4/29: Morning Mash with Al Roker coming to The Weather Channel, Top Chef visit to Atlanta, TNT casting all

Al Roker, the “Today” show meteorologist, really likes to work. So he’s going to get up even earlier and co-host a show for The Weather Channel from 6 to 7 a.m. with Stephanie Abrams. The show title: “Wake Up With Al.”

Abrams will host from Atlanta while Roker, of course, will remain in New York.

From the press release, including a quote from Lisa Gersh, interim CEO for the Atlanta-based channel:

“Simply put – Al Roker is synonymous with weather. He has an energy and a style that jumps off the screen, and we already know that people want to wake up with him in the morning,” said Gersh. “We have spent months coming up with the right way to integrate Al into The Weather Channel programming, and I think, alongside Stephanie, we’ve come up with the perfect formula with this announcement.”

Do you think Al Roker is a good addition to the Weather Channel?

Wake Up With Al will explore all aspects of the day’s weather, combining Roker’s warm style with the accuracy, dependability and expertise of The Weather Channel. He will appear both in the studio, interacting with guests and viewers, and in the field, reporting on the most compelling weather stories of the day.

It will premiere this summer. Last week, what is airing at the 6 a.m. hour now, “First Outlook,” drew 267,000 to 371,000 viewers. That’s on the high end for the network when there are no major weather issues going on.

- Do you want a cooking demonstration from “Top Chef” runner up Richard Blais? He will be doing it free Monday May 4 in a customized traveling 18-wheeler semi-truck with fellow season four Nikki Cascone.

They will be at Perimeter Mall in the valet parking area and main street restaurant entrance. with three show times: 11:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m.; 12:30 p.m.–1:30 p.m.; and 2:00 p.m.–3:00 p.m. Last year, they did a similar demonstration at Piedmont Park. It was cozy and plenty of fun. There will be 60 seats under a special canopy and more space to watch from the outside. More details at

NBC is going to be the final nail in the coffin for TWC. They were great when they were just running forecasts 24/7, then they moved to broadcasting original programming (’It Could Happen Tomorrow’, ‘Storm Stories’, etc.). Now they’re going to make their channel exactly what CNN and Fox News are : infotainment.

Yeah, I agree NBC is going to be the death-knell for TWC. People, myself included, watch TWC at 6:00 for weather – not entertainment.
