Your morning jolt: Mitt Romney wouldn’t deport ‘dream’ immigrants

In Colorado for Wednesday’s debate, GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney said that young illegal immigrants who receive temporary work permits to stay in the country under a program established by President Barack Obama won’t be deported if he is elected. From the Denver Post:

“The people who have received the special visa that the president has put in place, which is a two-year visa, should expect that the visa would continue to be valid. I’m not going to take something that they’ve purchased,” Romney said. “Before those visas have expired we will have the full immigration reform plan that I’ve proposed.”

This summer, the Obama administration instituted a program allowing young illegal immigrants, brought here as children by the parents, to obtain work permits. The policy paralleled the so-called “Dream Act” legislation that has encountered Republican opposition in Congress.

The newspaper also reported that Romney was “hazy” when it came to the future of Colorado’s medical marijuana industry, which hands $5 million a year to the state in sales taxes. Romney said he would enforce federal drug laws that prohibit marijuana for any use.

The New York Times has a piece on the journalists who will moderate the three presidential debates and one confrontation between vice-presidential candidates. Tomorrow’s presidential debate in Denver will be refereed by PBS’ Jim Lehrer, who has participated in more televised debates than any journalist in U.S. history.

Even though he told us last year, when the schedule of the October debates was first announced, that he was done:

“I haven’t been invited, and if invited I’m not going to accept,” Lehrer said in a phone conversation. I did my 11 and I’ve survived. It’s time for others to have the opportunity.”

***
More than a few workers in Marietta won’t be getting notices of possible layoffs. From The Hill newspaper:

Lockheed Martin and other defense contractors backed down from issuing layoff notices to employees on Monday after the Obama administration promised to pick up the tab for severance costs resulting from sequestration.

The news provided welcome relief for President Obama, who faced the prospect of mass layoff notices in battleground states just days before the election, and outraged Republicans, who accused the administration of bending the law to hide job losses from the public.

The White House issued guidance on Friday that said the government would cover the costs if contracts are canceled and layoffs occur due to the automatic spending cuts set for 2013. But that offer would be null and void for any contractor that issues job-loss warnings before sequestration begins.

***
Over at the National Journal, Ron Brownstein has an analysis of poll results in 11 battleground states that shows President Barack Obama doing well with a surprising demographic: White women without a college education:

Obama’s gains with these so-called “waitress moms” are especially pronounced in heartland battlegrounds like Iowa, Ohio, and Wisconsin.

Combined with his continued support among other elements of his “coalition of the ascendant,” including young people, minorities, and college-educated women, these advances among blue-collar women have been enough to propel Obama to the lead over Republican Mitt Romney in the most recent public surveys in all 11 states (albeit in some cases within the polls’ margins of error).

Democrats say blue-collar women have been the principal, and most receptive, target for their extended ad barrage portraying Romney as a plutocrat who is blind, if not indifferent, to the struggles of average families.

***
The AJC’s Politifact Georgia today takes a look at Atlanta City Councilman Michael Julian Bond’s contention that nearly 400 arrests for panhandling last year involved only 78 people, an indication that the problem can be traced to a chronic few.

Oh how nice of Obama to spend government money (taxpayer money) to cover all costs associated with lay-offs.

MiltonMan – I have worked for a defense contractor. When a defense contractor lays off people, the costs are charged to “Overhead”, which is billed to the government anyway. This is a smart move by Obama. It doesn’t actually cost the government any more or less money – but it does create an opportunity for the two parties to work together.

Romney isn’t the “severe conservative” and “supporter of the rule of law” that he promised to be during the Republican Primaries,
I am outraged that Romney should try to pander to the Latino vote like Obama has already done.
Obama has the Mexican vote in his pocket. There is NO ADVANTAGE for Romney to bow to Latinos now
He’d better start pandering to the Conservatives who nominated him. Trying to become “all things to all men” isn’t how a Conservative acts.

‘ I’m not going to take something that they’ve purchased,” Romney said. “Before those visas have expired we will have the full immigration reform plan that I’ve proposed.”

First, they purchased their visas?

Second, does anyone have a copy of/link to of the details of Romney’s immigration reform?

So, you would rather those workers be layed off? After all, it was the Conservative’s fault that this Fiscal Cliff exists in the first place. They absolutely refused to consider any tax increase for the top wage earners, so here we are. Perfect example of why Republican politics are a danger to this country.

Anafiel, Please explain how cutting taxes in the amount of about 100 billion caused the real estate market to crash ? How did the tax cut lead to the 5 trillion debt we had prior to Bush getting into office ? Please expalin how that tax increase caused congress to spend the Social Security trust fund prior to Bush getting elected. And please do not blame conservatives on the fact that so much of our budget goes to entitlements. And the one question I would lake answered the most. Even dems say the tax increases will hurt the economy and cause the fiscal cliff to be worse, how does increasing taxes hurt ? Libs love taxes but did not raise them when they had a supermajority and could have, why ?

Layoffs happen. It’s an unfortunate occurrence that happens during cycles in the economy.

The national debt and deficit spending has increased by $5 trillion dollars since Obama took office. To blame a “fiscal cliff” on anyone else is turning a blind eye to reality. Those are official numbers, go check them out on the Congressional Budget Office website for yourself.

So yes, I would prefer a solid economy that is given time to go through cycles and produces real jobs. Not jobs that are temporarily propped up by more Obama deficit spending to boost his campaign numbers.

Good for Mitt!

As a “Rockefeller Republican” (our entire Ga membership can meet in a phone booth!), Governor Romney is the best candidate this side of John Huntsman. Others worry he will govern from the White House like he did from the statehouse (by compromising with the opposition in order to get things done), we are supporting him BECAUSE we believe he will do this.

Govenor Romney is strong on defense and moderate/liberal on social issues. Above all, he believes that the business of America is business.

I just wish he could campaign as well as I know he will govern!

Jack–it’s not just in Georgia that your party has abandoned you. Huntsman was indeed the most reasonable and intelligent candidate in the R primary race, but the “base” and those writing the checks preferred to support clowns like Gingrich. Senator Luger was defeated in a primary for the sole reason that he does not share the totalizing, black-and-white view of the radical wing of the Republican party. And now Romney is running like a scared rabbit from his past positions, which were eminently more reasonable than the ones he is pretending to subscribe to now. Meanwhile, we leftists and Democrats are going to be laughing all the way to the White House…

This is TAX-PAYER dollars being used to help Obama get re-elected…………shameful……….the lay-offs are inevietable (do some research and you will see what I mean). People should know the truth. Obama (& most of the main-street media) simply will not tell people the truth.

Obama should be required to pay for these expenses out of his re-election campaign funds! His re-election is the ONLY reason this tax-payer money is being spent.

“Waitress moms” know the hassle of struggling on an hourly wage with no affordable health insurance. When a child is ill, waitress moms lose income to sit with the child — often for many hours — in an emergency room. That lost income means less food for the month after the bills are paid, if they can all be paid. Waitress moms know that the Republicans sneer at them for wanting affordable health services and birth control that empowers them to take personal responsibility for their family size and the health of their lady parts. Waitress moms don’t dream about driving two Cadillacs like Mrs. Romney; they just want something that will get them to work and back to their kids on time.

Know who needs planes? Our national forest service, and all the fire-fighting agencies who risk their lives putting out those wildfires out west every year. They’re essentially flying antique buckets, with dumping equipment duct taped to them.

Use American brain power and work ethic for America! (Not sure who’s benefitting from those F-22s, but it isn’t us.) Why can’t Lockheed make stuff we NEED? I’m not for putting them out of work, I’m for putting them to work in a way that benefits the people whose tax dollars feed their business.

Typical comments from the right wingers who, as always in their rush to bash Obama, find it inconvenient to actually look at facts and maybe an analysis of the action being taken. Assume that layoff notices go out to the engineers, tool and die makers and programmers who have been trained on a particular defense project. Unemployment among these groups is around 3% or less, meaning they will immediately find work elsewhere and the contractors, will have to not only have paid their severence, which as has been noted, will ultimately be paid by us, but will also have more costs incurred, to be paid by us, for the hiring and training of their replacements. This will lead to inevitable cost over-runs which means, again, more cost being picked up by us, the taxpayer. Obama may get political capital out of this move, which galls the white wing to no end, but they cannot truthfully claim it is costing us any more money.

If you want to make the rebuttal that these projects will be cancelled, ergo no costs that I outlined will be incurred, I say: Keep dreaming. After the oil companies, the largest owners of shares of congress are the defense contractors. Even if a resolution to sequestration is not forthcoming, those in congress on retainer to lockheed et al, will not let defense contracts be cut.

Exhibit A ladies and gentlemen of the teeny tiny small mind types that populate the repub party. To them a waitress mom must be unmarried, promiscuous, and irresponsible. The fact she is a waitress mom is prima facie evidence, and she must be a sorry himan being.

Doesn;t occur to them that maybe the baby’s father and her husband is an E4 fighting in Afghanistan, or stationed in some other remote corner serving our country, and she is trying to supplement the dependents’ stipend provided by the military. Doesn;t occur to them that maybe the baby’s father and her husband died on the job and she is trying to supplement her meager survivor benefit she receives from Soc Sec, or that her husband has been injured on the job and is drawing a few meager dollars from worker’s comp while he recuperates. Maybe she and her husband are students in pre med, living on whatever they can earn in between learning how to take care of td’s prostate 15-20 years from now, and their pregnancy was unplanned. (of course to people like td, they shouldn’t have had sex in the first place, knowing that it could lead to pregnancy. No one should ever ever have sex unless it is for procreation)

To the right wing none of this can be true, anyone struggling in today’s economy must be a welfare queen or moocher and couldn’t possibly be an upright, charitable christian like td and his fellow white wingers.

***********************************************************************

Nice try, but no cigar. You made an implication, that this waitress mom is a single mother, irresponsible, living on the dole. Just because you posed it as a question, does not change what you were implying.

Here’s a question for you, what were you doing coming out of a bar with your beautiful, secretary at 3 AM? Having asked that, do you think I am actually asking a question, or am I trying to imply that you were having an illicit tryst. If I were a narrow minded conservative like you, I would assume that, but since I and fellow liberals don’t automatically assume the worst, we consider the possibility that the secretary was too intoxicated to drive and called you, her favorite uncle, to drive her home. Like most conservatives, you shoot first, and aim later.

“Why is it that you leftest march in the streets for a persons rights to participate in self destructive or dumb behavior but then refuse to hold said person responsible for their actions and then want all the people to pay for the consequences of said behavior?”

And when did you stop beating your wife? As I have stated before your idea of freedom is you can live your life the way you want, other people are free to live their lives the way you want, but as far as you are concerned, they shouldn’t have the freedom to live it the way they want. No one is asking you to pay for someone else’s mistakes beyond “promoting the general welfare,” one of the pstated purposes of our government. Personally, I don’t think that means we should support a crack addict’s life style, but it does mean we ensure that children of crack addicts are fed and receive basic health care. I don’t see where that is any more egregious than making a bank depositor whole, who made a bad choice and put their money in a bank that went under. The FDIC ensures they don’t suffer for actions not their own. By the same token we can ensure that this country’s children and others who can’t fend for themselves, don’t suffer when circumstances beyond their control put them in untenable positions.
