Republicans rallying behind an Atlanta Democrat?

This morning, we told you that state Rep. Scott Holcomb, D-Atlanta, was leaning more and more on that yanked video by his GOP opponent, Chris Boedeker, to raise questions among Republicans.

The 30-second spot never made it to TV – so far as we know – but has had a half-life on the Internet. In it, Boedeker edited video of Holcomb at the well of the House to make it seem that Holcomb was confessing to drug use while in the U.S. Army.

As the weekend began, Holcomb received this Tweeted endorsement from Erick Erickson of Redstate.com:

“I’m proud to support Democrat Scott Holcomb for re-election in the Georgia State House. Better an honest Democrat than a lying fool.”

But more GOP shoes were dropping even as we wrote that. Over at Todd Rehm’s Georgia Pundit, Boedeker’s Republican primary opponent, gynecologist Carla Roberts, this morning condemned the fellow she said had falsely painted her as an abortionist who’d left her family.

She didn’t actually endorse Holcomb, if you read her post carefully, but she may not have needed to. A taste:

I have not uttered a word about Mr. Boedeker after the Republican voters in our district chose him as their nominee. Respecting the choice of the voters is why this country was founded. Indeed, after my exit, I would have preferred to stay silent rather than re-hash my defeat and naivete.

But Mr. Boedeker’s deplorable attempt to smear the reputation of a man who put his life on the line to protect American citizens has made my continued silence impossible. I believe it’s my duty, as an American, and as a Republican, to call out shameful behavior when I see it –especially from members of my own political party.

Updated at 2:45 p.m.: I sent Roberts an e-mail wondering if her statement was an endorsement of Holcomb. Here’s her reply:

“I am not endorsing Rep Scott Holcomb. It would be hard for me to vote for Mr. Boedeker to represent my district and my state. I may have to leave that ballot choice blank on Nov 6, 2012.”

This isn’t to say that Boedeker hasn’t been sinned against. Over at Get Schooled, my AJC colleague Maureen Downey says someone has created a fake Twitter account using Boedeker’s name. One fake Tweet:

A lunch lady with a textbook and a photocopier could replace any teacher.

It’s rough out there, people.

We’ll then, maybe it’s possible someone in a fake fat suit was responsible for all those phony miles Don Balfour charged to the state taxpayers?

“….. to call out shameful behavior when I see it – especially from members of my own party.”

If more people took this attitude and acted on it, we would have a better state and nation. Good for Carla Roberts and the other Republicans that are policing themselves.

For the GOP’ers that aren’t why not?

Something else for which we can thank former Senator mitch sebaugh.
If he had had the good sense not to pair the 81st and the 82nd, mr. boat-anchor
wouldn’t have even been on the ballot.

Democrats setting up fake twitter accounts for a GOP candidate. That is low – even for you. I hope Holcomb gets his butt kicked good on Tuesday for all of this crazy behavior. Oh – and while you are at it Scott – why don’t you give back the contributions you got from your buddies over at JP Turner after they got their hands slapped (again) by the S.E.C..

“For the GOP’ers that aren’t why not?”

This isn’t a Republican OR a Democrat thing. This is something that all responsible people should do whenever the situation warrants such action, regardless of party affiliation.

And what should one consider the group of republicans intent on defending this scurrilous behavior?

Chris Boedeker is what is wrong with politics – GOP or Democrat. I am sad that my fellow Republicans and Libertarians could even think of voting for this guy. I am disgusted that the GA GOP would prop this guy up for an elected seat. He does not come across intelligently, his lies and robocalls show he has zero integrity (he and his team continue to break federal FCC law) and he is completely ill-prepared to represent us on the DeKalb delegation.

If he wins, I have two things to say – myopic, party-line voting will continue to produce worthless candidates such as Boedeker AND I hope they televise his first appearance with the DeKalb Delegation! I would love to watch Mosby, Coach, and MMO give him the real view of DeKalb politics. Jacobs can hold his own most of the time, but this guy will completely embarrass the former 82nd and our new 81st.

That said, the intelligent voters of both parties have come out to support Holcomb, who represents our schools and communities well and is a thoughtful moderate. Most of all he is respectful and has unquestionable integrity.

Well that doesn’t jive with Bookman’s perpetual presentation of republicans as all things partisan.

You put a name on them: I’m sure you’ve got one in mind.

I do not endorse anyone who supports this type activity, either overtly or simply by remaining silent.
Of course, I am not privy, nor is anyone else blogging here, to whatever behind-the-scenes activity may be occuring regarding this incident with reference to the Republican Party’s activities against the offender.

Chris Boedecker is working straight from the Republican playbook so I’m not that impressed that a couple of them seem to have some integrity and have refused to endorse his shenanigans. There is more to their calling him out than shame about the way he is running his campaign, you can count on that. We know GOPers don’t have any shame.

Lost in all of this is that Holcomb is a knee-jerk, Obama-doting liberal who has failed to represent his district, except for an extreme minority of liberals. The ad was crap. Settled.

Now let’s move on to whether Holcomb should be rewarded with returning to the House given his failure to do ANYTHING over the last two years but vote with the liberal wing of the liberal House Dems. He is completely ineffective and will remain that way if he gets back there. It’s time for a change.

Anyone who pays attention to the nonsense that drivels forth from Eric Erickson should take his endorsement as the kiss of death.

Boedeker is the worst candidate that the GOP has fielded since Jill Chambers. It must be the water in that district. He actually has her as his GOTV person, how inspiring. There are some major GOP heavy hitters listed on his campaign disclosures. More telling are the GOP Senate and House members who are not.
