“Celebrity Apprentice” went off the rails last week when Donald Trump inexplicably did not fire Clint Black for his, um, self-congratulatory video. Black put the rather silly, rather unfunny video together with virtually no imput from his teammates and was rejected by the All detergent execs for its suggestive nature.
What do you think really happened? I suspect the producers needed to get rid of two boring personalities (sorry, T-Boz) and keep the Joan Rivers-Clint Black clashing dynamic going. Total silliness, totally arbitrary.
This time around, the Powers That Be focused Sunday’s episode on the two Rivers (the most quotable pair on the show) and poker player Annie Duke (upper left). And since the first challenge was kinda boring (and eliminated a staid Brian McKnight), the second hour honed in on another challenge, a fashion show/fundraiser featuring Ivanka Trump’s jewelry.
(UGA grad and Heisman Trophy winner Herschel Walker was not a major factor during these two hours. He did get into one minor tiff with Black and Walker sniped, “When Clint gets mad, he runs off like a little girl.” Good line, Herschel!)
The real intrigue started during the boardroom of the first challenge, in which the two teams created a point-of-sale display for an identity theft program Lifelock.
Both teams did a good job but golfer Natalie Gulbis’ team, with Joan Rivers, Herschel Walker and Clint Black, was more creative. (McKnight’s team lacked creativity.)
Surprisingly, Black and Rivers got along during the first challenge after clashing last week. “He’s terrific, Rivers said, of Black. “He’s stubborn as hell.”
Joan thought Annie Duke was going to diss Playboy Playmate Brande Roderick in the boardroom for being lame and not so smart but instead Duke let her daughter Melissa hang to dry. Joan deemed the poker player “two faced.” So — this is… surprising?
During the fashion show challenge, Duke suddenly became buddy buddy with Roderick, who was energized by this task and was even going to be a model during the show. Melissa was jealous. Really jealous. She bitched and moaned to the cameras constantly about it. Very entertaining. Very catty.
My favorite strategy came from golfer Natalie Gulbis, who thought it’d be great to get one of Duke’s poker rivals to show up at the fashion show and buy jewelry for the Joan Rivers team. Joan was impressed that Natalie was willing to go in the “gutter” with her.
We’ll see the fashion show next week and find out who raises the most money. (Herschel said he had at least $40,000 lined up from his VIP buds.)
The two hours ended with a very very modest “reveal.” Last year’s winner Piers Morgan will help out Trump to see the two teams, noting that Jesse James hasn’t raised any money and Melissa is a bit of a drama queen and isn’t well liked.
