Breaking: Ports strike averted

The Port of Savannah AJC/Brant Sanderlin

The Port of Savannah AJC/Brant Sanderlin

A threatened strike that would have shuttered all East Coast ports — including that state economic engine in Savannah — has been averted for now. This just in from the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service:

FMCS Director George H. Cohen issued the following statement today on the the United States Maritime Alliance and International Longshoremen’s Association labor negotiations:

WASHINGTON, D.C. — “I am extremely pleased to announce that the parties have reached the agreements set forth below as a result of a mediation session conducted by myself and my colleague Scot Beckenbaugh, Deputy Director for Mediation Services, on Thursday, December 27, 2012:

“The container royalty payment issue has been agreed upon in principle by the parties, subject to achieving an overall collective bargaining agreement. The parties have further agreed to an additional extension of 30 days (i.e., until midnight, January 28, 2013) during which time the parties shall negotiate all remaining outstanding Master Agreement issues, including those relating to New York and New Jersey.  The negotiation schedule shall be set by the FMCS after consultation with the parties.”

“Given that negotiations will be continuing and consistent with the Agency’s commitment of confidentiality to the parties, FMCS shall not disclose the substance of the container royalty payment agreement. What I can report is that the agreement on this important subject represents a major positive step toward achieving an overall collective bargaining agreement. While some significant issues remain in contention, I am cautiously optimistic that they can be resolved in the upcoming 30-day extension period.”

“On behalf of our Agency, I want to thank the parties, especially ILA President Harold Daggett and USMX Chairman & CEO James Capo, for their ongoing adherence to the collective bargaining process, which has enabled them to avoid the imminent deadline for a work stoppage that could have economically disruptive nationwide implications.”    For a PDF version of the FMCS statement, click here.

Now to see if the states took it up the wazoo for it.

Or did we break another union?

Why does Aesop hate the middle class so much?

Other than unions, there really are not any other organized interests lobbying on behalf of the middle class. Since day 1, unions have fought for better working conditions, better pay, and better benefits for their membership. Who are their members? Not financiers or corporate tycoons, but those who work hard for a living. Those who fit our homes with plumbing, those who lay bricks, those who assemble machinery, those who maintain our electrical and communications infrastructure, those who build our homes and skyscrapers, etc. If you can think of a blue collar job, there is probably a union fighting to prevent the exploitation of that labor force.

This is something Aesop and her ilk do not understand. They hate blue collar America and believe corporate profits should be horded away for the shareholders rather than used to pay the workforce that makes America possible.

The latter half of the 20th century has been a story of middle class decline that is strongly attributable to the decline in union membership. Middle class wages have stagnated, pensions are nonexistent, and job security is but a phrase long lost because of outsourcing all the while the rich get richer by not paying out a fair share to the working men and women that make it all possible. Aesop wouldn’t have it any other way. She has the middle class and unions right where she wants them…under the choking foot of a venture (vulture) capitalist or another right-to-fire state.

This is what I meant yesterday when I said that capitalism breeds aristocracy.

Well, so much for rightwing approach of Fla. Gov. Rick Scott. Collective bargaining can work when politicians stay out of it.

Eli – Wrong again. Gold plated pensions, retirement at 50, campaign contribution money laundering apparatus for the democrats, government contract rigging, silly work rules, this ain’t your great grandfather’s union. Y’all brought the busting on yourselves.

You’re correct Eli, and many of the benefits provided for today’s workers are because of union efforts. Aesop probably enjoys some of those benefits, whether or not she’s in a union.

Another example of a con working against their own best interest.

Its a pretty safe bet if any of the GA legislators had anything to do with it there was a lot of under the table payoff involved. Anything accomplished was not in favor of the blue collier workers.

obozo pays off the favorite corporations of the liberals with mountains upon mountains of tax payer dollars and demonizes all the rest of them. It’s really pretty mindless. Do you hate capitalism or do you love it? Or are you capable of comprehending your own two faced hypocrisy? Can you even spell hypocrisy?

psychotics.

Libs love capitalism when they get to control the distribution of the money so generated….otherwise, it’s evil. (It’s the same economic principles of the Fascists…government regulation of privately owned capital. Ring a bell?)

Unions have no credibility. The teachers unions will support their members no matter what as long as they pay the ransom uh oh I mean does. Even the child molesting teachers like those in the rubber rooms of NY are fought for. So Eli, not matter what you say as a pathetic excuse, if you support a union for one second you are supporters those scumbags child molesting and raping teachers that the union wants to keep on the payrolls funded by us the taxpayer. Good job eli.

I am sorry for being how I am. I was a bully in school and never really studied, thus I never learned nor have I been able to expand my worldview. The result has been the intolerance, stupidity, and hate you witness on this blog.

I do not understand the difference between capitalism, the theoretical economic system, and capitalism the ideology. If I were smart and not as lazy perhaps I would pick a text or two written by prominent economists rather than relying on the nonsense espoused on talk radio and fox news. Like most extremists I only see in black and white…like a fundamentalist.

I can not help who I have become. I prefer to blame the government because it is convenient. The only person I guess I can blame is myself…for not reading, for not exposing myself to more than that which is flattering to my worldview, and for speaking (writing) about things which I have no real knowledge about.

You should. Just imagine being in it’s shoes, not enough intelligence to debate the issues, all it can do is stalk, harass and spy on those it disagrees with. Feels like it’s surrounded and every name belongs to one person that’s out to get it. Always on the watch for those black corporate helicopters. Hears voices. Writes it all down, just in case.

123, I should be flattered that I have been mistaken for you,you write cogent and insightful comments. However, I have to take this comparison with a grain of salt since it comes from the certifiable nutcase, std. He is obsessed with me for some reason, I think because of his transferrence to me of his anger at john mccain. He loves john mccain, but johnny loves lindsay, and std lies awake tortured nights crying into his pillow with his frustration and pain. Somehow in his psychosis, he blames me. Go figure. We should pray for him.

As for e sop/he sop (sop: to suck, to mop up.) Notice how he and std are always one of the first one or two commenters on every blog post of wingnut, excuse me, wingfield, or this one. Can you imagine the pathetic, useless life that sits anxiously, day and night, awaiting the next blog post so they can be the first to post some totally ignorant, totally stupid, totally bereft of any worthwhile benefit comment. They’ve never had an original thought in their lives, except the snark they think is so clever, but in actuality would embarrass any 12 year old. So to try and give some meaning to their lives they vomit the filth they ingest from talk radio, think of ignorant names to call the President, and like little Jack Horner they think they are smart. They are to be pitied by us all.
