What a sharp-tongued Joe Lowery said over the weekend

Updated with new video at 2:55 p.m.: We told you last night about the radio ads put out by an anti-Amendment One group, declaring that Tuesday’s ballot issue on charter schools was an effort to recreate an educational system that separates black and white students.

Several of the 60-second spots featured the Rev. Joseph Lowery, the 91-year-old civil rights figure. “Don’t let them resegregate our schools,” Lowery says in the ads.

As it turns out, the sharp-tongued Lowery was already an Internet topic on Wednesday – but not for dipping into the charter school debate. Rather, it was for comments made over the weekend in Monroe County, as part of a Southern Christian Leadership Conference trek across the state to encourage support for President Barack Obama.

Former Atlanta mayor Andrew Young was there, too. But it was Lowery — the same fellow who gave the benediction at Obama’s 2009 inauguration — who raised eyebrows. Lowery says he’s being pilloried for a joke about white folk that he’s told hundreds of times from the stump — which the reporter apparently didn’t recognize for its humor.

Here’s the report from Diane Glidewell and the Monroe County Reporter, the local weekly:

Lowery said Obama lost Georgia by 200,000 votes in 2008 while 390,000 black folks in Georgia did not vote.

“I don’t know what kind of a n—– wouldn’t vote with a black man running,” said Lowery. “All that he did with the stimulus was genius. Nobody intelligent would risk this country with Romney.”

Lowery praised Obama’s commitment to the poor and said politicians should quit saying ‘middle class’ and go ahead and say ‘poor.’ Then he urged individuals to look at their own character and conduct.

“We’ve turned our backs on the faith,” said Lowery. “America is going to hell in a hand basket. We need to straighten up so God can use us.”

Lowery said that when he was a young militant, he used to say all white folks were going to hell. Then he mellowed and just said most of them were. Now, he said, he is back to where he was.

“I’m frightened by the level of hatred and bitterness coming out in this election,” said Lowery.

Forsyth Mayor John Howard, a member of St. James who opened Saturday’s program, said he was “pretty shocked” by Lowery’s comments. He said if a speaker had made the same comments about black people, he would have gotten up and left.

Immediately after their joint appearance in Forsyth, Ga., Lowery and Young headed over to Macon. Lowery didn’t say exactly the same thing, but poke through this video of the Macon event sent over by Maynard Eaton, national communications director for the SCLC.

The speech before the Georgia Association of Black Elected Officials, founded by state Rep. Tyrone Brooks, was recorded by videographer Clyde Bradley, and might leave you with a different impression. Lowery’s every bit as hard on black folk as he is white folk:

Aren’t there better adjectives than “sharp-tongued” to describe these comments by an otherwise respectable Joseph Lowery?

Jeesh people! Joe Lowery is 90+ years old — he probably doesn’t even REMEMBER that much of the 60’s anymore.

“All that he did with the stimulus was genius”….I suppose math wasn’t Joe’s strong suit.

“I’m frightened by the level of hatred and bitterness coming out in this election” he says, while going back to the belief that all white folks were going to hell. I suppose he better not look in the mirror and scare himself. People like Lowery are part of the problem of “hatred and bitterness”, regardless of what they did in a past life.

Also in respect to the “white people are evil/going to hell claim” — Joe lived during a time when he was beaten and threatened with lynching for even attempting to drink at a “white’s only” fountain. He’s probably never left that era.

Same as my aunt — one of those “whites” who COULD drink from the fountain. she’s a little younger than Joe; but she does the same thing and says just about the same things as Joe does.

that generation is old and dying out — it’s time to let these ideals die out with them. We are stronger together than we are apart.

Deal with it.

Another quick point about Joe’s NOT supporting Charter Schools. He’s basing his information on what happened in Wake County, NC. with the school board and their efforts to resegregrate their area.

You can find the story here:

“Lowery said Obama lost Georgia by 200,000 votes in 2008 while 390,000 black folks in Georgia did not vote.”

The old race-baiter conveniently forgot that Obama was elected by a combination of blacks and dumb-azz whites. I expect most blacks will vote Obama again based solely on the color of his skin (racist), but hope that the whites have learned the extreme error of their ways.

Before you even go there, I couldn’t care less about the color of the president’s skin IF he is a good president. The lying, divisive, big-spending and big-borrowing Obama is NOT a good president and should be replaced.

@cc you are and always have been a bigot. Nothing you say about race is relevant. ONE “black man” (he’s actually half white) runs for President and black people vote for him and all the bigots can say is “they are only voting for him cause he’s black”. What about all the WHITE MEN that we have voted for? The logic in your argument is ignorance. You and your ilk aren’t talking about the nearly 90% of Mormons who are voting for Romney cause he’s Mormon or the whites who are voting for him cause he’s WHITE!!! Your argument is pure ignorance!

“there is vitriol towards this President”

Are you suggesting that Obama hasn’t earned the “vitriol”?

You might begin by asking the four Americans killed in Benghazi if they have any vitriolic feelings toward Obama and his administration . . . except they can’t answer, can they?

You can follow up and ask the unborn Americans about the $6+ trillion he has added to the national debt if they have any vitriolic feelings, but they can’t answer yet. Let’s just let that be a little “surprise” for them!

I can go on and on . . .

(Although I’m sure you already do) listen to talk radio, especially the ‘one acceptable opinion’ station here in Atlanta.
It has covered nothing but vitriol against the President since he was just a candidate. And, they shamelessly promoted a no-chance candidate in the primaries, which eliminated any sort of neutrality they might have pretended to harbor.

Personally, I would like to see the ‘Fairness Doctrine’ and the ‘equal time rule’ re-instituted as soon as possible, so at least the morons who get their approved opinion from talk radio could find out theirs is really a minority view.

Dr. Lowery needs to check his facts on segregation. Half the charter school students in Georgia are Title 1 and there are more African American than White students in ouer charter schools. When you can’t make a legitimate argument, then play the race card. Sad.

How about calling the man by his name. It is not Joe. It is Rev. Joseph Lowery. And considering all he and Andrew Young went through in their lives, who better to recognize racism and racists. Just like people are entitled to post their opinions on here, Mr. Lowery has a right to his opinions also. It took electing a black man as President to bring out what has been in peoples hearts all along. Sorry people if you dont want to face the facts. I guess things would be fine if black folks would just be quiet like blacks did during slavery and Jim Crow. I always find it interesting people from the group who instituted one of the gravest crimes in this country try to put the racist label on people because they speak up. Sorry Madge the era never died out, it just took another form. And Lester you can get your axe handle out the closet now but dont be surprised if some else has one too.

All this rhetoric means nothing. The Charter amendment is about who controls. Is it going to be local control or state control. MSNBC goes to the race card daily and with passion. Every word spoken by Republican’s or Fox is racist according to them. Mormon’s are racists according to them. Anybody black who is a Republican or Conservative is an ignorant sellout. Christian Evangelicals are racist according to them. Pro-lifers are racist and anti-women according to them. If you’re not a racist you’re a far-right nutcase fringe lunatic. If you’re a Constitutionalist you’re a racist. If you’re a Tea Party member you’re a racist. If you watch Fox you’re a racist. Conservative talk radio hosts and listener’s are racist according to them. Can someone please tell me one racist comment they have ever heard out of the mouth of any Conservative or Republican during this campaign? Oh I forgot, MSNBC and and the media have gone to calling any random description about any random topic spoken by any of the above as “code” for racism. “It’s Monday” is code for whatever MSNBC says is racism cloaked in normal everyday dialogue. Rev. Lowery at 90 is still very cogent and is not confused. He wants to scare us into thinking the 1930’s and 40’s are on the way back. It shows he sees and so do many Democrats, the world through that period. So does Joe Biden, who says Republicans are going to put ya’ll back in chains. Disgraceful Joe. Disgraceful Rev. Lowery.

I’m white…I was born and have lived almost 70 years in this state…and believe me when I tell you the prejudice toward blacks is as bad now as i can remember. Of course it was worse during the days labeled ‘Jim Crow’, and worse still when ‘white folks’ bragged about lynching ‘uppity n*******’, but to me Joseph Lowery is right. Way too many of my Republican friends have become so openly cynical about anyone ‘other’ than themselves, and even when you debunk, with facts, every argument they present – to the point that they finally say, I don’t care cause it’s the thought that counts – I’m left with only one conclusion. They are driven by either greed, prejudice or both…and only the concept of ‘cognitive dissonance’ keeps them from admitting it.

Kolob is a belief in the Mormon religion. Main stream or not. They believe in a residence closer to God in the stars. As a Bishop of the LDS church Romney taught this doctrine or he would have been excommunicated.

Funny how President Barack Obama’s religion thoughts and beliefs are scrutinized and Romney’s beliefs and practices of his religion are swept under the rug. LDS sects believe in poligamy and practice it to this day. Romney’s grand parents ran to Mexico because of it where his father was born. Hell up to recently Billy Graham called Mormonism a cult.

If anything, he’s racist against his own people because there is big money in crying racism to everything and in inciting activists to anger over lies. Those kind of ‘honorable leaders’ have made careers out of mugging and suing companies and distorting the truth. If anything, they are keeping their own people down by preaching the gospel of personal entitlement.
