Updated at 5:15 p.m. to included comments from Calvin Moss, the Woodstock police chief.
Original: This embarrassing item just appeared on The Caucus, a New York Times blog:
In Woodstock, Ga., about 30 miles north of Atlanta, the president of a homeowners’ association sent an e-mail on Sunday informing residents that the entrance gates would be closed 24 hours a day beginning at 6 p.m. Tuesday, out of concern over possible civil unrest after the election.
“I feel it is better to take a position of caution to enhance controlled access to the community until we see what (if any) negative repercussions may occur because of the results of the election,” wrote Bill Stanley, the president of the homeowners’ association at the Cottages of Woodstock, a residential community for people 55 and over.
Here you thought zombies weren’t real. On the other hand, it does send an interesting message to the grandkids: “You’re on your own.”
The NYT quotes Stanley as saying that he was ordering enhanced controlled access to the community on the recommendation of the Woodstock police department.
Added: But we just fielded a call from Calvin Moss, the Woodstock police chief, who said that he has had a conversation with Stanley this afternoon — and Stanley denied getting any such information from the Woodstock police force.
“We have no reason to believe that the election and its aftermath will be anything but peaceful,” Moss said. “Certainly we would give no one that kind of information.”

Perhaps you folks haven’t seen the gutter-mouthed 97-year old and her minions in an Obama internet ad that threatened violence if Obama loses the election. The old wench’s language is enough to turn one off completely but, apparently, the Obama re-election team thinks it is appropriate.
Oh, I forgot: you have to go on FOX News to see anything untoward when it comes to Obama.

Scenario 2: You work nights. you get home at 3:00 a.m. What should you do for the next 15 hours????
I would be pitching a fit if my HOA decided to LOCK the gates at 6:00. Excuse me, but I pay my HOA fees, and I damn well better be able to get home at 8:00…
This is ludicrious, not to mention stupid. Reasons number 1-10 why I will NOT live in an HOA neighborhood. These people think they have the power.

I’ve worked in law enforcement for many years. I can assure you that readiness/preparedness plans were made in 2008 in case President Obama lost the election. There was plenty of street level intel to suggest there was going to be civil unrest if that scenario played out. The chiefs were particularly worried about violence from youth.

In the case of severe civil unrest, a gate or an armed guard isn’t going to do much of anything. I was merely pointing out that making plans and/or trying to be prepared for civil unrest is not being paranoid.

Unless by chance write-ins for Ron Paul or votes for Gary Johnson exceed those for Obamney/Rombama, big government/big spending is going to win the day. The status quo will keep the dependent classes well funded so civil unrest should be at a minimum. Small government is not going to win. Sound money is not going to win. Freedom and liberty are not going to win. The status quo will be maintained, the car will continue heading towards the financial cliff, and the welfare/warfare queens will continue to receive all of their checks.

I will be very surprised if there aren’t riots after Hussein is defeated tomorrow. Every good rioter knows that there are very few grievances that can’t be soothed with big screen TV’s, Nike tennis shoes and high-end blue jeans. Lottery tickets, cigarettes and alcohol complete the rioters shopping, or I should say “looting”, list.
WARNING: Rioters should be very careful to restrict their activities to the City of Atlanta. Other areas have a very low tolerance for such actions!

I think the USA and the world was shocked by Obama’s victory. Sure, he had momentum going in but it was one of those things where you wouldn’t believe it until the final vote was counted. Had Obama lost in 2008, I doubt very seriously that there would have been any civil unrest larger than seen after a sports team wins a championship.

This is really a dumb article. My parents live in that community and it’s a nice little place. Minorities are welcome. The head honcho of the HOA sends out group emails all the time to the residents and one of the issues they’ve been debating for several months is whether or not to keep the gate closed. They’re usually open during the day and closed at 6pm This is really a trumped up non story and possibly draws attention to a harmless and vulnerable community of senior citizens. Please get a grip people.

I’m betting most drive very economical cars, save their ziplock bags, watch every penny so they don’t have to burden their children or ask the government for any more than they feel they have earned over their years in the work force. I don’t get it at this point but I would imagine that when I am in their shoes, I might feel a threatened by the ways of the big sprawling, disposable world…cut them some slack and don’t be so judgmental till you have walked a mile in their orthopedic shoes.

The Civil Unrest will come later if Romney is elected. You think we have been in a recession – This candidate will surely sink the country into a depression. This is a candidate with no plan of action for anything at all. He just wants to be elected, and those that are supporting him just want to see what happens. What happens is party politics runs the country. The Republicans will not support any legislation proposed by a Democratic administration, and The Democrats will not support any legislation proposed by a Republican administration. And with Romney, half of the Republicans won’t even support him. This country is just that divided. People will not even support what’s in the best interest of the country. They just want to win!

I am amused by the posts about the derogatory comments pertaining to rednecks and southerners . Most of the people posting are most likely from the north to begin with and chose to move here for a job and a better life. Only light green and dark green marines. While some of your sad attempts at saracasm border racist and pig headed its still amusing to see we as Americans cant have an intelligent conversation of ideas without the racial under tones…high end blue jeans and tennis shoes? For all you idiots behind the keyboards black or white we cant get along as americans how do we defend the war on terror where they only care to harm americans. I don’t think that people realize that when the gates to a subdivision in Georgia are closed, it doesn’r mean they are locked. It simply means that anyone entering the subdivision will need to use their access card/code or have a resident let them in.

I don’t know what’s funnier — some 55+ community barring its doors after an election or the comments on this blog!!! Aquagirl, you may have to buy me a new monitor — this one has Diet Coke all over it from my laughter! And T, your comment on “and you thought zombies weren’t real” really scared up a cackle — I wonder if they happened upon them filming a scene from “The Walking Dead” near Atlanta and misinterpreted it?!
Everyone chill out. It will all be over tomorrow, thank God. Everyone can go back to muttering and yelling at the news, instead of each other.
I was so disappointed today when a co-worker picked up a Staples ad and then put it down, shaking her head. “Oh, I’m not buying anything from Staples — their chairman is a big Romney supporter.” I asked her, sarcastically, if she had information on the voting habits of the chairmen of Office Depot, Office Max and other office supply stores around town, so that she could be sure not to darken their doors if THEY were Romney supporters, too. She laughed — uncomfortably. I wish people could simply respect other people’s right to vote their conscience, instead of casting aspersions on their character and intelligence if they don’t feel the same way you do. Let’s do this: Let’s just ASSUME that people are voting for the candidate of their choice because they truly believe that candidate is the best choice for this country, and let’s not assign evil motives to those who vote differently. I truly believe that most people vote the way they do because, out of love for our country, they take the responsibility for choosing our President seriously.

In 1990 I had just moved here from Minnesota and had a 9th floor corner office downtown Atlanta. I watched the crowd roll out of the 5 points MARTA station like a hive of bees angered by the Rodney King decision. I watched the savage crowd descend on a poor white guy walking down the street and beat him within an inch of his life. My view of the world changed in an instant and I realized what a bunch of animal low-lifes lived here.
Then I turned on the radio and listened to the radio station reporter in the helicopter above describe these vicious animals as “demonstrators”. In an instant I realized that the people were not being informed by the press what was going on. My view of the press was changed in an instant. I called my wife and told her to pull the kids out of school, lock the doors and stay inside.
22 years later I remember those images like they were yesterday. If I see them again, I’ll be ready.

I was present at a Veteran’s Day ceremony in a small town in Georgia after Obama’s first year in office. A top official from a small local college spoke to the crowd of veterans and patriots. He quoted from the declaration of independence and exhorted the crowd that we have a right and a duty to revolt. The right wing and their claim to be the only Christians and the only patriots threatens this country in a very real way. This election will prove to them they are not speaking for country but only for their own paranoia. We elected Obama. We will elect him again tomorrow.

I notice the only place the word LOCKED is used is in the title. The quote says closed. There are a lot of gated communities that open the gate early in the morning and close them at a certain hour. It seems to me this community has just decided to close them early on Tuesday. I am quite sure that they will be able to get in and out by a controlled access panel, or whatever set up they have there. Seems it is the person who TITLED the article knew how to get people to react the way they wanted. A CLOSED and LOCKED access gate are two different things.

Face it folks — it doesn’t matter who wins tomorrow night, because WE ALL LOSE if either of these morons gets elected. Obama is a proven bigot/racist and an utter failure as a POTUS. He even makes George Bush look smart (and i didn’t know ANYONE other than Jimmy Carter could do that!!). Romney is just another schmuck who thinks he is smarter than everyone else because his Daddy had money. Either way, WE lose.
But as a devout independent, I do find it interesting to read the posts on here. They would certainly lead any reasonable adult with an IQ above 2-digits to the conclussion that those on the left are even more racist and hypocritical than those on the right (just an independant outsiders observation, nothing more).
And remember folks: VOTING FOR SOMEONE BECAUSE OF THEIR RACE IS JUST AS RACIST AS VOTING AGAINST SOMEONE BECAUSE OF THEIR RACE!!! If you vote for Obama because he is supposedly “black” then you are no better than a klan supporter who votes against Obama purely due to his race. Vote for the individual based on his ideaology, not based on what the DNC/RNC talking points tell you!! I’m begining to believe that we, as a nation, are no longer capable of cognitive logic or independant thought.

What a shame. It’s only because of the UNION’s First Amendment that those traitors are allowed to fly that ugly flag at all. It’s not illegal, but it’s UNAMERICAN.
Regardless, they can keep flying it from their pickup trucks all they like, but it’s the UNION flag that their kids pledge allegiance to everyday in school, and it’s the UNION flag that dominates the flagpoles at the library, post office, and everywhere else.
The good guys’ flag flies highest.

you can bank on the fact that these retirees have or will greatly outstrip any payments that they made to Social Security and Medicare. When they started paying in, the life expectancy that was used to calculate their payments was much lower. They’ve reelected the same group of thieves over and over, holding them to nothing and allowing them to run up deficits in the trillions. Now this generation of Baby Boomers has bankrupted the nation and they should be scared that the rest of us wake up and put a stop to it.

We pay way too much for health care. That is an undeniable fact. Single payer system would have been better but impossible to achieve. Obama set us on the right path.
We don’t need to be the lone ranger policing the world. Obama has us out of Iraq and exiting Afghanistan.
We have the worst distribution of income since the 1920s. This is the prime source of our economic problems. Plenty of wealth – supply. Too little demand – wages. Our companies are making record profits. Obama had identified this issue and is addressing it.
Our military is too large. I wish Obama would attack this juggernaut more directly.
I see a clear choice and I am confident that the POTUS will continue to lead us to peace and prosperity.

Entrance gates being closed doesn’t mean they are “locked”, preventing cars/residents from driving in. It means you have to have your access card to open the gates. They live in a gated community. Why is it such a big deal? It’s their right to not allow non-residents to roam around. (Gated communities also have to pay to maintain their streets, since the city doesn’t maintain roads once it becomes a private road).

Romney on “Women’s Rights And Choices Based On Religious Conscience”
http://womeninbusiness.about.com/od/womenspolitics/a/Where-Does-Mitt-Romney-Stand-On-Womens-Issues_2.htm
In the thick of the race to seek the Republican presidential race nomination, the GOP stands accused of engaging in a “war on women,” something the GOP loudly protests at every turn.
But as Shaw Kenawe points out, the GOP’s “determination to make a legal medical procedure more and more difficult for women, and for the presumptive nominee, Willard [Mitt] Romney, to say that one of the first things he would do as president is withdraw all government funding from Planned Parenthood, an organization that serves the health needs of poor women who are under insured or who have no insurance at all.”
Jennifer Epstein (Politico.com) reminds us of Romney’s public position on women’s rights. ” Romney’s statement that he would ‘get rid’ of Planned Parenthood and his support for a congressional measure to give any employer the chance to opt out of covering any health expense for “moral reasons.”
Marie Diamond also shared insights about Romney’s ambiguity on choice issues, “Although he claimed, ‘I would like to see the Supreme Court return this right to the states,’ he has recently pledged to push for federal abortion restrictions … Romney said he would expand a Bush-era rule that allows doctors to deny women access to contraceptives.”
Igor Volsky wrote an article (2011) about Romney’s intentions if he became president. “In the final days of the Bush administration, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) adopted a “conscience rule” permitting federally funded health care providers to opt out of health care services they found objectionable.” President Obama reversed the rule that, “could allow practitioners to deny women access to commonly used methods of birth control like ‘oral contraceptives, emergency contraception, and the IUD.’”
Mitt Romney has pledged to restore and strengthen the conscience protection. “We have to allow people to practice their faith and when they have a matter of conscience that they can’t participate in some form of activity which violates their faith, then they should be able to abide by their faith, particularly when there are plenty of opportunities for people to have a service provided.”

8 years of mismanagement of the US economy requires 8 years of fixing. The people criticizing Obama for not fixing the economy in 4 years need to stop drinking the Kool-aid and use their common sense. When Obama took office, we were losing 600,000 jobs a MONTH! When Obama took office, banks were going BANKRUPT. When Obama took office, we were spending BILLIONS on a war in IRAQ. When Obama took office, Wall Street was losing BILLIONS of dollars. When Obama took office, the value of our houses were under the prices we BOUGHT them. When Obama took office, BIN LADEN was still threatening the US with MORE terrorism. And when OBAMA took office, the American CAR industry was going BANKRUPT.
What did Obama achieve in 4 years?
We are NO LONGER LOSING 600,000 jobs, but NOW we have growth in JOB CREATION bringing the UNEMPLOYMENT f
rom 10 percent to 8 percent. He added FOUR MILLION JOBS during the 4 years which is a HUGE CHANGE from the 600,000 jobs we were LOSING in 2008.
The Banks are PROFITABLE under his presidency. The AMERICAN CAR industry was SAVED by OBAMA , although ROMNEY said LET THE AMERICAN CAR INDUSTRY GO BANKRUPT.
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/11/19/opinion/19romney.html?_r=0
Obama ended the WAR IN IRAQ, AND KILLED OSAMA BIN LADEN. The Housing Market is going back to the way it was because of the OBAMA’s presidency. And finally, the HEALTH INSURANCE COMPANIES CAN NO LONGER REFUSE YOU INSURANCE FOR PRE-EXISTING CONDITION.
And this is only in 4 YEARS. AS I SAID, 8 YEARS OF DAMAGE REQUIRES 8 YEARS OF FIXING.

The reality is we do have 2 certain elements of society that react different when the do not like an outcome. All one has to do is look at the state trial of the officers found not guilty in the beating of Rodney King and the state trial of OJ Simpson found not guilty of murder. While both elements of society did not like the outcome, only one was willing to take it to the point of violence. It reads as if the HOA president in Woodstock is being a prudent individual who has a fiduciary responsibility to the subdivision.

As far as the threat of violence is concerned, I can’t imagine it happening but it has often happened following championship sporting victories — and we didn’t hear about gated communities shutting down.
On the other hand, people should be genuinely pissed at the attempts to suppress the vote with voter registration purges and reduced hours for early voting. Strangely, these extreme measures were not taken in previous elections — and 2000 does provide a precedent for underhanded, Karl Rove inspired, dirty tricks and underhanded dealings.
And, so it goes. . . .and remember, WE GET THE GOVERNMENT WE DESERVE!

So you look at one profane granny and you stereotype her as the voice of a whole race of people? How ignorant can you be? One thing is for sure, you don’t have to go to Fox news to get the nastiness and outright lies coming from the GOP, it is available in all forms and unfolds right before your very eyes. But the lies will not discourage the will of the people, and your suppression and scare tactics will only serve to encourage even those who may have been struggling with the decision. They will come out in full force for president Obama. After it is over many of you GOP heads will try to blame Hurricane Sandy, and since hurricanes are forces of nature and acts of God, I guess you and blame divine intervention. That will go over well with the evangelists. One thing is hopeful, since president Obama will not be running for a third term, we expect the GOP to once again meet on the night of the inauguration, but this time they need to change the agenda to “how can we work with the reelected president on moving the country forward in order to keep our jobs and do what our voters are paying us to do? “

It’s embarrassing to acknowledge that I am the same race as these silly people (and that includes the right wing commentators on this page as well as the sequestered minions of Woodstock). The Michael Moore ad was in somewhat bad taste, but, really, just a silly joke to anyone with any brains. It’s funny that Hannity accuses the Democrats of picking on little things, but has no compunction about attacking this ad as the worst thing that ever happened to humanity. There are real issues in this election and they’re centered on the fact that the Republican party is 100% backing the uber-rich, new aged, robber barons that are almost completely in charge of this country now. The Dems aren’t much better, but they do offer some relief.

R, wrong again, just reverse what you said to you must be an idiot to vote for Romney. The man when in his comfort zone, where you can really be true to yourself, said 47%, nearly half of Americans are victims and will not take responsibility for their own lives so he could care less about them, he would overturn Roe vs Wade by appointing justices who would, he could not support equal pay for women, he would outlaw abortions and put women in jail if they were caught doing so, he said let Detroit go bankrupt with no private sector investors willing to provide the capital needed to keep them from liquidation, he then came back and attempted to take credit for the car industry success (what an idiot), then said president Obama has a war on women (what an idiot), then lied about the president selling Chrysler Jeep to the Italians who were moving Toledo jobs to China when they are actually expanding in China but also adding 1100 jobs in Toledo (what an idiot), put up ads lying about gutting $716 billion from Medicare, the same $716 billion in savings Ryan had in his budget, said he wanted to cut taxes fro everyone including the 1% then came back in the first debate and said he didn’t say it. Does he think the American people are that stupid we cannot remember what he said from one day to the next? Well apparently he is right. Using his salesmanship of selling a false bag of goods, some, like you, have gotten ROMBOOZLED! How can you honestly look at yourself in the mirror after voting for this idiot?

This is an election who wins wins bottom line. I do say there is an bad element in the air and the wind is not blowing the direction you think it is. So stop looking for trouble. just stupid it also shows your mentality.

It’s quite telling that the mindset of many on this blog is that minorities will be the violent group. I seem to remember 4 little girls being blown up in Alabama during voter registration drives and man named Medgar Evers being shot to death outside his home. Do any of you remember the students killed in Mississippi? Political violence is uniquely suited for whites because it’s about intimidation and control. Fact is you’re losing your majority so there’s no need for minorities to become violent. Time is on our side.

If I lived in this community, I would be preparing to file suit against this Bill Stanley character.
He has mischaracterized the neighborhood as an area so crime-ridden that the gates must be locked 24 hours a day. This representation can only diminish property values by casting the community in a bad light.
He should pay each homeowner 10% of their current property values as damages.

“Wow. Just how unruly do they expect Georgia republicans to get when Obama is elected?”
You don’t have to worry about Republicans getting unruly, but you DO have to worry about them wrecking this country (and they will) if they lose. They are so full of their ideological black and white kool aid that they WILL NOT tolerate losing without stonewalling, roadblocking, disrupting and completely wrecking the United States economy just to make a point.
Romney himself “warned” what would happen if Obama is re-elected. You want to see who will destroy this middle class? If Obama is re-elected, it will be the Republicans. And they won’t even flinch while doing it. That’s how extremist they are. Mark my words people.

When saviour Mitt takes office, guess brother Jesse Jackson will have something to protest. He’s been awfully quiet of late. It would have to have been a white conspiracy to get Romeny elected. How anyone could vote for Obama is beyond me. Guess race does play a part in American politics. More Obama equals more socialistic policies.

I’ve heard similar paranoia from many other people here in Jasper, Georgia: People in line at the Kroger supermarket; my neighbors in my subdivision; my landscaper’s friend; on reality TV shows. People seem to think that the apocalypse will be broadcast in your neighborhood tonight. Personally, I think the chance of civil unrest is highly unlikely. From the people I’ve spoken with they seem to think that if there’s any unrest it will not be from the Black people of Georgia but from the disgruntled White people afraid of an Obama victory.

The Voting Rights Act of 1965] is a landmark piece of national legislation that outlawed discriminatory voting practices that had been responsible for the widespread disenfranchisement of African Americans.
Echoing the language of the 15th Amendment, the Act prohibits states from imposing any “voting qualification or prerequisite to voting, or standard, practice, or procedure … to deny or abridge the right of any citizen of the United States to vote on account of race or color.
This law is only 47 years old. Many people voting today remember when it passed.
With this kind of recent history I wonder who should actually be paranoid?
That’s right, whitey. It’s you.

To date, the only people I had ever seen running around in the streets with guns threatening post election violence were the tea partiers. Or do your own Google search on “Guns + photos + Tea Party Rallies”…silly hats, Scooter chairs, violent messaging on signs and guns. And before you think that I am anti-gun, I am not. I am actually a gun owner. I purchased and learned how to use them in reaction to all of the hatred coming from the right. And my post said nothing about looting. I was talking about post election threats of violence from people who did not like the outcome of the election.Even after Bush was given the 2000 election you did not see progressives in the streets threatening violent overthrow of the government and at rallies carrrying guns. For the past 4 years republicans have been saying “We need to take back our country!” From whom?! It is my country too! But just to show you that I am willing to learn something from the “other side”, if Romney wins, I will be sure to write all of my congressmen and heartily encourage them to show the new president the exact same co-operation, courtesy and respect that the republicans have given President Obama these past 4 years. How is that for fair.

Except of course there was nobody running around the streets and the 3 people they showed with guns were doing it according to the law and the police in the video looked really worried about the people running around the streets with their guns. Hatred from the right? Really? That is laughable. I sure hope you write your congressmen because that is a great right we have, or at least until Obama takes it away. Seriously – If like in 2000, the Supreme Court gives the election to either candidate, like they did Bush, yes, I will be incredibly upset. The electoral college is a not a joke, it is a criminal action to disenfranchise the American people. It should be popular vote, period. And yes, hatred from the right. I am a gay American, and I am so incredibly sick and tired of people on the right stating that gay people caused the hurricanes, and that gay people should be put in fenced compounds, and that gay people caused the crash of hetero marriage (how exactly do we cause straight people to divorce?) and the death penalty should be re-instated for being gay. So yes, I have guns to protect myself from the crazies on the right. And how exactly is Obama taking away the right to write your congressman.
