Your daily jolt: Nathan Deal wants to stay out of gun debate
Gov. Nathan Deal’s sit-down with Lori Geary of Channel 2 Action News on Wednesday was primarily intended to spread the news that the state’s economic woes had eased enough to boost HOPE scholarships by 3 percent and add 10 days to the pre-kindergarten schedule.
But Geary was also able to sneak in a question about gun legislation – which has become a hot topic for governor’s elsewhere. Said Deal:
”It is a time that is fraught with emotions on both sides of the issue. I’ve heard of proposed legislation, but none of that is part of my agenda.”
Don’t consider that declaration of neutrality to be a green light for the handful of bills already filed in the House, in anticipation of the new session of the Legislature that begins Monday. Several have been filed by incoming freshman Charles Gregory, R-Kennesaw, who has proposed removing state bans on (permitted) concealed weapons in churches and on public university campuses.
The governor’s statement could very well be a declaration that he wants no part of that debate. Not now.

Vice President Joe Biden’s announcement that the Obama administration might tackle some aspects of gun violence through executive action generated a wall of outrage among Second Amendment enthusiasts on Wednesday. But my blogging colleague Jamie Dupree of WSB Radio fame notes a pair of precedents:
The first time it happened was in 1989, after a mass school shooting Stockton, California, as President George H.W. Bush used a 1968 gun control law to limit the importation of foreign firearms – his executive order banned the shipment of certain assault weapons, unless they were used for sporting purposes.
In 1998, President Bill Clinton expanded on the Bush Administration move by banning the import of almost five dozen different assault weapons that had been modified to get through that “sporting purposes” exemption.

The aforementioned Charles Gregory, R-Kennesaw, who will be sworn in as a member of the House, is quickly earning a reputation as a conservative of a different sort – i.e., a full-fledged apostle of Rand Paul.
In town meetings and other such gatherings, Gregory has already theorized that Georgia should issue its own currency. We suggest Zell Miller’s face on the $20 bill.
On Wednesday, Gregory a) decried the practice of House Republican leaders protecting incumbents with campaign cash; and b) proposed a conservative loophole for those struggling with the concept of gay marriage. From Jon Gillooly and the Marietta Daily Journal:
“You know, marriage is a religious institution,” Gregory said. “It belongs in the church, and it should be between you and your God. It’s not the domain of the government. I don’t think anybody should be asking government permission to get married. So it takes gay marriage out of the whole equation. It’s not an issue anymore if it’s not a government thing. It’s a church thing. If your church is in favor of gay marriage, they would marry you. If your church is not, they won’t marry gay people. It would be up to the church. It has nothing to do with the government in my mind. It should not have to do with the government.”
This isn’t a brand-new thought. I heard state Rep. Bobby Franklin say almost exactly the same thing shortly before his death.

Check out this curious quote from U.S. Saxby Chambliss that my AJC colleague Kyle Wingfield tacked onto the end of his column today:

Potential strategies assigned to President Barack Obama, who wants to avoid a showdown with Republicans over an increase in the federal debt ceiling, include a trillion-dollar platinum coin and the 14th Amendment, which states that “the validity of the public debt of the United States … shall not be questioned.”
U.S. Sen. Johnny Isakson doesn’t think either one is an option. From the Athens Banner-Herald:
“I don’t believe the Constitution allows either of those things to happen,” Isakson said during a legislative preview with the Athens and Classic City Rotary Clubs and the Athens Area Chamber of Commerce. “And I don’t think we ever want to get into a situation where one individual in this country unilaterally has the ability to determine how much we’re going to owe.

A Fulton County judge has rejected Secretary of State Brian Kemp’s attempt to settle a border dispute between Bibb and Monroe counties. From Mike Stucka and the Macon Telegraph:
Superior Court Judge Kelly Lee ordered Kemp to use the controversial 2009 survey by Terry Scarborough, which Kemp has rejected multiple times. Monroe County first appealed Kemp’s rejection to Kemp himself, filed and lost in Fulton County courts, then filed again in Fulton County to win Wednesday’s victory.
John Ricketson, a Monroe County resident, attended the hearing and said Lee’s order shocked attorneys for the state, leaving them “stammering like you had taken a baseball bat and slapped them upside the head. It was just that, really. Everybody in the court was just going, ‘Unbelievable.’”

The Washington Post today highlights a $1 million donation given by Sherry Huff of Rossville, Ga., to a super PAC that opposed President Barack Obama’s re-election. Huff lives in a $50,000 house:
“I didn’t like the way the election was looking,” Huff wrote in an e-mail message to The Washington Post. “Desperate times call for desperate measures.”
CREW, however, believes the source of the money is more likely to have been Huff’s employer, businessman Carey V. Brown, who built a fortune with Internet payday loans he routed through Bermuda to avoid lending laws. Brown recently pledged $1 billion to a Christian charity and has a history of political contributions to Republicans.

What they really see is an armed revolution coming and they don’t want patriots who are sick of this crap to be armed. Robert, proposing that all gun owners have their addresses published is by no means civil. Do not act like it is. It is none of your business what guns I have. They have never been used in the commission of a crime while I have owned them and there is nothing else for you to worry about with them.

BTW,Time magazine ran an interesting article on mass shootings. According to their research, 380 people have died in mass shooting events WORLDWIDE in the past 40 years. Vice President Joe Biden said “the group has heard repeatedly about the need to strengthen background checks to keep guns out of the hands of criminals and the mentally ill. He is is strong favor of a national registry for all current and new gun owners. He said proposals would go beyond closing a loophole that exempts some private firearms sales, such as at gun shows, from background checks.”
“There is an emerging set of recommendations — not coming from me but coming from the groups we’ve met,” Biden said. “There is a surprising, so far, a surprising recurrence of suggestions that we have universal background checks.”
These recommendations were not only about “closing the gun show loophole,” he said, “but total universal background checks, including private sales.” He said the focus would be on how to “strengthen those background checks.”
Biden also mentioned strengthening the ability of federal agencies to conduct research about gun violence. He drew a comparison between current limits on federal gathering of data about gun violence and 1970s-era restrictions on federal research into the causes of traffic fatalities. Biden stressed a need for the government to collect information about “what kind of weapons are used most to kill people” and “what kind of weapons are trafficked weapons.”
Biden’s comments came an hour before he was scheduled to meet with a senior representative of the NRA, the powerful gun rights group that has long opposed any additional restrictions on gun ownership or ammunition purchases.

So you want to be civil after you’ve equated gun owners to criminals on the lowest rungs of human existence? Are you kidding me? Let me be perfectly clear why there shouldn’t be a registry. This nation was built on the premise of PERSONAL FREEDOM and our court system works on the premise of INNOCENT until proven guilty. Forcing law-abiding citizens to sign a registry is no different than the Nazis establishing registries for German citizens. We have the right to be LEFT ALONE and for government to butt out of our personal lives UNLESS we have done something that harms another individual citizen. I really don’t care if the government gets its feelings hurt. Who is the government to tell us how to run our own lives when time-and-time again it has proven to be incapable of running itself without waste, corruption, or the violation of personal rights?
How is it not abundantly clear to you gun control freaks that CRIMINALS do not behave like law-abiding citizens? Do you think MS-13 and the Crips go to their neighborhood Wal-Mart to buy their pieces? Do you really think gang members won’t SELL guns to other people? How naiive are you to think that the government can actually enforce any law that is easily broken?

If people want to list the names and addresses for gun owners and permit carriers, I’m fine with that.
Except, I want all the names listed for other interest groups listed as well.
If you don’t own a gun, your name and address should be listed. Why should you fear listing your information and that you are a gun free zone, right? Or does that make you a target for unwanted attention?
I also want to have a list of the people in my neighborhood who are on WIC, foodstamps, and if anyone is getting government assistance in any form and fashion. SS, disability.. you name it. Living off my dime, I’d like to be able to atleast be proud of that nice new car in the driveway, and the fat little bellies of your refund checks running around the streets.
I want a list of single mothers, divorcee’s and gay’s. I also want drug tests every month. Who trusts walking your dog around if there’s a wild crackhead next door!
I wanna know where the fatties live too. If you are a woman over 150 #’s, I wanna know that too. You could crush someone.
While we’re at it, why not just make a list for every neighborhood, and list everyones business in there? Would that make it civil and people feel better? Once we get over the warm fuzzy group hug.
Listing sex offenders doesn’t next to nothing. Do you think a large portion of people actively search and move away from them? Do you think that it literally stops people from non consensual sex acts because there is a “dreaded list”?
Pretty crazy idea huh.. Doesn’t fix a damn thing in the end, but bother people and invade personal space.
Trust me, if I had a neighbor that didn’t like the idea of me having guns, I wouldn’t give a hoot, they aren’t in their house. I have no need to protect anyone but myself and my family.

They are among the most powerful of all political lobbies and area easily powerful enough to drag this debate out for the next 4 years until Obama is a lame duck. They have a bottomless vault of cash in the billions, millions of supporters, and the best lawyers money can buy. Even the federal government will not be able to bully the NRA financially. Chambliss is, as the saying goes, keeping his options open. Depending on what the polls show, he will decide whether to run. That means he will not run if there is a strong opponent. And he will have a strong opponent in his own primary if there is bad blood over the upcoming fiscal showdowns in Congress. Besides, Saxby has been there and done that and would prefer the leasure life of a retired statesman to the possible humiliation of being kicked out by the voters of his own party. Kind of ironic considering how he became Senator in the first place and because he would probably win reelection if he made it past his primary.

Lets get the govt out of marriage. This newly elected person better take a high govt class. The big companies hate gay marriage, not due to the gay thing, but due to benifits!!! Each state has its own marriage laws. States can not recognize a marriage/civil union or domestic partnership if it comes comes from a different state. So, GA could just say, “no one is married”. That way Adam and Steve can live in peace and I can go to Taco mac on ladies night and truthfully say ” i am single”.

Robert, your comments seem to be somewhat irrational at worst, and void of any logic, reason, or knowledge of the subject matter at best. Of course, the anti-Second Amendment crowd always first attacks and blames law abiding gun owners after tragic shootings like Newtown have occurred, but I sense something a little out of whack with your arguments. Have you ever had any mental health issues? Have any of your neighbors or friends ever noticed or commented upon your irrational and uninformed thought process? I’m not sure how I would feel about someone like you living in my neighborhood. I would certainly like to know if someone as irrational and uninformed about the Second Amendment as you appear to be is living in my neighborhood. You mentioned something about publishing a lists with the names and addresses of law abiding gun owners and also of the mentally unbalanced, irrational, disturbed, etc. Would you be willing to voluntarily submit your name and address as a public service, as a public safety gesture as someone who may have mental health issues? Do you have friends and relatives who share your somewhat awkward and illogical views about the Second Amendment? We would like to know where they are too. Thanks in advance for your cooperation.

Anyone with any felony criminal record found in possession of any firearm should be executed then & there. (Felons should also say goodbye to voting forever.) Parents who buy their nutso kids guns later used to mow down classmates should be tried for murder. I have one word for those who think that arming the average citizen via more liberal gun laws would lead to a safer society: Zimmerman. As a volunteer neighborhood security patrol, George Zimmerman was not trained as a professional law enforcement officer would have been. The mechanics and safety aspects of gun usage are important. But more important is training in how to handle the emotion and stress of encountering a stranger at night, one who appears threatening. George Zimmerman was scared. Trayvon Martin, in Zimmerman’s view, acted as a threat. Martin is now dead. I have no doubt that Zimmerman strongly regrets his actions. Performing background checks and providing instruction in safe gun handling are required elements of a rational gun licensing program. But law-enforcement-level training in unexpected situational behavior is just as critical if increased gun ownership is expected to increase the safety of the public. Without that training, the opposite will be true, with many more “accidental” shootings of people who were in the wrong place at the wrong time and faced a scared citizen with a legal weapon and some “official” domain.

Here’s some more fuel for the fire on the pro-gun side. How many of you have heard about what happened in San Antonio on December 16th? Probably not many right? The national media conveniently ignored this story:
A guy in S.A. went into a restaurant and shot his ex-girlfriend and turned to run into the movie theater next door to do a copy-cat job of the Aurora shootings. So what happened? A by-stander saw what happened, pulled his own gun and shot the guy DEAD before he could even get into the theatre. The city is awarding him a medal. True story. If you want a reference, here you go:

We publish names and addresses of child molestors, rapist and other people who use “fear” as their weapon of choice. It is time for all registered gun owners to be listed in a national register just like we do to protect our children from predators.
So you believe that the mother who shot the home invader day before yesterday in Gwinnett , and possibly saved the lives of herself and her children, is the equivalent of a rapist or child molester because she used a gun to protect herself/family? The hilarious part to me is that in other states, the “gun legislation” on the docket is to consider banning military-style assault weapons, body armor, etc. but here in Georgia, the bill is to allow *more* guns in more places. Robert, you and most of the journalists who write or rant about guns are clueless about gun laws in Georgia.
In Georgia, anyone with a gun can openly carry it, on their person, with no license required. Must be 21 to buy the handgun you have, due to federal law, or 18 to buy a “long” gun–those are rifles and shotguns. You can buy all the ammo of any type you want. Thousand round cases bought over the interweb are your best value, and UPS delivers them with labels on the box that say “ORM-D”.
Any Georgian not court-ruled to be mentally defective–whether you are actually crazy or not–can buy guns in any number and size at gun stores, if they can pass a phone-in background check. Anyone else can buy them at gun shows, with no background check and none of that awful state sales tax or record keeping.
Anyone in Georgia that can qualify to buy a gun (not a verified crazy or a convicted felon–you can still be an accused felon, not convicted, yet) can get a concealed carry permit (CCW). This means you can carry your gun(s) anywhere on your person or vehicle you can–visible or hidden.
No training or proof of proficiency or knowledge or the law or even moral rectitude is required for a CCW, or any judgment.
WARNING: If you plan to hunt with a gun, you must have a license and complete a state-mandated hunter safety education class, and pass a test on hunting laws, and buy a state license. You are limited to FIVE or fewer rounds in your auto-rifle if big game hunting, and your magazine must be sized for only five or fewer, not the 100-round drum you can buy anywhere when they get back in stock.
FURTHER: If you plan to hunt waterfowl, you can’t kill with lead shotshells, to slow the rampant epidemic of lead poisoning, which leads to violent behavior and loss of impulse control. Never midn that cleaning guns and breathing aerosoloized lead from shooting is an exposure pathway for lead poisoning.
You are also limited to THREE rounds in your shotgun when hunting.
Predators, criminals, and others with guns have no limit in the number and type of cartridges they use, whether it’s victimes, assailants or school children.
The gun business is a minimally regulated business in Georgia. We don’t need a “permit” to be gun crazy. Our gun laws are crazy.

Deal is just being a seasoned politician. Why take a stand on any issue that is guaranteed to inflame half of the voters? Better to say nothing or see which way the wind is blowing when your reelection campaign starts.

People do not have to like guns or own one, but they should be grateful that there are many concealed carry permit holders – all around them – who may chose to protect them if trouble arises.
Air Marshals… When you get on a plane, you may think for a moment that there may be a concealed carry Air Marshal on the plane with you in case the bad guys are on board too.
You think about it for a just a moment, then sit down and enjoy your flight without worry. We are very comforted by having Air Marshals on planes.
Why not do that for our kids in school? Concealed carry administrators, principals, teachers, coaches etc. The NRA and Front Sight training center have each offered to train 3 people from every school for free. FrontSight trains 600 people every 4 days and they can do it! That is a solution that will work.

I definitely had some teachers that were psycho–especially the coaches (must be those hits in football, in the news AGAIN). Will the gun toting teachers be screened for future crazy?
Why isn’t anyone talking about the the Brian Nichols Fulton County Courthouse massacre—the shooter simply snatched the gun from the sheriff’s level 1 not-secure holster and had a field day shooting…killing…wait till the young turk football players tuffs take the gun(s) away from the teachers and shoot up the school[mates].

Why do you believe that a teacher having a gun will either lead to the teacher becoming a mass murderer or a student not only stealing the gun from the teacher but also becoming a mass murderer?
What is keeping a teacher or a student from just taking a gun to school right now?
Its funny how no one is concerned about the mental health of teachers until guns come up in conversation. Even when people ask to have a police officer in school, others seem to think even police will become mass murdering child killers all of a sudden.

Gover Deal got into office thru the tea party and supporters of the second amendment,He won’t stay in office by upsetting the gun owners of Georgia,not with Obama in office also. Like it or not he has to be pro second amendment.
