5/16: TV show renewals: “Dollhouse,” “Scrubs,” “Castle, “Better Off Ted”

News is leaking about various shows getting the thumbs up for the fall.

ABC’s new crime show “Castle” will be back, along with quirky comedy “Better Off Ted.” ABC is also giving “Scrubs” a ninth season with Sarah Chalke and Zach Braff agreeing to be in six episodes each. Smart move? Not really. The show is well past due and should be retired.

And Joss Whedon fans are thrilled to hear Fox’s “Dollhouse” will come back, according to Nikki’s Deadline Hollywood. Despite modest ratings, DVR viewing is solid and the execs liked the second half of the season.

Ausiello at ew.com noted that CBS’s “Cold Case” is coming back but the fate of “Without a Trace” is not as good. He also wrote that ABC’s “The Unusuals” is a goner, as is Fox’s “Sarah Connor Chronicles.” Neither of those are surprises.

Fox is also going to air back-to-back seasons of “So You Think You Can Dance,” its most successful summer series in recent years. It will air a sixth season this fall right after the fifth season this summer. This sounds like a dopey idea to me but they are coming to Atlanta June 1 for auditions at Woodruff Arts Center.

More will come next week.

Rodney,

I’ve seen advertisements for wes sarginson at cbs 46. What’s the story?

He’s doing a one-off news report based on a documentary he’s doing about World War II. But he might do some more work down the road for them.

What made “Scrubs” good was the interaction between the cast. I just can’t see it being good without regular Zach Braff and Donald Faison interaction. They make the show.

DollHouse is a great show with a great premise. I know I TiVo it b/c I am busy on Friday nights. Maybe they should consider moving it?

SCRUBS does need to go off air. Let it go out on a high note.

As a huge fan of Scrubs, I have to agree, it should ride off into the sunset. Season 7 was horrible, season 8 was better but it’s time to let it go and “pull the plug”

ABC just doesn’t know when to let go of its shows (well some of them, others they don’t hang on to for long enough) and “Scrubs” is a good example. “Scrubs” was a good show in its day, but ABC which aired a “series finale” just a couple of weeks ago should have let it just go away this season.

Ugh, please make it stop. Dollhouse was the absolute worse Joss Whedon production ever! They (Fox) couldn’t give Firefly a chance, but this dreck gets a second season!?! Fox must be scraping the barrel.
Scrubs wore out its welcome years ago.

i’m a fan of “scrubs” and i think it should go. the “series finale” they showed summed everything up just fine and the show just won’t work without its main protagonist.

“dollhouse” is awesome, i’m glad it got another chance, as well as “better off ted” and “castle”; both are great shows and out of the norm. would’ve been nice if abc had kept “pushing dasies”, since they like quirky shows, but oh well. i just wish they’d stop pushing stupid reality shows and stick to good writing again

Dollhouse definitely improved as the season wore on. I almost stopped watching after the first couple episodes but I’m glad I stuck with it. Any news on Reaper? That’s a very underrated show IMO which I’ve heard is currently on life (or death) support.

Reaper is a goner from what I hear.

Saw that Terminator is canceled. Just want to thank our local fox affiliate for ruining the last episode of the show by running “breaking weather reports” for the first half of the show and joining in progress.

Steph,
NBC has just announced “Chuck” will be back for a 13 episode 3rd season.

Rodney, do you know if sites like Hulu factor in to decisions at all? Dollhouse, etc are popular views on that site, are there ways to factor that into their ratings?

I will be really, really disappointed with Fox if they cancel “Terminator” yet keep that dreck “Dollhouse.” You must be kidding. “Terminator” is not just a bunch of Eliza Dushku gawking – it actually has multiple, complex story lines.

Agree, ThrasherFan. I was highly irritated when I fired up the DVR to watch the season (series?) finale and the first half is gone due to there being a thunderstorm in Sandy Springs….

Is it just me or does it semm that cable networks like USA, SciFi, and Comedy Central seem to be coming up with the best new original programs. Most of the programming on the “big 4″ have devolved into a follow-the-leader mentality on what worked last year on the other networks. If ABC would just come up with more original ideas like “Ugly Betty” rather than retreads from other networks they might not need to hang on to an NBC castoff like “Scrubs” which was once outstanding but now, since the great writing has left, is pretty much unwatchable.

I agree with Gary. Shows like Battlestar Gallactica and Rescue Me are consistently of better quality than the average crap you find on the networks. All those network resources but hardly any executives with the courage or the vision to do something original and financially sustainable.

Is it possible to literally overdose on yet another cop show? I know it’s an easy format for action but come on! Can we please see something other than CSI or NYPD spin offs or generic copies?

I’m sorry to see that The Unusuals is going off. I really enjoyed that show. The characters were quirky and the stories were quirky too. Not the usual run of the mill formula cop show stuff (it’s called the unusuals, go figure)

NBC’s “Life” is dead. Also heard “Samantha Who” is a goner.

As much as I’d love to say Scrubs would’ve been served well with this year being the finale, I can’t complain about a season with less from JD and Blonde Doctor compared to most of the rest of what’s out there. SCRUBS RENEWAL FIVE!
