Your daily jolt: Black voters in Georgia casting ballots at higher rate than ‘08

Even without any major statewide candidate contests to encourage turnout, African-American voters in Georgia are on track to cast a larger share of the presidential vote than in 2008, according to the latest figures from the secretary of state’s office.

As of today, 780,545 Georgia voters have cast their ballots for the Nov. 6 election. Of those, 33 percent have been African-American.

In 2008, when drawn to the polls by the prospect of electing the nation’s first black president, African-Americans cast 30 percent of 3.9 million votes in Georgia.

The question is whether this year’s participation statistic will shrink between now and Tuesday week. Even if it drops slightly, it could be taken as a sign that President Barack Obama’s political base remains enthusiastic, and hasn’t been discouraged by the ups and downs of October.

You also have to wonder what heavy black turnout would mean for Georgia’s charter school measure.

***
Here’s that “first time” ad from the Barack Obama campaign – clearly aimed at the young and virginal – that everyone’s talking about:

***
Those polls that show the presidential campaign to be a squeaker? Newt Gingrich doesn’t believe them. From Politico.com:

“I believe the minimum result will be 53-47 Romney, over 300 electoral votes, and the Republicans will pick up the Senate,” the former House speaker said Thursday night on Fox News’s “On the Record with Greta Van Susteren.”

***
Earlier this week, during an interview in Iowa, President Barack Obama predicted that, after the election was done, Washington would come together and create that “grand bargain” to address a $16 trillion federal debt and avoid the automatic tax hikes and spending cuts set to go into effect at the close of the year.

On Thursday, speaking Republican rather than Democrat, U.S. Sen. Johnny Isakson said much the same thing:

Said Georgia’s junior senator:

”I think we’ll postpone the ‘fiscal cliff’ from the end of this year, into next year, with certain speed-bumps and thresholds that Congress must perform on before we get there. We’ve got a crisis ahead of us. It’s got to be solved, it’s got to be a comprehensive solution, which is going to take pushing it into next year. But we need a deadline to make sure Congress faces the music on spending, on entitlements and on taxes….”

It was pointed out that sequestration would cost Georgia 24,000 jobs. Said Isakson:

”Most of those jobs are in Marietta, Ga., where I live, at Lockheed-Martin. So I know a lot about what you’re talking about. Automatic sequestration, across-the-board at the Department of Defense would be disastrous. Congress ought to be doing its jobs. We ought to be finding efficiencies that make sense.”

***
Gwinnett County Superior Court Judge K. Dawson Jackson on Thursday dismissed a second lawsuit against opponents of the Nov. 6 ballot measure on charter schools. See the details here.

Plaintiffs had accused the Gwinnett school board and the Georgia School Board Association of improperly using taxpayer resources to campaign against the measure.

In tossing the request for court intervention, Jackson made a finding worth reading. He said the lawsuit qualified as a SLAPP action. That’s a “strategic lawsuit against public participation” – often used by developers to freeze civilian opponents in zoning cases and such.

Lawson invoked the state’s anti-SLAPP statute:

The General Assembly of Georgia has recognized that “it is in the public interest to encourage participation by the citizens of Georgia in matters of public significance through the exercise of their constitutional rights of freedom of speech and the right to petition government for redress of grievances.

“The General Assembly of Georgia further finds and declares that the valid exercise of the constitutional rights of freedom of speech and the right to petition government for a redress of grievances should not be chilled through abuse of the judicial process.”

***
Over at WABE (90.1FM), Rose Scott reports that state Rep. Edward Lindsey, R-Atlanta, will introduce legislation to give parents more control over all public schools – including the right to change the administration of a low-performing school.

Now, some people might argue that Lindsey is advocating a reduction in local school board authority – and they would be right.

Now, more than ever the votes of fair minded people are essential, and that vote should be for Obama. So go vote. Vote for justice, accountability, a man who says what he means and does what he says. Vote for what is decent and right for America, all of America. Vote for the man who will stand up for women’s rights, for equal rights, for equal pay, and the chance for a good life for all Americans, not just the wealthy. Vote for the future, for technology and education and a decent world for our children. If you think deeply and unselfishly you will see Obama is not only the better choice, but that he is truly special. You likely won’t see the likes of a statesman of Obama’s caliber again in your lifetime. In their own time most of the great presidents from both parties have been tested by events, and many faced a challenging path to election– Lincoln, Jefferson, FDR, Kennedy. Obama will be compared by history to such men. Look at his steady hand in foreign policy. Getting the job done with Bin Laden. Ending wars successfully rather than starting them recklessly. Effective and respected when working with world leaders. Look at his courage in taking the difficult path with healthcare—so badly in need of change. Look at his foresight in moving America towards clean energy, and away from dependency on foreign oil, and environmental damage from fossil fuels. Take the long view, the unselfish view, the righteous and patriotic view. Vote for Obama.

Jim, any word on the Hispanic turnout so far in the state relative to 2008?

And why did Isaakson vote FOR the budget compromise if implementing it would be a “disaster” as he calls it? Or did he think we’d forget that part?

But it isn’t racist that every single one of them is voting for Obama because he is black.

How many of these voters even know or even care that he supports indefinite detention and even assassination of US citizens without due process? How many of them even know anything about his policies other than the platitudes that show up on bumper stickers or the mainstream media?

But then how many Romney supporters know that he is just as bad as Obama on virtually every critical issue in this campaign?

Jim is that not prejudicial to assume that the African-American voters are all voting for President Obama?
How about pointing out a great thing? More African-American voters are actually voting in Georgia.

The parent trigger law concept sounds interesting. If the major gripe about public schools is poor performance, too often the higher ups tend to stand behind their people or do to little to late. If such a law could be constructed so as to not allow a small but loud group of parents to ouster a school administration, it could be a better alternative than open a charter school and send your kids there.

There would need to be process in place for notification, discovery, debate, & voting by a plurality of parents. I would love to see such a process in place for the principal of Simpson Middle School.

The question is how do they know that 33% of the early voters have been African-American? Is someone sitting there recording the race of each one of those votes that comes in? Would this not be profiling? Are the Democrats not the ones who are always complaining about profiling? Also, most of them do not bat an eye when someone says they voted for BO just because he is Black, yet if you or I said we were voting for Romney since he is a white man running against a Black man, they would be aghast and all up in arms. The hypocrisy is rampant and shameless!

Looks like they really picked a winner to do that commercial. Virginal? yeah, right? Give me a break! Maybe that’s why she is unemployed.(assuming that, just seems she would be) as most employers count that as a very negative thing in a job interview. Agreed Dum-Bass, this is an issue that I have been discussing with others’, that is really the number #1 problem with this election (as well) as the last election, it’s a genuine stereotype that if you are “black” you will only vote for Obama because he is not white; on the other hand, outside of homosexuals, will “white” people only vote for Romney so that the “black” President will be removed from the white house???? Questions, Questions, but very little answers…. I am a “black’ male who is pulling for Romney, not because I dislike Obama, but because I am more Pro-Republican… but maybe I shouldn’t speak too loudy… don’t want to be called an “Uncle Tom”….lol

@ Teamocil ARE voting or COULD be voting, it makes no difference!!!!! Just the thought of tying race to a voting preference/practice is prejudicial.
Think about it this way, if Romney had said “well I am white, so I could lose the African-American vote.” How much hell would he have caught?

I was just saying how about we take the numbers from the SoS and put a heavy emphasis on the fact that this might show more people are voting!! In 2008 about half the people in this state voted. That is sad. More early voting and more absentee ballots shows that more people are voting. Perhaps a story on how this shows we should have the polls open for more than 1 day. Nah, he just went the easy route, race.

Galloway, have you ever heard of the Law of Large numbers? I know you stayed awake in English class but let me catch you up on the math classes you slept through…

Georgia has the largest black population in the country. Almost 32.8% of Georgians now call themselves black which is up from around 30% in 2008. For the past 40 years and since the Civil Rights era, African Americans have been migrating to the South and specifically to Atlanta, GA where it is seen as the Great Mecca of Black Culture.

So from election cycle to election cycle we would expect this trend to continue. So seeing 2 to 3 percentage points increase in voter turnout by blacks is in line with over all population trends here in Georgia.

Jim,

I will bet you dollars to donuts that a lower percentage of AA voters cast their ballot for Obama this go round than did so in 2008. Turnout? If we get a higher AA turnout this time then it will be because the AA’s who couldn’t bring themselves to vote against the first AA nominee even though they disagreed with his socialist leanings, are not willing to sit on the sideline this time around after seeing the man trample on the future of our country for the last four years. We absolutely cannot withstand the long-term consequences of his judicial appointees.

As for you democrats who think you stand for something higher and more moral in the World – get over yourselves. Everyone on both sides of the aisle would like to see everyone prosper. Its the math in the bank account and historically significant statistics that show tax increases produce less revenue that are being ignored by the left. You can’t support someone for life. Jesus didn’t give Peter his fish. He taught him how to be a fisherman so that he could catch his own fish.

To be honest, I’m not that excited about him again in 2012. Not because he is black because I and most could give a rats ass about whether he’s black or half black. It’s because he hasn’t done much for the country by way of solving its problems. No one cares who caused it. Either you can fix it or you can’t! Dawg Pound- From one Dawg to another, too many people don’t realize that the president IS getting the job done. Six months into Obama’s presidency, before his policies started to take effect, unemployment stood at 9.5%. It’s now at 7.8%. So unemployment is actually way down. The number of people filing for new unemployment benefits is down. The real estate market is back up. Foreclosures are down. The stock market has nearly doubled since his first year. Not to mention he took out Bin Laden and saved the U.S. auto industry. THE JOB IS GETTING DONE. Don’t go back to Bush era policies and economics when we’re just now recovering from them.

A little history about the black people voting for Obama because he’s black thing. No Democrat since Carter has managed to win less than 84 percent of the black vote in the presidential election. Kerry managed to win 88 percent, and Gore won 90 percent of the black vote. I suggest that 88-89 percent is the average any Democrat could expect to earn.

Voter participation among blacks increased by about 10 percent in 2008 — to about the average participation rate for white voters — and Obama won 95 percent of the black vote. It is reasonable to conclude that the extra 10 percent all turned out for Obama, and that those people may be voting with racial identification in mind. But it’s hard to argue that “they’re all just voting for him because he’s black.” He’s a Democrat. That’s all it takes.

“Parental Triggers” putting management of local schools in parents’ hands? What does Ed propose to do about this:

CONSTITUTION OF THE STATE OF GEORGIA
ARTICLE VIII. EDUCATION
SECTION V. LOCAL SCHOOL SYSTEMS

Ga. Const. Art. VIII, § V, Para. II (2012)

PARAGRAPH II. Boards of education

Each school system shall be under the management and control of a board of education, the members of which shall be elected as provided by law. School board members shall reside within the territory embraced by the school system and shall have such compensation and additional qualifications as may be provided by law. Any board of education to which the members are appointed as of December 31, 1992, shall continue as an appointed board of education through December 31, 1993, and the appointed members of such board of education who are in office on December 31, 1992, shall continue in office as members of such appointed board until December 31, 1993, on which date the terms of office of all appointed members shall end.

My guess is that “management and control” includes decisions on administration. Hate to go all legal here, but Ed’s bill is a pretty obvious constitutional violation. And no, nothing in the “Charter School” amendment changes the term “management and control”.

Isakson just said Congress is the biggest enemy to the united states. He’s referring to the gridlock about economic reforms. He spoke in the conditional about a collapse, when the reality is that our collapse is a fresh wound. He talks about a deadline, when the fiscal cliff is already a deadline, so he’s kicking the can down the road, and worse, he’s the bravest of our senators. You should hear what the rest of senators think we should do. Yes, dressing up like indians and throwing tea in the harbor is one of their initiatives.

Hi!

As a minority (African-American), I can tell you that those people voting for Obama because he’s black is as much as those in the majority voting for Romney because he’s white. Most minorities are voting for Obama because unemployment is under 8%. And they like his economic stances, particularly on more taxes for the Top 1%. And shutting down the wars. That’s why they’re going to the polls so strongly.

Believe me, if the unemployment rate was going up and not down, and if we doubled down on the wars and didn’t have a plan for the deficit and healthcare, they would vote for Romney or stay home.

Here’s the issue for me: How is Romney going to pay for all of his spending? How is he going to pay for these tax cuts? How is he going to pay for the military spending? The deficit is going to explode! Obama has a gap in his spending, but at least tax increases are on the table. But I’m personally sick of folks talking about a tax cut during times where the deficit is so large.

At least that why I’m not voting for Romney.

I have often wondered what makes someone vote the way they do? What is it that makes someone vote one way or another. What are their driving factors. The reason I wonder this is becuase no 1 candidate, or one political party can be all things to all people. The facts are simple that there has never been a political party or a candidate that you agree with 100% of the time. My questions is based on the first part of this article, the talk and the assumption is that the black vote will go for the President, based on pols and history nothing surprizing there. Then you look at the Charter School amendment, and I would bet that the major of black votes will be for that. I look at the Democratic Party of today and wonder what it has in common with black voters that support it. I could take any number of current hot button issues and again will wager that the offical stance of todays Democratic Party goes against what you see in polling data from the black community. So again I ask what is it that draws someone to vote the way they do?

I can just see some idiot with a tally sheet trying to decide how to classify some of these multiracial people.

steady “proven” leadership Obama has provided our Nation during the worst financial, housing and auto crisis since the Great Depression. GOP cannot be trusted in office.

Now, that is a knee slapper! 43 months of unemployment over 8%, 23 million under or unemployed Americans, 5T more debt, 1.5T deficit, record unemployment numbers for blacks, women, and other minorities, a failed foreign policy, diplomatic personnel killed, and blame and excuses for everyone of those stats. This person can’t imagine how hard it is to pay bills, shop at the grocery store, take care of children, and pay for gas. Right now I don’t see that in the republican choice. He brags on one statement that I’m so tried of hearing “I know how to bring jobs to the USA”, but he has also taking jobs from the USA…. I tend to read the facts. I don’t vote for someone because of their race. If I did that, I wouldn’t be able to vote for anyone…….You see there is good and bad in all races of people. None of us are prefect. Have a wife named Michelle? More than just color impacts a person’s decisions at the ballot box….all sorts of factors may apply.

2. Black parents care about school choice, too. Amazingly, 50% of Georgia’s charters are children of color. And the number is higher in just the state charters.

Well, yesterday, The Denver Post detailed the criminal investigation of Abound Solar, a defunct solar-panel manufacturer in Colorado that was run on taxpayer “investments,”….. for securities fraud, consumer fraud and financial misrepresentation.
Abound shuttered its Colorado plant and filed for bankruptcy, leaving “125 workers without jobs and taxpayers holding the bag for up to $260 million in defaulted loans.

You might also be aware that the company was a big contributor to the Obama campaign.
Abound Solar was awarded a $400 million loan guarantee ….Taxpayers money !!!…….Deeply troubling ??….. You tell me…..

Romney On Whether We’re Better Off: ‘Of Course It’s Getting Better’

Interview with Laura Ingraham and Mitt Romney:

INGRAHAM: Isn’t it a hard argument to make if you’re saying, like, OK, Obama inherited this recession, he took a bunch of steps to try to turn the economy around, and now, we’re seeing more jobs, but vote against him anyway? Isn’t that a hard argument to make? Is that a stark enough contrast?

It’s obvious you would vote for Obama no matter what he did. I think we should heed Eastwood’s advice – “If he is not getting the job done, we have to let him go.”
Obama had both house’s of congress for two years and got much of what he wanted regardless of the will of the people. It did not help. The economy is still on hold and underperforming. The people saw this, and it resulted in major gains for the Republicans in the 2010 elections. The American people still feel the same way two years later which should result in a Romney victory. We need to try something new instead of choosing more of the same.

“Even if it drops slightly, it could be taken as a sign that President Barack Obama’s political base remains enthusiastic,”

This race has never been about the “political base”, but about the independent undecided. It matters not what Hussein’s base turns out, Georgia will go decidedly for President Romney.

“create that “grand bargain” to address a $16 trillion federal debt and avoid the automatic tax hikes and spending cuts set to go into effect at the close of the year.”

Why would anyone believe anything the Liar-in-Chief says? He created $6 trillion of this indebtedness and has run annual deficits of $1+ trillion.

“I believe the minimum result will be 53-47 Romney, over 300 electoral votes”

I believe that is about right . . .

“Vote for justice, accountability, a man who says what he means and does what he says. Vote for what is decent and right for America, all of America. Vote for the man who will stand up for women’s rights, for equal rights, for equal pay, and the chance for a good life for all Americans”

That would, of course, be President Romney.

“Great post. But sadly, they won’t look at any of that.”

Heard enough and seen enough lies from Hussein himself for the past five years: why believe a mere sycophant?

“But it isn’t racist that every single one of them is voting for Obama because he is black.”

Of course it is! You expected differently?

“How do they know? I do not recall ever being asked my race in the voting process.”

Dimocrats keep up with that statistic: they have to be sure that none escape the dimocrat plantation.

“I’m interested in the Mormon turnout in the South.”

It’s going to be higher than the muslim turnout . . .

“The walking around money thirty dollars this year, and if you bring two more people who can register you get fifty.”

. . . plus a bottle of cheap wine and three $1 scratch-offs.

“GO OBAMA 2012!”

Yeah, go straight to . . .

“And by the way, people on this blog commenting about black people voting for the POTUS just because he’s black,”

You’re wrong: I’m not voting for him because he is a liar, a muslim and a communist.

“How about you head to the south side and start referring to the folks you see as ‘negroes’, then we’ll see if it’s derogatory or not.”

You do not have to vote against your own interest. Go to c-span. Check out Rommey’s video 5/14/12, Ryan’s budget 2011 which cut billions from veterans program, 35% from medicaid-which pays for healthcare for unemployed, low paid childrens healthcare, nursing home care for seniors/disabled, food stamps, medicare to vouchers, cut taxes for rich. It will be law if repub. take over. check c-span for primary source/facts, votes/budget.
Rommey::: get rid of healthcare, you think it’s ok to pay for well paid temporary Washingon, state, county politicians to have healthcare insurance/pensions paid for by taxpayers. They put their britches on the same way you do. Why should they get better deal than you?

41% of georgians fit Rommey’s 47% victims he is talking about you low paid /unemployed white fellows too. If you are not one of 41%, you could be tomorrow if you have a heart attack or lose your job.

Anyone that thinks the slave trade was fed and built on blacks selling out other blacks are sadly mistaken; in 1860 a prime field hand brought $1,200.00 on the auction block ($24,000.00 in today’s money) nuff said.

Col. Lawrence Wilkson who is White and Former Chief of Staff to Colin Powell

said that his PARTY (Republican) is a party of RACISTS.

The only reason they want Obama out is because of the COLOR

OF HIS SKIN.

From his mouth TO GOD’S HEAR.

He told the TRUTH and SHAMED THE DEVIL.

It is SAD that other white people will ADMIT the TRUTH.

But God is watching and he knows their heart is evil.

The entire Obama campaign appears to me to be targeting our less intelligent and gullible voters. It is obvious from comments posted here and on other blogs that his target audience has, in fact, been reached. I don’t believe this will accomplish what he needs, though, and President Romney looks to be on track for the win.

What is necessary to produce a communist muslim going away party? (The White House domestic staff is trying to get up to speed before Obama’s January departure!)

FYI, I am a retired educator.

If you are proud to vote for a PATHOLOGICAL LIAR like Mitt Romney

who belongs to a cult (Mormons), wears religious underwear, who baptize

dead bodies…who said that he does not care about you (the 47%) …..

that is your burden to bear.

Mitt Romney will NEVER BE PRESIDENT.

Even some white people don’t like him.

And that reason is why HE WILL NEVER BE PRESIDENT.

Tell all of those Republicans who cannot accept the large African American voter turnout. Think about all of those negative comments made by Tea Party members. Never spit into the wind, on a windy day. Those comments felt like salt being rubbed into a large wound. And they hurt.
Whatever wounds that had healed over the years, were reopened when those comments were made. As in, “He needs to learn to be an American…” That translates to “You will never be accepted, no matter what you do”. “End Obamacare” equals “We think more about money than your family’s health”. Blind stupidity, thinking that blacks would forget by election day. Think vendetta.

All racists find a comfortable home in the Republican Clan. The party of racists like Trump, Gingrich (a writer of soft porn and self-styled historian), Palin, Sununu, Paul, and the rest of the racists is happily going to be within four years, the permanent racist minority party. By hating African Americans, by hating (not just principled disagreement, but hating) President Obama, by hating Hispanics, by hating immigrants, by appealing to the Confederate states, the GOP, the party of money worship, the anti-Jesus party of selfishness, on its way to its deserved powerlessness. Immoral racists are demographically doomed, with the help of our Lord.
