and Geraldo Rivera which franky, were Emmy-worthy.

Another example is Monk went to USA after being canceled.
I used to love NBC. But now it’s given up on it’s shows. It moves them around so much and even though Earl has remained on Thursdays, it’s often gone weeks between episodes as back to back episodes of 30 Rock and Kath and Kim have aired. If not for my DVR, I wouldn’t have been able to keep up with it.
The show is still brilliant, I love the guest stars and the supporting cast and the “inside” jokes. If the network knew the ratings were sinking and was going to cancel, then it should’ve at least been able to have a final proper finale, if not a season to wrap up like Scrubs. Instead, it left with a cliffhanger! I hope Fox picks it up, or that it at least has a final straight to DVD wrap.

I couldn’t believe NBC cancelled “Earl.” To many people, it’s one of those shows who’s quality is hidden, as was the case with “Arrested Development.” It’s very well developed, and unfortunately, under-appreciated.
