U.S. Rep. John Barrow, D-Augusta, is always at his most vulnerable when he attempts private conversations with his fellow Democrats.
In 2010, it was a radio ad aimed at African-American audiences in which Barrow promised to work “hand-in-hand” with Barack Obama.
This week, GOP challenger Lee Anderson is making hay with a fund-raising letter sent out by Barrow in which the congressman boasts of voting with his party 85 percent of the time – muddying the message of his latest TV ad, which proclaims his independence. Here’s the passage in question:
As for the 15 percent of the time that Barrow didn’t vote with his Democratic colleagues, the National Rifle Association cited one instance in its Tuesday endorsement of the Democratic incumbent:
Barrow voted to hold Attorney General Eric Holder in contempt of Congress for refusing to comply with congressional subpoenas related to the deadly Operation Fast and Furious scandal, and voted for an amendment to prevent the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives from circumventing the will of Congress by centralizing records of thousands of Americans’ long gun purchases.
