We have yet to see a copy of her book, and haven’t made it to the bookstore for today’s release, but former Georgia secretary of state Karen Handel apparently says she went up against Karl Rove – and lost – during her fight to separate breast cancer group Susan G. Komen for the Cure from Planned Parenthood.
That’s just the kind of tidbit that might give a publisher reason to think of Handel’s brief stint as a senior vice president for public policy as something that might be worth a book.
In “Planned Bullyhood,” Handel – having lost the 2010 GOP race for governor – tells of her efforts to separate Planned Parenthood, a provider of abortion in addition to women’s health services, from the breast cancer group.
Komen CEO Nancy Brinker eventually caved, and Handel had no choice but to make an exit. From an excerpt of the book posted Monday by anti-abortion blogger Jill Stanek:
Nancy’s reply stunned me. “Karen, I’ve talked to a lot of people. And even Karl says we have to backtrack. There’s just no other way.”
“Karl? Who’s Karl?”
She looked at me strangely as if I should know exactly who she was talking about. She said, “Karl Rove!”
I started laughing. Just when I thought things could not get more bizarre. What in the world did Karl Rove have to do with anything?
Rove, the former Bush adviser, is already taking heat from Republican social conservatives for using unpleasant language to describe his feelings about Todd Akins, the Republican candidate for U.S. Senate in Missouri, after Akins’ comments about “legitimate rape.”
The Daily Caller tracked Rove down this afternoon:
Reached by phone, the prominent Republican strategist said the charge made by former Komen senior vice president Karen Handel in “Planned Bullyhood” is “not accurate.” He declined to elaborate.

When Gallop (not such a conservative poll) asked the question back in May:
Do you think abortion should be legal under most circumstances or only a few circumstances?
Legal under any: 25% (most of you pro choice nuts on this blog)
Legal under most: 13%
Legal only in a few: 39% (I fall in this because mothers life is in danger falls here)
illegal in all: 20%
Bottom line 59% of the country believes that if not Rape, Incest or the mothers life in danger then all other abortions should be illegal.

td–Gallup is considered to be slightly right leaning, but I think they are pretty accurate for their questions. I have seen these polls before and I have seen others framing the question differently which come up with quite different results. Also, you have the reality of a Republican Party which has a “Personhood” plank in its platform, talks about “legitimate” rape and would even ban contraception. Personhood would criminalize prescribing and taking many birth control products. I understand how people have strongly held differing views on abortion and a woman’s right to choose, but the Republicans’ agenda goes far beyond that. Certainly, even you don’t endorse this expanded agenda?

Big Hat @ 5:38 pm – Every time a comment like that is made and the room is full of laughter, You are encouraging at least 100 women or more to Vote against you with every utterance. Come November 6th, You are going to be surprised at the number of women standing in line quietly and with a Big smile. Not sure ff you remember or are aware of Barry Goldwater in 1964. That was the last record loss by the Republicans. This one should break that record. That was also the last time the Vice Presidential candidate was a HOUSE MEMBER as well. Even today, many cannot even remember his name, just as will do the same for PAUL.
The Slut Vote will be Huge, you can count on it!

We shall totally disagree about Gallop leaning to the right.. If you just go back and look at their own data about their Presidential polls and the results then you will find that they over represent the Dems between 1 to 2.5% and under represent Republicans by .05 to 1.5%.
As far as outlawing BC it is according to what you consider BC. The morning after pill would be outlawed but regular BC would not. The person hood amendment says a conceived child is a human being. It would not outlaw abortions where the mothers life is in danger but would in the case of rape and incest. Most of the Republicans do not agree with this and it has no chance of becoming an amendment to the Constitution any time soon.
I have said this before the only way abortion is outlawed is if the SCOTUS changes its mind and sends the matter back to the states to decide for each individual state.

The average annual cost for family healthcare coverage is $20,000. Karen forgets that Romney/Ryan would exclude her from healthcare because she has a pre-existing condition, and paying $3,600 for “healthcare insurance” is not reality. That’s why this country has a debt problem. Dixiecrats don’t know arthmetic.

Karen lost the Republican primary for governor to Nathan Deal because he succesfully painted her as not sufficiently anti-gay and his misogynist supporters at Georgia Right to Life didn’t think she was sufficiently pro-Life enough because of her views on the exceptions for rape and incest. GRTL launched an unprincipled attack on her and even on her religious affilitation and it was ugly and it was dirty. Then she goes to Washington finds herself hammered by Planned Parenthood and it was ugly and it was dirty because she recognizes there is something wrong when people who give money for breast cancer research have a portion of that money given to the nation’s largest abortion provider. As a result, of this deception, pro-life Komen supporters are spitting mad at Komen because Komen placed sisterhood ahead of their mission adn because it feels like a bait and switch to a pro-life breast cancer research donor. To them it appeared that while Komen was racing for the cure to breast cancer, Planned Parenthood was racing to terminate the lives of the unborn. And, as we have learned since, PP was even assisting and encouraging young women hoping for a male child to terminate unwanted female fetuses. For goodness sakes people, they were actually assisting in providing sex selection abortions – that is Chinese-level scary stuff and there is apparently no outrage on the left about this which is also kind of Chinese-level scary. Have we lost our minds? When Karen Handel joined Komen they desparately needed to get back to basics and actually race for the cure and fund breast cancer research which is why everyone was wearing those pink ribbons and walking and racing in the first place. Karen did the right thing and got hammered. But I’m thinking that Karen Handel, vilified by Planned Parenthood, vilified by Georgia Right to Life and now vilified by all the smarmy haters on this site like Bernie and Shar must be doing something right to attract all this hate from extremists on both sides. For its part, Komen is suffering today because they lost their way and because they backed down and failed to focus ontheir mission. I sent them $100 the night they split with Planned Parenthood and I know that thousands of others did as well. I want it back. For their part, Planned Parenthood also gained millions from the publicity in the aftermath and didn’t really need the Komen money either but abortion isn’t just a right for these people,it’s more like a religion and ending breast cancer just wasn’t a basic tenet of thier religion while the unrestricted right to end the life of an unborn child at any stage is indeed part of their catechism.

James Fannin @ 9:46 pm – Karen Handel lost the Governor’s Race because she was even a worse Candidate for Governor. Period!
lets STOP all of the Foolery and Shenanigans! If Karen had TRULY been Up to the Job, she would have prevailed. Lets Stop all of the excuses of blame to absolve Karen of her own shortcomings.
Karen was not then and still is not mature enough to hold such a lofty position of great importance. It is only people like you who are enamored with such overwhelming mediocrity, to believe she is much more than she really is. She is not type of leadership this STATE need and requires at this time. She would be better served, if she wants to continue with a political career, to return to politics of a local nature. Where the issues are not so great and wrong decisions would not have such a dramatic impact or irreversible outcomes.
I Do NOT Hate Karen Handel as you stated. I Hate the actions of her intent that caused so much pain and despair to the many thousands of Women across this great Nation. A PAIN that is still being felt and carried on this very day, being inflicted on the many thousands of women by one Gov. Rick Perry of Texas supported by the same political mantra.

The wonderful peace-loving muslims marked the anniversary of 9/11 in Libya and Egypt resulting in the deaths of Americans. What can we expect from the ‘empty chair’ in response? Doubtless, another apology tour is necessary and increased financial aid will be a consideration.
America has no discernible foreign policy and has not had such since January, 2009. The only perceivable portion of our non-existent foreign policy has been appeasement, and we are reaping the dividends.
America faces no crisis in leadership. We have none . . .

CC, Obama has already issued a statement condemning these killings. Of course, Romney has issued his own empty, hollow criticism of that statement. This comes just one day after a Romney spokesperson dismissed the importance of foreign policy, saying that it’s just another “shiny object” used to distract voters from the real issues. What a jack ass.

@Carol 1:07. There was video sting at PP clinics in NY where the actress seeking the abortion stated very clearly her desire to have a boy and therefore the need to abort her female fetus. The PP rep were very supportive and non-judgmental. Gendercide? Not a problem at PP. http://www.lifenews.com/2012/05/31/second-video-shows-planned-parenthood-urging-sex-selection-abortion/
