3/7: EW reports fifth “Real Housewife of Atlanta” is Kandi Burruss of group Xscape

The fifth housewife was bound to leak out since the show started taping two weeks ago: Entertainment Weekly has found out that Kandi Burruss, a former singer-songwriter for the 90s R&B group Xscape, will take over for DeShawn Snow.

Burruss is undeniably the most notable member from Xscape. Since the group parted ways in the late ’90s, she had a somewhat successful solo singing career (her biggest hit: “Don’t Think I’m Not”) but has seen ever greater successes with songwriting. Along with [Tameka] Cottle (who’s engaged to rap superstar T.I.), she wrote TLC’s 1999 smash hit “No Scrubs.” Burruss has also penned jams for Mariah Carey, Destiny’s Child, Boyz II Men, Alicia Keys, and Faith Evans. The singer-songwriter has a daughter, 6-year-old Riley, from a previous relationship, and a boyfriend.

Not surprising they would go for someone in the music field since Atlanta is such a mecca for R&B and hip hop. Xscape in the 1990s had three albums (all which went platinum) and five top 10 hits, the biggest being “Just Kickin’ It” in 1993, which peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Here’s the link to the “Just Kickin’ It” video.

Are you happy that the producers replaced DeShawn Snow with Kandi Burruss. Is this a step up?

More recently, she was featured on a top 10 hit “U and Dat” led by E-40 and also featuring T-Pain in 2006.

Here’s her MySpace page.

On the site, she says the songs she has written or cowritten on albums that have sold 56 million copies.

On the songwriter database with ASCAP, Burruss has 118 songs (though some are repeated).

Bravo sent out a press release at 11:37 a.m. Monday, which notes that Burress has a live-in fiance and a six-year-old daughter. It notes: “Burress juggles her busy life as a single mom and hard working career woman, but also finds time to let loose on the Atlanta social scene, stepping out with members of the music industry’s elite.”

This is SOOOOOOOOO Boring

Okay, this is bad. I’ve seen people complain about writer Ho’s grammar, but today sure is an off day for him! Here, he says that she “has EVER greater successes with songwriting.” Regarding the hard-on-the-eyes Hughley, he says the show “AS not cancelled.”

Since these contributions aren’t real news, do they not go by an editor? Can Ho not proofread his work himself?

Well, I guess that’s what I get for reading! If I don’t want to get angered by work that nobody bothers to check, I guess I should stick with the news part of the NEWSpaper! My bad!

And why is he so obsessed with the Real Housewives? Why does he write about these losers nonstop? Why does the NEWSpaper allow him to?

How much is he getting paid to essentially only write about these “housewives?” The newspaper is in dire financial trouble….and they’re paying someone to throw together grammatically scrambled “stories” about these broke, ghetto housewives? Gee, when the layoffs come to AJC, I wonder who’s first to go?

If I were Ho, I’d be proofreading my work, and asking for some news assignments! In these hard times, I do NOT appreciate having these ugly “housewives” thrown upon me when I’m trying to find the news. Ugly!

As for the comment made by Mr. or Ms. “BORING” (self-named), if you don’t want to read about the Real Housewives, then don’t! There are parts of the newspaper that I don’t read — like the sports section — that I personally have no interest in. But I certainly wouldn’t insult the reporter that’s paid to cover the subject, nor the readers that want the information. Not everyone has the same interests or tastes as you, Boring, and that’s okay, I know it’s unbelievable to you but there are tons of people (not just those in Atlanta) that love the show and the women on it, if there wasn’t an interest I’d imagine AJC would not cover it.

And as for Rodney’s blog writing and style, try reading some of his print stories if that fits your tastes better. Blog writing is by nature more off the cuff, conversational and “raw” vs. a traditional print piece, if blogging was the same as traditional print reporting than it would be redundant. There are people like myself that gather information online and mostly through blog format, it’s a matter of taste and preference.

Rodney Ho was voted the BEST Features Columnist in 2008 by Atlanta Magazine Readers, and he was also named as a notable by The Sunday Paper. Rodney was one of the first reporters nationally to cover American Idol, and his AI blog is still one of the top AI blogs going. He’s done a tremendous job of increasing readership for AJC so, sorry BORING, on behalf of the readers that love and support Rodney, I think you’ll be seeing his name around for a long time.

This comment is for Mark, the racist, your kind is extinct, have you seen all of the women of your color who are birthing the same kids that you are referring to with the derogatory and insulting name, one of these black men must have stolen your girl and you are bitter with the entire race, I wonder how many of these kids you have. Haven’t you heard your leader is black.

The women of Atlanta are truly pathetic and very poor representatives for this program. They are straight out of the trailer park/projects trying to act like “high society”. Their life’s are falling apart before our eyes. Please BRAVO go to another city, Atlanta is not correct for this program.

To Biggest Mike:

Whether you like the show or not, you have no right to insult these people in such a way. Unless you really know them (and their backgrounds), you cannot insinuate that they are from trailer parks or projects. Think about this… If your life were aired on national television would everyone see a perfect individual? Since you’re not Jesus, I’ll answer for you…NO! So why don’t you and all the others that are obviously jealous just shut up and turn your T.V.s to other channels and read other stories in the newspapers.

My only comment/question about Kandi coming on the show is: “Is she a housewife?” If not, doesn’t her appearance take away from the title of the show? Just a thought.

So, Kandi is “the most notable member from Xscape”.

Isn’t that kind of like being the world’s tallest midget?

At the end of the day, you’re still a munchkin!

P.S. I thought Obama was half-white. Shouldn’t his white family – you know, the folks who actually raised him – get a little credit?

TOO FUNNY ALL OF YOU. These are CHICKENHEADS and Classy Educated Blacks know this. Whites are having fun with the blacks thinking these women are something to aspire to be. A person of class would never want to be on a “REALITY” show that is based on causing conflict and trying to make you show your A$$. Candy is how it is spelled not Kandi, Brandi, Windi and if you end your name with and I then we know what you are about before you open your mouth. I would rather see the REAL WHITE TEEN STONED BRATS of Atlanta because being Stoned could be an excuse for thrie stupidity, but these Chickenheads have no excuse for being stupid.

I like the show! I not only watch the Real Housewife’s of ATL, but also the Real housewife’s of Orange county, and the Real Housewife’s of New York however, the only problem I have is to be a housewife you have to be married, on all three shows you have some that are not married. What is up with that. A competing network should start a show called real Married Housewife’s.

This is for Lashaun’s comment…the white girl Kim wasn’t married either. So why does Kandi have to be married to be on the show. It’s entertainment and that’s all. And I agree with everyone that stated you can watch the show or turn the channel!

Rodney Ho is one of the hardest-working journalist’s out there. No one else at the paper has as much chutzpah and passion for their beat — and this comes from someone who onced worked at the AJC. There is an audience for everything from business and finance to breast feeding and TV drama. Rodney has found his niche and delivers in a compelling way.

I enjoy his post — each and every last one of them — and other reporters near and far could learn from this guy! Go, Rodney!!!

About the topic, I actually had a chance to speak to Kandi a couple of times and she was always gratious and sweet. Her smile is infectious. She reminds me of a thinner version of DeShawn, so I’m wondering if she’s really going to speak her mind or add to the drama quotient.

Guess we’ll see …

What most of the general population don’t know is that the black women of Housewifes are not representative of all of us. I am sure the same is said about how white people feel about those that they are not always proud of.
As for striving to be like them, I don’t think you have many trying to be that way. This is just pure entertainment and folks need to take it that way.
Don’t lump all black people into one category, just as we don’t lump all white people in one category. We are ashamed of our trailer park cousins just like you all.
As for Rodney Ho, he is a wonderful journalist and writes other things then just entertainment blogs. And if you are new to blogs, grammer isn’t the most important thing! If you are offended, don’t read it!

Andie, I totally agree. I would like for the producers of this show to just stick to the title “Real Houswives”…..can’t they find any REAL Housewives in ATL? or perhaps..just change the name of the show! I guess the Real Housewives in Atlanta wouldn’t be caught on a show like this. Too the ladies on the show..do your thing, guess we all gotta make $$ in this tough economy somehow.

Okay so I watched the Housewives of Orange County and New York and I do not see any difference between what goes on there and what happens in Atlanta. Oh wait there is one difference —– most Atlanta particpants are Black!!! There are women on the other shows that have scandalous and triffling behavior just as some of the women on the Atlanta show. However, because the Atlanta women are black they are called classless and ghetto. Well what about the white women on the other shows—are they trailer trash then? I get so sick and tired of Black women being scrutinized so intensely and criticized for the same things white women are doing (without criticism). And then we get accused of bringing out the race card—– Heck yeah as long as you keep playing with these same deck of cards THE RACE CARD IS GOOD. I do not care for NeNE on Housewives of Atlanta because she is too loud….I do not care for Vicki on Real Housewives of Orange County for the same reason……..You see how that works???

DW…
…….The reverse of your argument holds true as well….in most neighborhoods in the ATL if Obama were not president folks would not be so quick to claim his blackness…he would just be another sell-out or insert any other insult that is part of everyday language in many black households when referencing whether or not someone is “black enough” for you…now which idiots make you sick?????

Elle, I hate to break it to you dear, but white women get scrutinized too. I have actually watched both the RH of Orange Co. and RH of ATL. There is trash on both of the casts, but that is why it’s so fun to watch! It doesn’t matter if they are black or white, what is so comical about the show is that, even though most of these women are loaded, they have no class. Theay are all catty and tasteless, but that’s what makes for good entertainment. I’ve also read blogs on Bravo’s site for the RH of Orange Co. and they got called as many dirty things as those on the RH of ATL. I don’t think it has anything to do with race, I think it is how each person is percieved on these shows, and most exibited no class, and that my friend, is because just because you have money does not mean you have class.

I personally think Rodney Ho is a great editor. He is human, so what if he makes a few mistakes! Rodney, keep doing what you do! Miss Boring, who are you? Do you think Rodney really thinks of you when he’s writing? You obviously was interested in the article since you clicked on it. Ha Ha Ha! You should have nothing to say.

I was a fan of the first season and always thought Deshawn didn’t need the show to promote her charity. She’s a very level headed person who has a lot going for her and definitely do not need to publicize it on television. I think she will continue to prosper and touch lives of many young ladies.

Hopefully Kandi will bring some sanity to the cast and not too much drama. I guess I will tune in to see.

What is a housewife anyway? Someone married to a house? Nobody is a housewife anymore. I don’t consider myself a “housewife” that’s an old-fashioned word – pretty insulting to women — it makes them sound like chattel. Why is it still so “ok” to demean women?

But I do love NeNe. She is hands-down my favorite. She is a riot! She is totally her own self – she says what she thinks and doesn’t pull punches. If Kandy isn’t real – NeNe will take her out for sure… NeNe is no “housewife”.

BTW – for anyone confused about how Obama got in the discussion – Coco started it – right up there at the top of the comments – with this pitiful comment, “Haven’t you heard your leader is black.”

And – why the hating on Rodney Ho? He’s doing his job – did you know Kandy with a K was the new housewife before he reported it? And you jumped in on the blog – so guess what – Ho’s doing a great job if he can generate this much debate.

Why is everything black or white? It’s a reality show for goodness sake. As the other’s are saying, if you don’t like it, don’t watch but for you to actually say what you don’t like about the people in the show or the reporter covering the show, that let’s us know #1-you watch the show and #2-you’re reading Rodney’s articles. Ironic huh?

Just understand that people have feelings and those same people read these blogs. I was always taught if you didn’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all. And as for Real Housewives, I love the show…ALL of them…it’s not a black/white thing…it’s a reality thing!

To comment on the REAL topic here, I think it was a mistake for Bravo to remove Deshaun. Ms. Snow was the balance on the show. You already have 4 trifling, drama-filled women, why add a fifth? I hope Kandi brings the Class that will surely be missing without Deshaun. JMO!

Rodney ~ Thank you for sharing information that people who follow RH of ATL wanted to know!!! (I put this update on my FB page.) You are right…this is extremely popular on several sites which is why EW reported on it! I think Kandi would be a good edition to the show. Since Atlanta has a huge influence on music, it would be interesting to get a glimpse into the life of a person in the industry. For all the extra comments today, it is really sad how several “INSIGNIFICANT” rabbit trails developed. I ditto several thoughts from Higherstandard. Bottom line, Rodney ~ I like your work and keep mentioning MTO. (I like that site also.) I can’t wait to watch how Kandi will influence the show.

I like Kandi as an artist. Hopefully, she won’t be as outlandish as some of the other cast members. We’ll see what happens. Some idiots take this show way too seriously. It’s entertainment. If you don’t like it, don’t watch it. Why were you reading this article anyway?
For those of you making racist comments, grow up. You must really need some attention and have self-esteem issues. Mommy didn’t love you? Get over it or seek help.

All have GREAT acheivements not for themselves but for the community. None would be caught dead on this show. And why can’t Obama’s white side, that raised him, be appreciated. Hello, white side did the work. You don’t think they let just anybody into an Ivy League school. Like he said when he first became president, “pull your pants up”.
