Hurricane Sandy and climate change have blown New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, a fence-straddling independent, into President Barack Obama’s camp. From his just-published op-ed:
The devastation that Hurricane Sandy brought to New York City and much of the Northeast — in lost lives, lost homes and lost business — brought the stakes of Tuesday’s presidential election into sharp relief.
The floods and fires that swept through our city left a path of destruction that will require years of recovery and rebuilding work. And in the short term, our subway system remains partially shut down, and many city residents and businesses still have no power. In just 14 months, two hurricanes have forced us to evacuate neighborhoods — something our city government had never done before. If this is a trend, it is simply not sustainable.
Our climate is changing. And while the increase in extreme weather we have experienced in New York City and around the world may or may not be the result of it, the risk that it might be — given this week’s devastation — should compel all elected leaders to take immediate action.
Bloomberg says he might have voted for the Mitt Romney of earlier years:
I believe Mitt Romney is a good and decent man, and he would bring valuable business experience to the Oval Office. He understands that America was built on the promise of equal opportunity, not equal results. In the past he has also taken sensible positions on immigration, illegal guns, abortion rights and health care. But he has reversed course on all of them, and is even running against the health-care model he signed into law in Massachusetts.
If the 1994 or 2003 version of Mitt Romney were running for president, I may well have voted for him because, like so many other independents, I have found the past four years to be, in a word, disappointing.

just me and Debbie are correct. I proudly cast my first vote for President for Ronald Reagan. But today’s extremist Republicans, who say things like:
Obama’s involvement in “Fast and Furious”, Benghazi, the Russian “Secret Deal” and the Iranian connection attempt. I wouldn’t count on it, though, because communists are very committed and they rarely confess.
must be defeated. And they will be. Had Romney consistently expressed his moderatley conservative views, he’d likely win next Tuesday. Instead he chose to kowtow to the whacakdoodles; as a result, he’ll lose.

The GOP is no longer the GOP. They are now the POG (Party of God). That is why I, as a lifelong Republican, am now an independent! I will not a party that’s main goal is to force their religious views on others! The parade of losers coming out of that party since George Bush Sr. is shocking. What a bunch of losers my ex party has become.

cc, you ought to take your certitude to Intrade and help out those who have believed like you that Mr. Romney will win. Poor people, they have been trying to dump their shares today from $3.13 to $3.44, and there are just not any buyers. Tonight, it looks like they’ve pulled the big “sells” in frustration, and the market is locking-up for good. cc, they need you; the market needs you — and you can triple your investment in a mere six days. Moreover, with Intrade you can boast of an offshore account just like your champion.

Bloomberg and Christie recognize true leadership, not sound bites. Rhomney is blowing hot air and will say anything to get elected. Rhomney and Ryan are puppets of big buisiness and the religious right. As to Fayes response, Sandy hitting the Outer Banks of NC would effect both Tidewater, Virginia , Richmond, and Washington DC. There was an article in the Washington Post today as to a simular scenario, with Sandy making landfall in Virginia Beach. The Outer Banks were hit hard by the storm and NC 12, replaced after Irene, was destroyed again. However, I do agree that the barrier islands should NOT be populated. These islands are a natural storm break and development undermines their natural function. Wetlands decline attributed to the devistation wrought by hurricane Katrina on the gulf coast. These barrier islands are habitats for waterfowl, fish, and crustations. I grew up on the Chesapeake Bay and would hate to see these habitats destroyed

The parable of Sodom and Gamorrah (sp, i’m tirred) – the Christians teach the reason God punished the townspeople was b/c of their sinning ways of self pleasure. The Jews teach the reason God punished the townspeople was b/c they turned their backs on strangers in need.
Romney and the GOP want to cut FEMA b/c the national government helping the helpless is immoral.
Fine state of Christian charity.
Christie may be kissing the ring of the $$, but that’s his elected job and sworn duty – save his people and save his state. You fine GOP christians would rather him turn the money and assistance down? Turn his back on strangers in need?

Climate, Women’s choice, energy independence. Add these to Krugman’s take: “If President Obama is re-elected, health care coverage will expand dramatically, taxes on the wealthy will go up and Wall Street will face tougher regulation. If Mitt Romney wins instead, health coverage will shrink substantially, taxes on the wealthy will fall to levels not seen in 80 years and financial regulation will be rolled back.”
Then, choose.

People are eating out of dumpsters in Staten Island. Thugs are looting homes and businesses. Bloomberg has ordered a couple of dozen of The Royal Flush portapotties installed along the marathon route by Sunday morning and has given advice to NY marathon runners that they will make better time if they attend to their *business* before the run.So what we have here is merely one of the 1% endorsing the guy who will soon be another one of the 1%.

As others above I fail to see the connect in this article between Sandy and Bloomberg’s presidential vote. But if reading between the lines one concludes that it is because of all the media attention to the NYC area that the president has brought these last few days, and the publicly hyped promises for help that Obama has pledged, my skeptism says “let’s wait and see what’s delivered – not what’s promised to a swing state a week before the elections.”

A vote for any Republican anywhere in any state is a vote for the do nothing Tea Party since all Republicans in Washington vote in lockstep with Tea Party Bachman, Atkins, Broun,Ryan, West, King, Wilson, Walsh, and Senate Filibuster Mcconnell.
You can go to c span to check bills, budgets, Rommey’s video, 5/14/12, 47% who do not pay taxes consider themselves victims and entitled to food stamps, school lunches and healthcare fromgovernment.
26% of 47% were white guys who are unemployed/earn low salaries as well as veterans, seniors, disabled etc. 41% of Georgians fit this 47% and if you do not today, you could tommorrow if you have a heart attack or lose your job.
Rommey pays less than 14% capital gains tax on millions on carried interest he earns on investments in billions in China and Cayman Islands.
Rommey/his wealthy buddies take the Republican tax cuts but do not create jobs In USA.
Why do you think wealthy are giving millions in undisclosed/disclosed donations to groups/super pacs like Crossroads GPS/Rove, U. s. Chamber of Commerce[undiscloed;;American Crossroads /rove, American Prosperity/koch bros, Freedom Works, reed , Norquist and 600 + more.
75% of money is being bent to tell lies/half-truths against democrats, check records yourself.
Why is wealthy trying to buy your votes for Republicans, they like tax cuts and so much more.
All Republicans in Senate and House voted for Ryan Budget 2011 and Rommey said he would sign it. It would be law today. Check c-span for yourself. The budget turned medicare into voucher which would cost seniors about 6,000 more, cut 17 billion from veterans programs when thier numbers have increased from Iraq/Afgan war, there are backlogs at veterans administration because they did not increase budget to take care of veterans they sent to war. Cut 35% from medicaid which covers nursing home care for seniors/disabled, just when senior population is increasing. Medicaid also pays for healthcare for children of unemployed/low paid workers.[Wealthy/Rommey destroyed good paying manufacturing jobs by hiring workers overseas/china for $1.00 an hour/no health insurance.]. The budget cut food programs, education, research. but gave about 4.8/5 trillion in tax cuts for wealthy.
you can google but best source is c span because you can check their votes, billls, Repub senate blocked jobs bill for veterans, a bill which took tax-break from corp. who move job overseas and give to companies who hire here. There were 260 filibusters by Senator tea party filibuster Mcconnell and his republicans voting in lockstep.

If Global warming was the cause of Sandy, who does Bloomberg blame for the 6 hurricanes that hit the area in the 50’s ? We are now told to expect a Sandy every year because of global warming. @Whirled, Bush/Cheney lied and told the world that there were WMDs in Iraq when they knew that there were not, and thousands upon thousands of people have died and continue to die. The Benghazi situation is such a cypher compared to the Bush/Cheney national disgrace, and your harping on such a minor and unsubstantiated issue only serves to bring the far larger lie and its consequences back to mind. You do your side a disservice both in pointing your outraged finger at this trumped-up issue and in recalling the far bigger, more documented and more egregious lie of the last Republican president.
