After declaring U.S. Sen. Saxby Chambliss “theoretically vulnerable” this week, Public Policy Polling of North Carolina has run out the rest of its Georgia poll, with these highlights:
– Apparently bruised by bitter campaigns over transportation (lost) and charter schools (won), Gov. Nathan Deal’s job approval rating stands at 37 percent among voters – one reason why Deal, moving into his crucial third year as governor, needs a smooth and productive legislative session in January.
The PPP survey declares Deal to be vulnerable if Democrats are able to muster the right candidate in 2014 – a very large “if.” Some hypothetical match-ups: U.S. Rep. John Barrow, 44/40; Kasim Reed (never happen), 47/40; State Sen. Jason Carter, 46/38.
– Likewise, the fiscal cliff debate may be taking its toll on U.S. Sen. Johnny Isakson, whose approval rating also stands at 37 percent. But he isn’t up for re-election until 2016.
– Former President Jimmy Carter approve/disapprove rating stands at 55/38. President Barack Obama is at 46 percent approval, matching his Georgia ballot showing in November.
– Chipper Jones should consider politics. The retired Atlanta Braves third-baseman’s job approve/disapprove rating is 57/11.
– Georgia fans outnumber Georgia Tech groupies, 40/17. Which pushes Attorney General Sam Olens’ unfortunate Tweet of last week into irrelevancy.
– 70 percent of those polled thought a new stadium home for the Atlanta Falcons was unnecessary.
– 42 percent of Georgia Republicans said they would be willing to secede from the United States because of President Barack Obama’s re-election. A like number say they wouldn’t. From PPP spokesman Tom Jensen: “I doubt that many Republicans would really secede if they had the choice- not that many people are signing the secession petitions- but their willingness to say they would is a measure of how unhappy they are over the president’s reelection.”

I would like to add: If Republican economics worked, why are most of the red states so poor? Shouldn’t the red states be the most prosperous? Both the red and blue states are under the fed., so don’t use the argument that DC is holding the red states down. The blue states out performed the red states even when Reagan and Bush was in charge. A history of discrimination, backwardness, and lack of educational investment are the reasons why most red states are not competitive. Those were stupid decisions that were made at the state level. Own it.
High paying jobs won’t come this way–not enough of GA residents have the education or skills to do them. Even setting the corporate tax rate at 0% in GA won’t change that fact. GA would just end up with lot of low-paying jobs. It would become the 3rd-World answer for American industrialists–a great place for low-paying and low-skill jobs. Sure, a few would get rich off of this system, but it would not create real wealth for the masses. The most important need is an educated workforce, something GA will lack regardless. Most GA residents lack education and skills–worse than the national average. They are not able to do high-paying jobs. Poverty would only increase in GA as wages would free fall. Without a minimum-wage, I could foresee at least a million residents working for three-five dollars per hour.

If Georgia seceded, it would be even more impoverished than it already is: Republican states receive the most Federal aid… without Federal help, this would become more like a third-world country, quickly. It would be a terrible idea.

Read the story in the Macon Telegraph this morning about the auction place over in Gordon.

Interesting poll, sir. But where are the head-slapping polls about Georgia Democrats. I’m thinking you might find that 92% of Democrats would repeal the 2nd amendment … Remove God from the pledge … Ban plastic bags … Require gluten free grits … Throw Karl Rove in jail …
Just throwing out inflammatory polls to make some point ain’t worth a damn.

What a pathetic, angry little group of bigots some of the Southern GOPpers are. Hey guys, how’d that work out last time you got mad about African Americans and gave that whole secession thing a shot?
Here’s the deal, if you are for secession, then you are not a patriot, but rather a traitor to your country. Fortunately, you all are just too pathetic to take seriously.

Jimmy Carter’s approval rating should be 100%. He has beent he best ex-President ever. Of course the RedWOG’s (Rednecks Without GEDs) probably have no idea what he has done the last 30 years.
By contrast look at the Bushes. And the GOP Patriarch, Ronald Reagan, probably couldn’t get the party’s nomination now becasue he isn’t far-right enough.
GOP: I hope you stay on the same, negative, whining course you and FOX News practice daily. It will ensure you will lose the next election– much worse!

Clinton gave Bush a budge surplus (I think in the $230–$350 billion) range– soemone can check this pout as to the exact figure. bush turned that into an $11 trillion deficit. and, he didn’t figure the wars into the deficit each year.
Let’s face it: FOX News, rush Limbaugh, Karl Rove, and the like are dinosaurs. They are all paid a lot of steer the Right Wing Wagon– right off the– pardon my pun– friscal cliff!

I conducted a poll of Obama voters and confirmed the theory that Obama voters are unemployed losers waiting for handouts paid for by “taxin’ da rich.”
I am more optimistic than ever that these Republican ignoramuses and bigots (hat tip Clarence Darrow) are singing their guttural swan song.
Their devastating thirty year experiment in trickle down cowardice and dishonesty is proving to be their undoing. And because they cannot evolve, our deadly American fascists are going to go the way of their predecessors in Europe.
And the sooner, the better…

It’s amazing how people have claims in here about unpatriotic and the likeness to education and democrat-yet they apparently do not know their own history very well.
Our history began with a seceding of our own right from Britain, but more importantly, we formed a “Union” – and that “Union” was of the collective states, where the states sovereignty was actually a pretty important issue for our founding fathers. In fact, it’s the whole reason that you have 2 chambers, and the “more” powerful office in general is regarded as the Senate, where states have equal power and influence over a vote.
The trouble for the “Union”, is the Federal Government has largely overstepped it’s founding purpose. We have become a tax poor society, and the democrats have played a great smoke screen on this whole 1%. The bottom line, the government has a spending problem that it cannot tax it’s way out of.
S&P downgrading our credit rating should have been a wake up call, but instead, the general populace cannot see the forest for the trees – and politics in general for both parties have become a game of smoke and mirrors for election – not a candidate on principal.
This country is in trouble, and you have the radicals that make the trouble enormously larger than it is, which makes the other half just think their point is crazy. The sad thing is it’s not terribly far from the truth if we don’t fix our “spending” problem and quit worrying about blaming who is paying how much – we cannot sustain a 3.8 trillion budget that is growing.

Last time I checked Ga. voted Republican all the way down the ticket, so it appears to me that the few liberal democrats in atlanta and a few other cities that just hate it because they cant out vote the rest of the state should pack up and leave and move to california of Florida where you at least have a chance to not have your vote count toward a winner. It will never happen in Ga. because we look at ga as two states Atlanta and the rest of the state. As a member of the Ga republican party we never concentrate on Atlanta during the campaingning process.

I agree with Third Party Queen. I have supported the Republican Party for over 30 years & voted for Mitt Romney in the presidential election. I could never support the Obama administration’s socialistic policies, but the GOP has lost touch with me & the rest of middle America. It has become a party more suited for the rich & the Tea Party is too far to the right. That leaves a lot of voters like myself without a party to support. Maybe we need the Middle Party.

As time has gone by, I have begun to rethink the wisdom of not allowing the South to secede in the first place. By now, the US would still be a superpower while the South would inevitably sunk into economic irrelevancy and probably have been the subject of rebellion from its large slave population. But the US wouldn’t have the continued economic or emotional burden of dealing with its inbred half.
