To meet budget cuts, public will lose access to state historical records

Secretary of State Brian Kemp announced this afternoon that, to meet a 3 percent ($732,626) budget cut ordered by Gov. Nathan Deal, he’ll be forced to cut off general public access to the state archives collection in Morrow, effective Nov. 1.

From Kemp:

”The decision to reduce public access to the historical records of this state was not arrived at without great consternation. To my knowledge, Georgia will be the only state in the country that will not have a central location in which the public can visit to research and review the historical records of their government and state.

“The staff that currently works to catalog, restore, and provide reference to the state of Georgia’s permanent historical records will be reduced. The employees that will be let go through this process are assets to the state of Georgia and will be missed. After November 1st, the public will only be allowed to access the building by appointment; however, the number of appointments could be limited based on the schedule of the remaining employees.

“… I believe that transparency and open access to records are necessary for the public to educate themselves on the issues of our government. I will fight during this legislative session to have this cut restored so the people will have a place to meet, research, and review the historical records of Georgia.”

No doubt the powerful and well-funded history-genealogical lobby will be working hand-in-glove with Kemp to fix this.

I am deeply disappointed by this choice of budget cut. How much do the staff there make? Eliminating them can’t possibly be enough to stabilize Georgia’s budget! As a historian who has used these archives regularly, I can say that they are a very valuable resource – in fact, one that I just recommended to a class of 50 students yesterday. I hope our Governor realizes what a poor choice this is and restores funding to the archives.

Records????What records????Let’s build a new Falcon playground and the public will forget about History or Records. Also the employees that will lose their jobs should welcome a new staduim. This is what is wrong in State Government!!! I hope Deal will see how this appears to the public before they close the Record Center.

You get the government you pay for. Or, to be completely accurate, the government our elected officials are brave enough to ask us to pay for. As long as they are held in thrall by Grover Norquist and the Tea Party, our state government will continue to be 50th in everything.

Enjoy that extra $4.73 in your next paycheck, Tea Partiers, and be thankful for our low low taxes.

That is, until your kids drop dead of salmonella because we can’t afford restaurant inspectors or ambulance services.

Or, the Secretary of State’s Office could allocate the salaries of the eight employees immediately under the Secretary of State to the budget cut. (None of these eight employees are dedicated to the Georgia Archives.) Under this scenario, the Office would have a surplus of $78,927.26. These revenues could be used to continue compliance with OCG 45-13-41 entitled objectives and purposes of the Georgia Archives, generally.

Does this administration realize what is required for ‘governance’ and ‘government services’ as well as that ‘revenue’ (also known as TAXES) are a legitimate, normal and natural part of the process?

It is well past time to acknowledge the folly of attempting to develop a ‘do-nothing-charge-nothing’
model of governance.

Money being spent on a PLAN that is UNTESTED and UNPROVEN in such dire economic times.

Inside many liberals is a totalitarian screaming to get out. They don’t like to have another point of view in the room that they don’t squash and the way they try to squash it is by character assassination and name calling. — David Horowitz

It was in the 1960s that the left convinced itself that there is something fascistic about patriotism and something perversely “patriotic” about running down America. Anti-Americanism– a stand-in for hatred of Western civilization — became the stuff of sophisticates and intellectuals as never before. Flag burners became the truest “patriots” because dissent — not just from partisan politics, but the American project itself — became the highest virtue. — Jonah Goldberg

The Unreported Racism Of The 2012 Election: 0% Of African-Americans Support Romney

“The media keeps suggesting that the racism regarding candidates has to do with whites not wanting to vote for a black man, even though Barack Obama won a presidential election with a great amount of white support – obviously – or he wouldn’t have won an election in the country where the vast majority of people are white.

What the media isn’t talking about is any survey such as the NBC-Wall Street results which say that there are basically no black supporters for the Caucasian candidate, Mitt Romney, in 2012. From August 16 through August 20, one-thousand people were surveyed and not even 1% of America’s blacks in that survey’s resulting data could say they support Mitt Romney.

Granted, African-Americans usually support the Democrats. But even the unpopular Republican candidate of 2008, Sen. John McCain, managed to come up with 4% support from America’s blacks. George W. Bush did even somewhat better than that.”

Kris @ 9:32 pm – There will be TRUCK LOADS filled with MONEY to be dispersed spent all over Georgia. Many of the politically connected businessmen will get the first share. Another share will be saved for Pastor BOB and his money changing friends to prepare him for what will be coming next.

A STATE WIDE School voucher payment system, but this will not happen until all of the property and schools are built and this planned is finally proved dead and unworkable. The remaining share will be saved for the many campaign and party donors. Their payoff will come in the form of a Charter or Academy School being built near their communities and churches. Their children, family members, friends, church members and neighbors will be moved to the top of the list of these very coveted and not so many slots. The remaining slots will be left for the rest of US, which the choices will be very far away and far in between.

All of this will occur, as we watch the many struggling public school systems crumble and die. One by one from the weight of decreasing funds to be shared to further fund this new proposed plan.

Wrong again. The states budget was about $22.5 billion in 2007, dipped to $17 billion in in 2010 and now is back up to $19 billion (as revenues rose). The problem is all the free loaders receiving Medicaid have increased the states cost by $1 billion.

The money should be cut from this program to go to the archives.
