Johnny Isakson a sudden insider in the debt-ceiling debate

For the last 18 months, U.S. Sen. Saxby Chambliss has served as Georgia’s lead voice when it comes to the debate over the federal government’s finances – the Gang of Six and all that.

But that may have just changed.

Committee assignments have just come out, and U.S. Sen. Johnny Isakson is a new member of the Senate Finance Committee – which will serve as that chamber’s venue for debate over the debt ceiling, all revenue issues, plus health care programs under Social Security and Medicare.

All are issues left untouched by this week’s “fiscal cliff” deal – which both Isakson and Chambliss supported.

Lord knows why, but Isakson, who often touts his 33 years of experience in real estate, had pursued the spot. “I am absolutely thrilled to serve on the Senate Finance Committee, and I thank Leader Mitch McConnell for allowing me the opportunity,” the junior senator said in a press release.

You’ll recall that in 2011, Isakson had a chance at a finance committee slot when U.S. Sen. John Ensign, R-Nev., resigned under pressure. But Isakson — then and now — was a member of the Senate Ethics Committee that investigated Ensign. He judged that it would be unseemly for him to try to replace his ousted colleague, and withdrew his name from consideration.

The cost for Isakson was a seat on the Senate Foreign Affairs Committee, where he was the ranking Republican on the Africa subcommittee.

Chambliss retains his top-level committee assignment, as ranking member of the Senate Intelligence Committee.

Better theory is that Johnny can give some cover to Saxby. They both know that the House GOP members from Georgia are looney, and Saxby needs help in beating off the wingnuts in the 2014 primary.

Giving ‘cover’ to Saxby? Whatever. After that vote on Tuesday, both these guys are now targets for a primary challenge. It will come. However I feel that Isakson will say screw it in 2016 and retire. I just wish he’d do it sooner. He and Saxby are useless in the Senate.

You know…why should right wing nutbags be the only ones to vote in the Rep primary? There aren’t a LOT of white non cons in this state, but the dem party is …well…we all know what it really is now don’t we?

So WHY should the GOP automatically be crazy here?

Good points pincorrect and newt. I can’t help but think that sooner or later even the dimmest of the dim bulb Republican base will get fed up with the corruption and mis management of one party Republican government in Georgia…

Not a big fan of the rep legislature, T-SPLOST, as an example. But corruption is a big charge. Please give examples.

Ah, whining cons abound! Nothing is ever good enough. If you don’t like him, why don’t you ask McConnell to appoint another Democrat!

I would love to see the Johnny Isakson I have known from the past in Georgia State politics reappear in this new position. The 20th Century Johnny was a real leader and solution man in our legislature and even at the State Board of Education, the version of late in DC has been a follower of anything Republican. My hope is after the changes we saw in 2012 and the ineffectiveness of the last Congressional session that we see Mr. Isakson lead on the Sequester and Debt Ceiling issues. If he does this we have the best chance to be part of a grand solution and keep our military bases intact. Good luck, Johnny.

Isakson is not interested in leadership. He’s interested in the new, high-powered banking contacts he and his staffers are going to make as a member of the Senate Finance Committee.

Johnny and Saxby are two of the biggest RINOs ever. I will be glad when they are gone….they do not vote on Constitutional principles. I am ashamed that they “represent” my state.

I told everyone that Obama wants to control the entire economy. Even with the tax increase on the rich they are still not paying their “fair share”. Please do not continue to tell me that Obama is not a socialist.

“President Obama cut a video, distributed by his reelection, to reiterate his belief that the wealthiest Americans still aren’t paying their “fair share” of taxes and to outline a second-term agenda ranging from environmental policy to gun control.

Obama started by celebrating the tax increases — “making our tax code more progressive than it’s been in decades,” he said — that will take place because of the fiscal cliff deal.

“Obviously, there is still more to do when it comes to reducing our debt,” Obama said in the video. “And I’m willing to do more, as long as we do it in a balanced way that doesn’t put all the burden on seniors or students or middle class families, but also asks the wealthiest Americans to contribute and pay their fair share.”

Saxby and Johnny are nothing but tax and spend RINO’s. Ask Johnny about bailing out the real estate industry in Atlanta to the tune of 20 mil. Ask Saxby why he voted no on the legislation that would have taken back 4 billion from the ethanol program.

We are 16 trillion in debt and Saxby and Johnny want to spend even more!

It’s obvious Johnny is a go along to get along Senator. He’s helping Saxby, who’s up for reelection in two years. From Johnny’s appearance in you photo, he might not be able to stand election in four years. It’ well known that he smokes cigarettes as much or more than Boehner.

He should not be on the finance committee, heck he obviously knows nothing about finance; he did nothing while bush cut the country’s income and raised the spending, I can not do that in my house. He was asleep while bush ran up a 5 trillion debt, burned a surplus and drove car off the cliff, that is why bush is hiding in the shrubs of Texas, ashamed, and hiding form some suits that would really like to get bush a room alone.

Just hope that Johnny and Saxby realize that this deal was trash and they did not do America any favors by being behind this vote. The people are demanding cuts to programs and not one was in this bill. Oh yeah plenty of pork was in there! I am so sick of these guys and can’t wait to vote against Saxby, but I bet he bows out and decides that he wants to retire.

It’s a miracle when any sane, responsible person wins a primary in either of the two wing-nut parties. Extremists drive out common sense centrists in both.
