Atlanta pastor withdraws from Obama inauguration ceremony

From the Associated Press:

The evangelical pastor chosen to give the benediction at President Barack Obama’s inauguration withdrew from the ceremony Thursday after remarks he made two decades ago condemning the gay rights movement surfaced.

The Rev. Louie Giglio of Passion City Church in Atlanta said in a statement he withdrew because it was likely that the “prayer I would offer will be dwarfed by those seeking to make their agenda the focal point of the inauguration.”

Addie Whisenant, a spokeswoman for the Presidential Inaugural Committee, said the committee had chosen Giglio because of his work to end human trafficking.

“We were not aware of Pastor Giglio’s past comments at the time of his selection and they don’t reflect our desire to celebrate the strength and diversity of our country at this inaugural,” Whisenant said in a statement.

The liberal website ThinkProgress posted audio of the sermon Wednesday. In the talk, which the pastor said he gave 15 or 20 years ago, Giglio cites Scripture and called same-sex relationships sinful and an abomination. He warned congregants about what he called the “aggressive agenda” for acceptance of the “homosexual lifestyle.” And he recommended the writings of an advocate for therapy that aims to convert gays and lesbians into heterosexuals.

Repeatedly in the sermon, Giglio urged congregants to welcome gays and lesbians to the church and says God loves them.

In Thursday’s statement, Giglio said “speaking on this issue has not been in the range of my priorities in the past 15 years.”

Obama’s inaugural planners have put an emphasis on reflecting diversity in the festivities, including the participation of gay Americans. Obama personally selected Richard Blanco, whose work explores his experience as a Cuban-American gay man, as the inaugural poet. And the Lesbian and Gay Band Association of St. Louis was one of the first selections to march in the inaugural parade.

Whisenant said the committee was considering others to deliver the benediction at the Jan. 21 event.

The Think Progress post cited by the AP points to remarks from Giglio found on “a Christian web site:”

The 54-minute sermon, entitled “In Search of a Standard – Christian Response to Homosexuality,” advocates for dangerous “ex-gay” therapy for gay and lesbian people, references a biblical passage often interpreted to require gay people be executed, and impels Christians to “firmly respond to the aggressive agenda” and prevent the “homosexual lifestyle” from becoming accepted in society.

Think Progress cited this passage:

”We must lovingly but firmly respond to the aggressive agenda of not all, but of many in the homosexual community. … Underneath this issue is a very powerful and aggressive moment. That movement is not a benevolent movement, it is a movement to seize by any means necessary the feeling and the mood of the day, to the point where the homosexual lifestyle becomes accepted as a norm in our society and is given full standing as any other lifestyle, as it relates to family.”

And this one:

”I would refer you maybe just to the article “Born gay?” by Joe Dallas, who is the president of a ministry that helps with homosexuals in “recovery.” It was found in Christianity Today in June of 1992. It really unfolds for us that the evidence that they say is there, that the media wants to tell us is there really isn’t there at all. But I want to tell you this tonight. Even if it was there…

“How do you respond to that? How do you respond to the news reports that we’re hearing in the last few months that there is a genetic tendency to be an over-eater and it’s been supposedly proved by the scientists? That there is a genetic tendency to addictive behavior. Alcoholics by and large have a genetic tendency to addictive behavior. I predict in our lifetimes and not a very long period of time from now, scientists and geneticists will have found a way to prove a gene theory for every malfunction in sinful society. And do you know why? We talked about it the very first week—because we do not want responsibility for our choices.”

I still can’t fathom what the White House thought it was getting when it booked a well-known, conservative pastor. Somebody didn’t do his homework.

Beyond that, opinion toward same-sex marriage is one of the most rapidly shifting areas of cultural policy ever seen in American politics. One wonders how many people will soon be penalized for being on the wrong side of this one – which could be a dilemma for a president who wants to be seen as reaching out to religious conservatives.

To that point, here’s a paragraph from a statement that Giglio has posted on the Passion City Church website:

The issue of homosexuality (which a particular message of mine some 20 years ago addressed) is one of the most difficult our nation will navigate. However, individuals’ rights of freedom, and the collective right to hold differing views on any subject is a critical balance we, as a people, must recover and preserve.

What Christian pastor or Christian leader will not be against homosexuality? Will this mean that they will now choose a non-Christian leader for the benediction? The irony is that the president will be using three Christian bibles; each one of them condemns homosexuality.

Did they forget to check with the minister that perhaps his views have “grown and changed” as Obama’s views have?? He was against same sex marriage in his first term and recently before his run for reelection he had an epiphany and believes that same sex marriage should be sanctified by church and government. Talk about hypocrisy….

M; not in the new testament. The ‘new law’ after Christ is what most Christians look toward for guidance. The old testament was the pre-Christ laws/atonement, ect. Until each of us can find love and peace within ourselves and our own hearts and stop bashing individuals despite their sexual proclivity, we will always remain a society that stands in need of help. If President Obama inauguration committee decided to remove this minister, the committee has the right to do so. When will we understand that politics will always remain politics. Christians as a whole dont have antigay policies. Many Methodist, Lutheran, and Episcopal Priest have no issues with gays, there is a whole denomination that ministers to the gay community, Metropolitan Community Churches. I personally find it offensive that those hate mongers out there have hijacked my faith and pretend they have a clue as to what God thinks. That you know the heart of God, the arrogance! The bible only discusses homosexual rape, read the scriptures in context, and Jesus never mentioned it. Paul only refers to it in the context of unbridled lust, and he also calls out straight folks in the same passage, using the same words. So this whole argument is about a bunch of men who are afraid of homosexuality, who are so wrapped up in their fears that they will make stuff up about God to justify their fear and loathing. Loathing, fear, disdain, hatred, none of theses is love. And this whole marriage thing is funny. You act like since the beginning of time marriage has been one man and one woman. NOT TRUE! someone made mention like polygamy was next or some asinine comment such, polygamy is what everyone in the old testament and most of the new testament practiced. Our version is very new. And also is NOT God’s definition (historically). I know those of you who know everything will take offense to this post, but if it makes you think…I done what I’ve been called to do.

The Obama administration wants a pastor who is a Christian who says homosexuality is OK.

And just recently, they aligned themselves with anti-Second Amendment individuals who routinely hire security personnel who protect their clients with handguns–not to mention his own security detail.

Before that, the Obama Administration found allies who denounced those who “don’t pay their fair share” of taxes who, of course, don’t pay taxes.

Obama desires a cloak of respectability without actually having the substance that makes one respectable. Hypocrisy personified. Obama’s substance is a paper-thin, almost translucent, veneer. Ditto for his followers. In the end, neither the followers nor ordinary Americans will benefit, only the one who “rules”.

@Danny-X and Good,
If you ask most Christian pastors, I am sure they would say divorce is wrong also. I am fairly certain none of them would say divorce is good. By the same token, I would say Christ loves the divorced just the same as he loves gays.

Thinking something is wrong is not the same as hating people who do it. If you ask me if going 80 mph on I-285 is wrong, I will say yes. Does that infer that I hate all the “speeders” in the world?

Also, please be aware that the Bible is split into before and after Christ. Before Christ, the Jewish law was the standard. After Christ, He became the standard. Many things in the Old Testament that were prohibited under Jewish law are no longer forbidden according to Christ. So instead of saying “The Bible is against it”, the question to Christians is, “Is Christ against it”. So things like types of thread or cloth are no longer applicable.

I know I am a sinner also. I don’t view my sins as any less than those of others, including gays and lesbians. Christ loves and and accepts all who come to him. I wish all would accept him. But I don’t hate others who choose not to.

It seems a lot of the commenters didn’t read carefully that the PASTOR pulled out on his own. HE made the decision to not accept to appear to not have the “message” overshadowed by other’s agenda! God loves all. But in marriage, it was clearly stated by the same person that it should be in between a man and a woman, then multiply. I am not at all judging the homosexuals, I love them. Which religion in the world teach same-sex marriage? Not a single religion in the world. The word
“marriage” may be taken out of the dictionary later on if the events are moving in this direction. In the national
Cathedral, the Episcopal Church is going to conduct the first homosexual marriage. When I met a group of ladies from Holland at the Bahrain airport in 1999, they were returning from Sri. Lanka. In our talk, they said in one voice ” we don’t need GOD’s help, we know, how to handle our affairs”. If the Creator is irreverent, then everybody has the right to create their own moral and spiritual laws!

“But in marriage, it was clearly stated by the same person that it should be in between a man and a woman, then multiply. I am not at all judging the homosexuals, I love them. ”

I’m not judging divorce, but Jesus clearly states that it is almost always never allowed. When it is allowed adultery in the marriage occurred. Re-marriage laws are also ignored. Now seeing how over 50% of all Christian divorces end in divorce proves that there is an awful lot of sin being ignored in southern churches.

2 people inside a church of God, in a ceremony performed by a “man of God” leader, swear “until death do us part,” only to get divorced a few years later, some even remarry in the same church.

Maybe good Christians should do a little research on what traditional marriage really is. Now I don’t hate divorced people, love the person, hate the sin. Isn’t that how it goes?

Gays should fear your God when the people that fill your pews do.

GOOD said at 11:45am: “No place in society for his kind of hate-fueled, outdated, uneducated bigotry. Evolve and treat others as you would have them treat you. Learn to acutally follow teaching in your own religion and stop shoving it down the throats of others”

Except that the clear implications of evolutionary theory do not teach to “treat others as you would have them treat you.” Jesus did/does. Evolution (basically your only option if you don’t believe in creation)says that its my reproductive prowess that in the end is the most “important” thing for the continued survival of my genes—something that homosexual acts don’t promote. So maybe it’s the believers in evolution who are actually not staying true to their own belief system when they promote/condone homosexuality.

I am spiritual but the more I have gotten spiritual and the more of the bible I have read- Jesus never once mentioned anything about homosexuality- The two greatest commandments centered around love- Love your neighbor, and love your lord with all of your heart- That was very onorthodox back in the day since there were almost 700 commandments- but I don’t think that was by accident Jesus saying those were the greatest because a lot of condemnation centers around hate of others and since you aren’t like me I don’t like that. Hence, why you see others that frown about christianity- It wasn’t until I started going to Buckhead Church Andy Stanley never says a word about it- Jesus didn’t either though-

If you want to pull out the bible ranks- I will one up most of these hypocrites on these blogs don’t even read the bible for if you ever read the book of Leviticus I doubt anyone in their right mind would endorse those believes in today’s society jewish or christian-

Anyone who quotes a Bible that uses the word “homosexual” is using a bad translation. The concept of homosexuality as we understand it today didn’t even exist until the 1800s, and wasn’t widely accepted until a century later. The Bible can’t say anything about homosexuality as we know it today because the original authors had no understanding of it–much like the Bible can’t tell you anything about gravity, the combustion engine, or an iPhone.

In the proper context, the Bible condemns pagan temple rituals that involve same-sex behavior. It condemns promiscuous same-sex activity in the same ways it condemns promiscuous heterosexual activity. It condemns same-sex activity that involves an exchange of money (a.k.a. prostitution). It condemns same-sex activities that occur as a sign of dominance or power (which was a common practice when armies won battles in those days to humiliate and dominate the losing side).

But the Bible never once comes close to condemning a committed, loving relationship between two people of the same sex. And it’s time you evangelicals accepted that. It’s only a matter of time until we look back and view this type of bigotry as being just as disgraceful as the bigotry against interracial couples.

Rebel Yell

January 10th, 2013

Homosexuality is a choice. Y’all know it. You won’t ever admit it, but you know it. Often a form of rebellion. But ya know, all sin is rebellion against God. We are all guilty. But we can all be saved by the blood of Jesus. He died to pay for all of our sins, and He was resurrected! Accepting Jesus as Savior and Lord is the only way to restore fellowship with our Creator. The Holy Spirit will live in you and guide you in this life until we join our Father in Heaven. Thats the truth in a nutshell. I’ve seen alcoholics healed, addicts reborn, gays made straight, adulterers reformed, criminals become productive members of society. I know God is real!

td sodomy is defined in Isaiah as being inhospitable to others.

Biblically, it has nothing to do with homosexuality.

You are either kidding or you have not actually read the bible:

“Now the two angels came to Sodom in the evening, and Lot was sitting in the gate of Sodom. When Lot saw them, he rose to meet them, and he bowed himself with his face toward the ground. And he said, ‘Here now, my lords, please turn in to your servant’s house and spend the night, and wash your feet; then you may rise early and go on your way.’ . . . so they (the two angels) turned in to him (Lot) and entered his house . . .

“Now before they lay down, the men of the city, the men of Sodom, both old and young, all the people from every quarter, surrounded the house. And they called to Lot and said to him, ‘Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us that we may know them carnally.’ So Lot went out to them through the doorway, shut the door behind him, and said, ‘Please, my brethren, DO NOT DO SO WICKEDLY!’ ” (Genesis 19:1-7, NKJV throughout)

“If a man lies with a male as he lies with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination. They shall surely be put to death. Their blood shall be upon them . . . . If a man mates with an animal, he shall surely be put to death, and you shall kill the animal. If a woman approaches any animal and mates with it, you shall kill the woman and the animal. They shall surely be put to death. Their blood is upon them.” (Leviticus 20:13, 15-16)
“You shall not lie with a male as with a woman. It is an abomination. Nor shall you mate with any animal, to defile yourself with it. Nor shall any woman stand before an animal to mate with it. It is perversion.” (Leviticus 18:22-23)

Romans 1:24-28

King James Version (KJV)

24 Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves:

25 Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.

26 For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature:

27 And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet.

28 And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient;

I agree with pastor Giglio in his comments. I feel that homosexuality is wrong in the eyes of The Lord. However, I choose not to judge becuase I know that they will face the untimate judgement one day as will abortionist and other murderers. I also think that the government stepping into gay marriage is not the right thing to do as there is never and will never be such thing as”gay marriage”. Marriage is a biblical term and the definition is a union between man and woman. Therefore, it’s not possible to have a “gay marriage”. There can be a gay union or a gay partnership, but, there will never be a gay marriage. There is way too many things plaguing our country right now than to waste time debating something as this.

If you take the religion out of it, homosexuality has to be a choice or it would have disappeared via Darwin’s “natural selection”. Since two of the same gender cannot normally reproduce, how else could it have continued? It couldn’t. Good. How can we ever heal as a nation and ever come together for the good of all of us if there’s someone like that involved in the Inauguration? His words clearly speak for themselves.

The other side of that question could be how can we ever heal as a nation and come together before all sinners repent and come to God since we are a nation based on the Christianity.

Suggestion…..why not a rabbi for the prayer? Or maybe a clergyperson of another faith? Better yet, the pastor of my local church would be great. He serves in a southern church like Giglio (though he is a transplant from the midwest). Like Giglio, he is a white male. He is not well known like Giglio, but is much beloved by his congregants and well respected in the community. He ministers to the least, the lost, the oppressed. He is engaged in interfaith ministries and practices tolerance. He loves and accepts others, no matter who they are, with the unconditional love of Jesus.

America should never condone divorce as our country was built on a biblical basis. We used to base our divorce laws on the Bible. The only state you could get a no-fault divorce was in Nevada. Now even our own state of Georgia has thrown out the Bible, allowing adultery to become normal.

Interesting that the media is only using the first part of Giglio’s comment on the matter…here’s the rest entire comment in context.

“The issue of homosexuality … is one of the most difficult our nation will navigate. However, individuals’ rights of freedom, and the collective right to hold differing views on any subject is a critical balance we, as a people, must recover and preserve,” he said. “As a pastor, my mission is to love people, and lead them well, while lifting up the name of Jesus above anything else. I’m confident that anyone who knows me or has listened to the multitude of messages I have given in the last decade would most likely conclude that I am not easily characterized as being opposed to people — any people. Rather, I am constantly seeking to understand where all people are coming from and how to best serve them as I point them to Jesus.”

The idea folks (and I am talking mostly to the unbelievers) is that we do love people – all people. We do want them in church because, for those troubled or in sin, that is where they need to be. However, that does not mean we have to conclude their sin (I’m speaking of any sin here) is acceptable to God. It’s not.

Yes, science has determined that genetics play a role in behavior a.k.a. sin. But the Bible already states that by declaring that sin passes down generations to generation. It is very specific about handle to break the cycle. Having a genetic component does not negate personal responsibility nor invalidate free will.

None of us can go to God for salvation unless we first repent of our sin. Repent means not only be regretful but also to turn away from it. The liar cannot become a Christian and continue in the life of lying. The prostitute cannot continue selling herself. And those who commit sexual sins (defined as any sex outside marriage, pornography and the like) cannot continue in that sin either.

Jesus said “Neither do I condemn you. Go and sin no more” when he saved the woman found in prostitution. That was meant for all of us – not just her.

No doubt some will have momentary failings. We all do in our individual sins. Thank God He doesn’t “unsave” us when those occur. But to live in a life of sin without change or repentance is to thumb your nose at God’s mercy and grace. It is to take lightly the sacrifice of Jesus’ death. And it also shows no confidence in His victory over sin by His victory over death in His resurrection.

That is the crux of the matter in this particular issue. Either we believe that Jesus can save us and help us conquer sin (any sin) or we don’t. That doesn’t mean the sin will suddenly disappear. It does for some, but some will have a battle with their particular sin the rest of their lives (a.k.a. Paul’s thorn in the flesh) but live daily in God’s grace as did Paul.

If we say this sin cannot be changed and therefore isn’t sin, we not only deny the Bible but deny the resurrection and the victory in it – that Jesus conquered the wages of sin which are death – therefore gives us victory over that sin.

Uh Huh.....You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother's eye.

Sure they do! Churches are full of people that have broken the divorce and re-marriage laws Jesus set. Most churches arrogantly ignore the rules of divorce. Cherry picking at its finest. Churches bless divorce by allowing them. Churches bless re-marriage by allowing them. Churches also allow remarriage with full ceremonies.

Bringing up divorce is certainly valid here, it points out the laughable hypocrisy on the whole marriage debate. Half of all Christian marriages end in divorce. The minority of those divorces involve adultery. Either way that is a lot of sin. You are either an adulterer, or you are divorcing without cause which Jesus forbids. Re-marriage laws have been tossed, the adultery in those cases ignored.

“First off you have such a limited knowledge of the Bible that you are confused.”

Spare me the deflections td, you were the one trying to use Deuteronomy a while back. Are you Jewish or Christian?

“We as a nation should not be condoning an action that is an abomination in God’s eye so there should be no gay marriage.”

Well there certainly should be no divorce then! Or re-marriage! Jesus condemned divorce and was silent on homosexuality.

Why should gays fear the Bible, most Christians sure don’t, certainly not the divorced and re-married ones!

No deflections on my part because adultery is a sin, no fault divorces is a sin and Sodomy is an abomination. All three sins can be forgiven if you get down on your knees, ask for forgiveness and not repeat the sins again.

If sodomy was truly an abomination 95% of every heterosexual person on earth would have been struck dead by the sky fairy long ago. You bible thumpers just get more loony and pathetic by the day. Of course ALL of you are complete hypocrites. You pick and choose which bible verses you’re willing to follow depending on which ones you agree with. All the others, you just ignore. How CONVENIENT!

He needs diversity at his festivities, he sure doesn’t have it in his cabinet. He needs one of those binders full of women, he derided Romney about. He was called on this today, by Charlie Rangel, the guy accused of disenfranchising Hispanic voters, just last fall. Obama is do as I say kinda guy, not do as I do kind.

You gay guys keep on truckin with each other and leave the women for the rest of us. Being gay IS a choice unless you were born with sexual organ deformities. I’m not against you-I’m just saying be honest, you’re gay because you like being gay. Be accountable for your free choice and don’t blame heredity.

Anyone opposed to homosexuality is given one option — keep your mouth shut or else.

The intolerant left strikes again.

Nothing “left” about it all. The faction whose “sensibilities” are being “protected” is an adjunct and “arm” created by the “de facto” “rightwing’s core element of the French assembly as described by Carlyle in his “History of the French Revolution.”

It is fascism against oppressing those who would be the holy and righteous Children of G-d in America-Zion.

20 years ago? I guess one cannot change an opinion in 20 years. Way to go preacher since there are those who would have made a 20 year old talk an ongoing distraction. Maybe he has moved on but there are plenty of people stuck in the 40’s, 50’s and 60’s in this country.

Living With Open Eyes, you should change your name to Living With Closed Brain. Your eyes can be open all you want, but you’re blind so it won’t matter. But you seem to know an awful lot about how and why the gays are gay. Is there something you wish to tell us? Hmmmmmmm?

I particularly love you who are quoting from “revised” versions of the Bible. If you read the original translation from the Greek Bible, there is not one mention of homosexuality. But about a hundred years ago, mankind started tinkering with and embellishing the Bible to suit their present day needs. They even managed to insert homosexuality into the New Testament during the last century!

The only good thing about all you bible thumpers is you are all dying out. People are leaving your churches faster than you can replace them. Even though the 1st Amendment to the Constitution starts out with, “Congress shall pass no laws respecting an establishment of religion,” because of religion many states legally bar homosexuals from marrying. The sooner we get “God” out of government, the better we will be as a nation. The first job would be removing tax exempt status from religious organizations. The National Debt would disappear within a few years.

And as I’ve said here before, Jesus was probably a homo. Think about it: He was a carpenter when carpentry was an art, there is no mention in the Bible of any female love interest for Jesus, and most telling, he exclusively hung out with 12 male “disciples.”

Couple of points: Regarding divorce, no church I know of supports it. In the SBC church, those who remarry can not be remarried in the sanctuary and most pastors will not perform the ceremony. You are misinterpreting what Jesus said. He said, to paraphrase, that God did not create divorce. God created marriage. Man created divorce. Since man was going to have divorce regardless of God’s desires (hardness of heart) here are the rules (referring to Moses teachings). However, Jesus didn’t “overrule” those rules. He merely stated those rules were because of man’s hardened condition, not of God’s desire.

Churches have had to deal with the issue of divorce because it is prevalent in society. Yes, they do preach on it and are actually preaching on it more because of the growth of divorce.

Churches offer support groups to heal those hurt by it, counselors to help prevent it, and countless other ministries for the spouses and children. That is not supporting divorce but tending to the wounded.
The wounded, however they become wounded, need church and need Jesus the most. That is not a time to tell them they are sinning, but to love them. That is what Jesus would do.
The time eventually comes in the lives of every divorced person that they must be accountable for their actions in the situation and ask God for forgiveness. Every divorced Christian I know has done this. Then it is up to the person to decide how God would have them handle their life. Some try to work things out with their spouse. Some, I know, have decided never to remarry. Others felt that God’s mercy and grace allowed for someone else to come into their life to love and remarry.
That is where it is not my place to judge. That is where God tells us not to judge.
A choice that is not an option is to continue in their sin. They cannot continue going from relationship to relationship, divorce to divorce. That is what Jesus said. Divorce is a very serious matter, because God takes marriage very seriously.

With homosexuals, it is the same way in SBC churches and many other denominations. There are counselors, support groups, and many others geared to tend to those wounded. That is also not a time to judge them, but to love them. That is what Jesus would do.
However, there will come a time when they must also take responsibility for their actions. There will come a time for repentance. Just as in any sin.
What a homosexual then does with his or her life from the point of salvation is also between them and God. Some I know choose to try to become heterosexual through various treatments and ways – and yes – some are successful. Some opt to not have any romantic or sexual relationships and deal with their conflicts with God’s grace daily. I will not judge them for those choices.
A choice that is not an option is to continue in sin. No one can continue in sin (any sin) and have a relationship with God at the same time. The Bible explains this in several passages, mostly relating to money, but also applicable to anything you put above a love of God.

Regarding Jesus, why he was single (although some try to assert that He was married) and his sexuality I will say only this: Jesus had a bigger mission – so big that a relationship of any kind wasn’t on his agenda. Also, he had the love of His Father, so he had no other need for such an earthly attachment which would pale in comparison.
Also, Jesus is God so he fulfills the image of God (which God designed a married male and female couple to do) in and of Himself both when He was on earth and now in heaven. He was perfect and contained all the attributes of God (since He is God), so Jesus could related to both males and females equally – just as God relates to each person intimately with understanding.
