3/18: Afternoon Mash with Rob Wilson post WAOK-AM, new mid-day host soon on Majic 107.5

I’ve been working on other stuff today so here I am, so late that it’s now afternoon mash time:

-I spoke with Rob Wilson, who was cut earlier this week after more than seven years doing a financial show for WAOK-AM. He chalked up his departure (and that of short-timer Rick Joyner) purely “to the bottom line.”

“This station is not productive,” he said. “Revenue is down.”

He’s disappointed he can no longer educate the African-American community on financial literacy, especially during this time of economic crisis. But he’s not harboring bitterness. “I had seven fortunate years,” he said. “And it was more of a blessing for me than they realized.” He said he will continue to do workshops and financial literacy conferences.

I’m still awaiting a callback from his boss Rick Caffey to confirm that Warren Ballentine and Al Sharpton are replacing him and Joyner.

-Carol Blackmon is currently subbing in mid-days on the new Majic 107.5. Tim Davies, her boss, said she is doing that temporarily but she’s in the running for the gig. (The former V-103 morning host was hired a few months ago to do weekends and part-time fill in.) He said a new jock will be named hopefully within the next two weeks.

-Here are the top 5 songs at Dave FM this past week, courtesy of Yes.com

1- “You Found Me” – The Fray
2- “Human” – The Killers
3- “Lovers in Japan” – Coldplay
4- “Working On a Dream” – Bruce Springsteen
5- “Cath…” – Death Cab For Cutie

Top 5 at 97.1/The River

1- “You’re In My Heart” Rod Stewart
2- “Hotel California” The Eagles
3- “Crazy On You” Heart
4- “Take Me Home Tonight” Eddie Money
5- “Don’t Bring Me Down” ELO

Top 5 at Rock 100.5

1- “It’s Not My Time” 3 Doors Down
2- “Psycho” Puddle of Mudd
3- “Walk This Way” Aerosmith
4- “Pride and Joy” Stevie Ray Vaughn and Double Trouble
5- “Rise Above This’ Seether

Top 5 at Project 9-6-1

1- “Second Chance” Shindeown
2- “Do What You Do” Mudvayne
3- “Bad Girlfriend” Theory of a Deadman
4- “You’re Gonna Go Far, Kid” The Offspring
5- “I Don’t Care” Apocalyptica

-Piers Morgan says “Celebrity Apprentice” paid a modest $16,000 to be on the show for three weeks, according to his latest book. Sadly, many of these celebs could use the money!

-Boring Belinda Carlisle got cut from “Dancing With the Stars.” No big loss there. Steve Wozniak will have to suffer another week but he’s oddly mesmerizing to watch. I’m sure the Mac fans kept him in.

Wow! This is big news – Rob Wilson cut from WAOK? I thought he would he would be there until the signal went off the airwaves! I’m really surprised the station axed him (and Mr. Joyner – what? We can’t have TWO air jocks with the same last name airing in the same market?!) WAOK still needs a signal boost in the mornings while we’re stuck in morning rush hour.

WAOK needs to move to an FM signal and have informative shows on for the black community. I liked Rob Wilson because his show talked about what sooo many African-Americans seem to have a problem with…money. Please do something CBS radio….

I think Portia Fox would do wonderful in the middays on 107.5. The mid days on every other station sucks!!

Anyone who listened to Rob and applied the info to their daily lives should hate to have him off the air. I guess gossip and all that Chris Brown Rihanna talk brings in more $. Not really a reason to listen to WAOK now, since I can hear useless chatter clearer on FM. I guess Jihad can call in all day now.

Love The Carol Blackman Show. So good to have her back so fresh and so clean.

I thought WAOK was making changes for the better when they dumped Atlanta’s Best News where you would hear Jean’s or Rick’s cell phones go off while they were talking or when they would break into side conversations about the headlines rather than report the news.

I actually liked Rick Joyner’s show. It needed work but had potential. Rick was trying to go the Lorraine Jocque-White show (every call is a great call and so on). Rob’s show was great, I listened to it all the time and he gave great advice and told you what you needed to hear about your spending and financial habits.

The guy might have been a financial whiz but he was a disaster on the radio. I don’t know who has worse grammar, Wilson or Boortz.

WAOK yon need to drop the (serving the community )line now..No reason to listen to you anymore. Losing Shelley was bad, losing Ron is a diaster.

Well, well, well…. WAOK is not OK…The perspectives brought to the marketplace by Rob Wilson & Rick Joyner & Shelley Wynter WERE & still ARE, what is needed to allow a contrast in a “me too” marketplace. Whether you liked them or not, their information was/is some of the best in the local & national marketplace. Rob definitely tried to give you more than just ” file bankruptcy & your problems will be gone” radio. His classes & guests were timely & informative. I didn’t agree with everything any of them said, but, they always gave me more perspectives than I started with. The business network only needed the community to grasp it & use it. I know of several people on the network who made money from the paltry cost to join. I also listened to a few complain because they were to lazy to call in once a week @ a given time

When all is said & done WAOK will become “W – All – Onesided – K” & will have asterisks in the Arbitron Avg. Quarter Hour Share rankers for PPM™ Markets. (i.e. ratings)while other upstart stations will have positive numbers…. Maybe a VIACOM owned billboard or two on the downtown connector during rush hour could remind people that there is a WAOK to tune in to… because word of mouth just ain’t gonna get the job done. V103 has the “Urban” ear, so most of us will happily hum, thump, & jump to the next beat while our intellect will go unchallenged,& go vote only when TOLD by some (w)rapper to do so.

I’m sadden that aok has turned out the lights on a Mecca of info to the black community by letting Rob and Shelley go. It’s just another example of when Mr. Charlie thinks we’re getting too much info they find a way to shut it down. The other personalities are ok but Rob and Shelley are truly the best that aok has ever had in their lineup and if the staff at aok doesn’t realize that you are lost…

WAOK is missing a great opportunity. Rob Wilson’s show was a great value to the Atlanta Ga. listen audience. I am missing the education.

No one knows when their supervior will tell them that they have to go. Even in this ruff time; even church have to make some decisions to stay afloat. Fixtures don’t always stay in place. Rob was a great source to all of us who listen to him. Money, it drives even the devil away because the devil is a threat! Money cause people who are in position to hurt their fellow man and even cause him to do whatever he can to keep himself from being hurt. People who have lost their jobs and even those who told them they are laid off….is not honest; they was actually fired for nothing. It is sad and it should not be that easy to just let people go. If they are let go; let them go for a good cause and not because you have to save money for a city that you took money from it from the beginning. Do fire people because you feel you have to; do whatever you can to keep them or you will find yourself being fired!

Late to the party. I thought Rob was on vacation or something. After reading this, WAOK is off for me. First Shelley, now Rob! We need information as a community, not hipness. Tried listening to Derick’s show and just don’t like it. Goodbye WAOK, why you are trying to be like V103?
