Hurricane Sandy blows Bloomberg into Obama’s camp

Hurricane Sandy and climate change have blown New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, a fence-straddling independent, into President Barack Obama’s camp. From his just-published op-ed:

The devastation that Hurricane Sandy brought to New York City and much of the Northeast — in lost lives, lost homes and lost business — brought the stakes of Tuesday’s presidential election into sharp relief.

The floods and fires that swept through our city left a path of destruction that will require years of recovery and rebuilding work. And in the short term, our subway system remains partially shut down, and many city residents and businesses still have no power. In just 14 months, two hurricanes have forced us to evacuate neighborhoods — something our city government had never done before. If this is a trend, it is simply not sustainable.

Our climate is changing. And while the increase in extreme weather we have experienced in New York City and around the world may or may not be the result of it, the risk that it might be — given this week’s devastation — should compel all elected leaders to take immediate action.

Bloomberg says he might have voted for the Mitt Romney of earlier years:

I believe Mitt Romney is a good and decent man, and he would bring valuable business experience to the Oval Office. He understands that America was built on the promise of equal opportunity, not equal results. In the past he has also taken sensible positions on immigration, illegal guns, abortion rights and health care. But he has reversed course on all of them, and is even running against the health-care model he signed into law in Massachusetts.

If the 1994 or 2003 version of Mitt Romney were running for president, I may well have voted for him because, like so many other independents, I have found the past four years to be, in a word, disappointing.

This should surprise no one. With the Obama Admin perfecting the process of picking and choosing winners and losers for almost 4 years what kind of an idiot mayor or governor would do anything to be on their bad side when so much help is needed?

Too bad… if Romney was brave enough to be himself he probably would have done better. A candidate with sensible positions on the concerns listed above along with good business sense would have been a sure thing.

The Mitt Romney of earlier years is no different than the Mitt Romney of today. He did then, and does now, assume whatever guise he deems expedient for the time and place.

Former Republican Bloomberg didn’t really leave the party, it left him — and Lincoln Chafee, Chuck Hagel, Arlen Specter, Richard Lugar, Olympia Snowe; anyone and everyone with an iota of concern for the commonweal.

Bloomberg’s endorsement says more about the GOP and Romney than it does about Obama. When you add the write up from The Economist, the opinion seems to be more about disappointment in Romney than it does about having faith in Obama.

http://www.economist.com/news/leaders/21565623-america-could-do-better-barack-obama-sadly-mitt-romney-does-not-fit-bill-which-one

Many of The Economist’s readers, especially those who run businesses in America, may well conclude that nothing could be worse than another four years of Mr Obama. We beg to differ. For all his businesslike intentions, Mr Romney has an economic plan that works only if you don’t believe most of what he says. That is not a convincing pitch for a chief executive. And for all his shortcomings, Mr Obama has dragged America’s economy back from the brink of disaster, and has made a decent fist of foreign policy. So this newspaper would stick with the devil it knows, and re-elect him.

To those like ‘Mark’…get over the Clinton affair on focus on some real issues relevant to this race. On the deficit issue, don’t forget that a large portion of the debt of the last four years is the result of the Bush tax cuts, not just the increased stimulus spending. There is plenty to do and ideas from all sides will be needed to solve our pressing problems. Whether Romney or Obama is elected Tuesday, we need to get serious and realistic economic, environmental, military, and social safety net (entitlement) issues moving forward. Let’s leave the side bar comments on the personal lives of others where it belongs…outside of the debate of serious people.

I have never been a fan of Gov. Christie, but one thing became patently clear to me when I heard his and the president’s remarks about working together: I am beyond nauseated with the bickering of the Republicans. How refreshing to see two adults who do not share the same political views but are trying to work together for the common good. That is precisely what has been missing the last four years.

Democrats are not angels, but Republicans have played games with people’s lives only for the goal to see this presidency fail. Every adult should point to them and tell their children how not to look up to these folks. Gov. Christie is now under fire from his own party for daring to work with a democratic president. These people are sick and if voters don’t turn them out next Tuesday, we will all suffer the next four years.

It certainly does not take a professional pundit to realize that kissing the butt of the administration that holds the purse-strings for recovery of a flooded, damaged city is all part of the game of politics. Remember how they kissed Bush’s butt when the recovery after 9-11 was taking place? Ya do what ya gotta do to get things done. Pure and simple politics. Guilliani left office and Bloomberg took his place in line…..do the math…could NYC rebuild and revitalize without outside help? It is all part of the game.

Interesting take on Bloomberg from my fellow readers.

I was listening to Limbaugh today and got to thinking about him and his decades long push for the growth and spread of conservatism.

Limbaugh began his national show in 1988. Since then this man pushing for “conservative” candidates has seen a moderates George H W Bush and George W Bush become president along with more liberal Bill Clinton and Barack Obama. That is 6 presidential race cycles and Limbaugh is 0 for 6 as far as having a conservative in the White House.

And this year we ended up with a liberal Barack Obama and a “moved way to the left” liberal Mitt Romney from which to choose. Which makes Limbaugh 0 for 7.

And the fact that the Romney campaign felt it necessary to move their candidate from right of center to left of center starting the first week of October says more about the true state of conservative thought in this country than any preaching by Limbaugh, Hannity and their like.

The United States is a rather liberal country. I do not like it. But that’s the way it is.

Does Bloomberg think Obama has control over hurricanes? Actually, Sandy was a very mild hurricane that just happened to hit a low-lying, highly developed and populated area. If it had hit the Outter Banks of North Carolina, lt would hardly been noticed. Also, dense development and population of barrier islands is stupid. These sandy strips of “land” were created by previous storms and served to :break” the force of storm activity on the mainland. I guess taxpayers will be expected to bring out the bulldozers and “restore” these clumps of sand fot high dollar re-development.

Bloomberg and Christie recognize true leadership, not sound bites. Rhomney is blowing hot air and will say anything to get elected. Rhomney and Ryan are puppets of big buisiness and the religious right. As to Fayes response, Sandy hitting the Outer Banks of NC would effect both Tidewater, Virginia , Richmond, and Washington DC. There was an article in the Washington Post today as to a simular scenario, with Sandy making landfall in Virginia Beach. The Outer Banks were hit hard by the storm and NC 12, replaced after Irene, was destroyed again. However, I do agree that the barrier islands should NOT be populated. These islands are a natural storm break and development undermines their natural function. Wetlands decline attributed to the devistation wrought by hurricane Katrina on the gulf coast. These barrier islands are habitats for waterfowl, fish, and crustations. I grew up on the Chesapeake Bay and would hate to see these habitats destroyed

Spending his life “lying for the Lord,” as his “formerly” racist sex cult’s bizarre theology requires when speaking with “outsiders” (i.e. normal, healthy Americans), Romney has no “self” to be, hence hasn’t the ability to be “himself.” He is a Mammon-worshipping, satanic zombie…nothing more.

America is being sifted…G-d is watching each of us.

1. Newt Gingrich as Secretary of State
2. Herman Cain as Commerce Secretary
3. Mark Sanford as Transportation Secretary
4. Rick Santorum as Ambassador to the Vatican
5. John Ensign as Treasury Secretary
6. Todd Aiken as Secretary of Health and Human Services
7. Rudy Guliani as FBI Director

That’s enough for me to vote for Obama.

One thing for sure is that Romney won’t need a teleprompter to give a speech. All he will have to do is hold up his finger and see which way the wind is blowing and the words will follow.

Only four days left before the end of the leftists’ dreams!

I can hardly wait!

It will be President-Elect Romney after Tuesday, and President Romney in January, 2013.

People are eating out of dumpsters in Staten Island. Thugs are looting homes and businesses. Bloomberg has ordered a couple of dozen of The Royal Flush portapotties installed along the marathon route by Sunday morning and has given advice to NY marathon runners that they will make better time if they attend to their *business* before the run.So what we have here is merely one of the 1% endorsing the guy who will soon be another one of the 1%.

mehlman, lest you forget: There will most likely also be a nod to Paul “The Vulture” Singer, Donald Trump, one or more Koch, John Bolten and Dan Senior, a Sununu, Phyllis Schlafly, Ralph Reed, and many of the unsavory Republican office holders who lose their elections, like say Reps. Joe Walsh and Allen West. And, as a two-faced President will require two brains, there will be Karl Rove and Grover Norquist. Not to mention that the Bradley and Heritage Foundations, etc. will disgorge their junk scientists and freak economists into every agency of government.

Bloomberg is not a “fence straddling independent.” Where have you been, Bloomberg is a flat out northeastern liberal.

As others above I fail to see the connect in this article between Sandy and Bloomberg’s presidential vote. But if reading between the lines one concludes that it is because of all the media attention to the NYC area that the president has brought these last few days, and the publicly hyped promises for help that Obama has pledged, my skeptism says “let’s wait and see what’s delivered – not what’s promised to a swing state a week before the elections.”

A vote for any Republican anywhere in any state is a vote for the do nothing Tea Party since all Republicans in Washington vote in lockstep with Tea Party Bachman, Atkins, Broun,Ryan, West, King, Wilson, Walsh, and Senate Filibuster Mcconnell.

You can go to c span to check bills, budgets, Rommey’s video, 5/14/12, 47% who do not pay taxes consider themselves victims and entitled to food stamps, school lunches and healthcare fromgovernment.
26% of 47% were white guys who are unemployed/earn low salaries as well as veterans, seniors, disabled etc. 41% of Georgians fit this 47% and if you do not today, you could tommorrow if you have a heart attack or lose your job.
Rommey pays less than 14% capital gains tax on millions on carried interest he earns on investments in billions in China and Cayman Islands.

Rommey/his wealthy buddies take the Republican tax cuts but do not create jobs In USA.

Why do you think wealthy are giving millions in undisclosed/disclosed donations to groups/super pacs like Crossroads GPS/Rove, U. s. Chamber of Commerce[undiscloed;;American Crossroads /rove, American Prosperity/koch bros, Freedom Works, reed , Norquist and 600 + more.
75% of money is being bent to tell lies/half-truths against democrats, check records yourself.

Why is wealthy trying to buy your votes for Republicans, they like tax cuts and so much more.

All Republicans in Senate and House voted for Ryan Budget 2011 and Rommey said he would sign it. It would be law today. Check c-span for yourself. The budget turned medicare into voucher which would cost seniors about 6,000 more, cut 17 billion from veterans programs when thier numbers have increased from Iraq/Afgan war, there are backlogs at veterans administration because they did not increase budget to take care of veterans they sent to war. Cut 35% from medicaid which covers nursing home care for seniors/disabled, just when senior population is increasing. Medicaid also pays for healthcare for children of unemployed/low paid workers.[Wealthy/Rommey destroyed good paying manufacturing jobs by hiring workers overseas/china for $1.00 an hour/no health insurance.]. The budget cut food programs, education, research. but gave about 4.8/5 trillion in tax cuts for wealthy.
you can google but best source is c span because you can check their votes, billls, Repub senate blocked jobs bill for veterans, a bill which took tax-break from corp. who move job overseas and give to companies who hire here. There were 260 filibusters by Senator tea party filibuster Mcconnell and his republicans voting in lockstep.

Since obama never really stopped campaigning from the time he took office in 2009; if he does win, do we even know if he can lead?

Neither Galloway nor the rest of the liberal press will talk about the Benghazi screw-up and subsequent cover-up, at least not until after the election. Obama lied, people died. The liberal press in the US is an embarrassment.

Road, what conservative were you listening to, seeing what is going on will not hurt Romney ? If Global warming was the cause of Sandy, who does Bloomberg blame for the 6 hurricanes that hit the area in the 50’s ? We are now told to expect a Sandy every year because of global warming. Al gore told us that Katrina was the new norm. Do these people care about how often they are wrong ?

@Whirled, Bush/Cheney lied and told the world that there were WMDs in Iraq when they knew that there were not, and thousands upon thousands of people have died and continue to die. The Benghazi situation is such a cypher compared to the Bush/Cheney national disgrace, and your harping on such a minor and unsubstantiated issue only serves to bring the far larger lie and its consequences back to mind. You do your side a disservice both in pointing your outraged finger at this trumped-up issue and in recalling the far bigger, more documented and more egregious lie of the last Republican president.

whirled,
If you paid attention to anything other than wrong-wing-rant-media, you would see just how silly your position is.

I’m just glad that Mayor Bloomberg could see to do the right thing, even if it did take a massive, climate induced catastrophe to bring him to the table!

If they were wrong that might be worth considering, but they clearly are not.
All of the predicted consequences of unchecked increases of atmospheric CO2 are coming to pass as the levels continue to increase.

Bloomberg needs to get the National GUard into NY and get the city under control. Its funny people are comparing the response time to Katrina…..haahaaahha
It took FEMA 4 days just to realize New orleans even existed…
