God, Jerusalem and the Democratic National Convention

Charlotte, N.C. – While delegates waited for President Barack Obama’s speech tonight, Wednesday’s bungled handling of a fix to the Democratic platform – restoring the word “God” and reinserting the assertion that Jerusalem is the rightful capital of Israel – filled the news gap.

CNN this morning was filled with stuttering from Democratic leaders, who gave assurances that Obama was the fellow who insisted that the fix be made.

After this morning’s breakfast meeting of the Georgia delegation, several state lawmakers – including Senate Minority Leader Steve Henson of Decatur — recognized that Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa had failed to handle his gavel properly.

In charge of the debacle, Villaraigosa called for three voice votes before he gaveled the issue to a close – and each vote sounded the same. The first mistake, of course, was removing the words in the first place.

“It was a boneheaded decision, said U.S. Rep. David Scott of Atlanta. “I was just as upset as i could be but I was so proud of President Obama. He said, Nope, we’re putting God back in there and we’re putting Jerusalem back in there, and I think that gave him an opportunity to show how concerned he was about it.”

U.S. Rep. Adam West, R-Fla., has tried to stoke the issue with this ad today:

But there’s some push-back as well. George Bennett of the Palm Beach Post said the “Jerusalem” issue has pushed Florida Democrats into a corner:

Palm Beach County Democratic Chairman Mark Alan Siegel has rejected a call from Florida Democratic Party Chairman Rod Smith to resign over Siegel’s statement that fundamentalist Christians want to see Jews “slaughtered.”

Siegel instead will take an “indefinite leave of absence,” Smith said after huddling with Siegel and Palm Beach County Tax Collector Anne Gannon and state Rep. Lori Berman for about an hour this morning at the Florida delegation hotel.

Here’s the video that sparked the Florida furor, posted on a conservative website:

fundamentalist Christians want to see Jews “slaughtered.”

That is so not true. Anyone who knows the fundamentalist ‘christians’ know they just want to see the Jews burn in hell until they accept their lord and savior, baby Jesus. They love Israel, but only because in their book, a demented ‘holy man’ who saw seven headed monsters with seven seals and four horses, and other hallucinations, said that baby Jesus wouldn’t come back until Jerusalem was restored, at which time the Jews would have to accept Christ or go down into the eternal flames.

Off topic, but a puzzle to me, if Jesus was really a Jew, why does he have a Puerto Rican name?

I am sure God is more pleased with those who perform his work in deeds and action more than those who praise in words.

There is a big difference in the DEEDS and Actions of the Democratic Party and its supporters than the HOLLOW empty SHOUTS of words that always come from The Republican Party and its supporters.

In my opinion, the dim leaders should have allowed the majority to rule on this issue, or rather leave the platform as it was since the necessary 2/3 could obviously not be attained to change it.

Hussein fools only his faithful; he wanted the change solely for political reasons in his quest for ‘independent’ votes.

Although I am not a fundamentalist ‘christian’, I believe that they read the same Bible that I read. The Bible is very clear that the Jewish people are “God’s chosen people”, and I don’t think that the fundamentalist ‘christians’ wish the Jewish people to “burn in hell”.

. . . but that’s just my opinion, and you may be expert in such matters.

@cc – good points. As a Christian, I can assure you Christian’s don’t wish anyone to burn in hell. Exactly the opposite. Christian’s are trying to do Jesus’s commandment of spreading the Gospel. As the Bible says – John 3:16 – For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

@Auntie Christ
On the surface what you write looks rather foolish, but in reality it is spot on! People don’t like dealing in truth. I myself have NEVER understood that. There could be no clearer indication that the religion of Christianity was created with a specific purpose in mind. #1 You could never convince me at this pont in my life that a man named “Jesus” born in what really is the bosom of what is the African continent, clearly described as having hair like wool and bronze skin that he should be a blond-haired, blue-eyed depiction. Jesus = Spanish…Portugese…SLAVE TRADE. Duhhh! #2 Go to the east coast of Africa and you will find Fort Jesus, and you might also learn of the Good ship Jesus. That’s why I shake my head in bewilderment nowadays when I see Black people with their holy hands raised for “Jesus” to “come fore to carry me home”.

Another thing that has always thrown me – the KKK. The KKK quote Bible Scripture and throw the name “Jesus Christ” around like it’s confetti. Yet, they hate Jews. Yet still, Jesus Christ was a Jew. **crickets**

Jim, you really glossed over the voter fraud that went on at the convention. You don’t get to do do-overs for a vote, especially not two do-overs. Then the nos carried the vote, not the yeas. Not even close. But hey, this is how the dems do things. And Auntie and Louise, you’re both really sick individuals. Hopefully a lot of folks will read what you wrote so they can get more perspective of the people behind your postings.

Using hate to call out hate, i.e. calling Christians and Republicans hollow and empty, is an odd way to show support for your beliefs, whatever they are. It’s ugly when it comes from Christians – as it sometimes does – and it’s ugly when it comes from non-Christians.

And if you’re only capable of casting anyone who’s Christian (or non-Christian) in the same, broad light – and always a bad light – then it appears you don’t have much of an argument for what you do believe in.

As for small ball stones thrown around about Jesus’ name origin, or how western countries have depicted Jesus’ likeness, or any historical issue not even relating to the subject at hand – if this is truly the best you can do to further your point, then, as my grandmother used to say, “Lordy, you don’t have much of a point to make, now do you?”

This applies to all the fools responding to this article, along with the gentleman in the video.

Bernie (and all Christians who support a political party that endorses abortion):

You have said several times in your posts that you were ‘praying’ for people. To whom do you pray? If you profess Christianity, I would very much like to know how you justify abortion when the Bible teaches us that abortion is wrong?

Matthew 16:10 Jesus said, “”See that you do not despise one of these little ones, for I say to you, that their angels in heaven continually behold the face of My Father who is in heaven”.

Exodus 21:22-23 God said, “”And if men struggle with each other and strike a woman with child so that she has a miscarriage, yet there is no further injury, he shall surely be fined as the woman’s husband may demand of him; and he shall pay as the judges decide. But if there is any further injury, then you shall appoint as a penalty life for life.”

I’m a Christian – and a Republican – and I support legal abortion, with boundaries, i.e. 1st trimester, parental consent, life of the mother, rape, incest. I don’t want women to have abortions, but think it should be legal and safe, and we should counsel against it long before someone is in the position to make the decision. And marching in front of abortion clinics doesn’t fall into that category.

I have no problem with Christians who disagree with me, but please don’t preach to me about the Bible and what it says. And unless 1) you don’t eat shell fish, 2) require a holy, cleansing bath after a woman’s menses, and 3) follow every other law and decree in the Bible, you’re cherry picking. Be against abortion and proud of your stance, but don’t question my faith. The Bible says that’s wrong, too.

I agree, and I deplore the violence that has been perpetrated against doctors and people working in abortion clinics. I disagree vehemently with what they do, but you can’t resort to violence.

“please don’t preach to me about the Bible”

I wasn’t ‘preaching’; I asked a question. There IS a difference!

DannyX @ 6:42 pm:

“Republicans took God out when they declared war against the poor and the sick while worshiping the rich.”

I disagree. The Bible is very clear concerning charity and the care of the sick, but the Bible does not take that responsibility from the individual and give it to the government. I do not worship the rich but neither am I jealous of their wealth and I do not despise them for it.

Christians Don’t Want Jewish Death

Democrat leader Mark Siegel stated at the DNC that “fundamentalist Christians…want Jews to die and convert so they can bring on the second coming of their Lord.”
It wasn’t Glenn Beck, John Hagee, Hal Lindsey or any other Christian who first talked about the predicted massive slaughter of Jews during what Christians call the “end times.”
It was the ancient Hebrew prophet Zechariah who as long ago as 487 B.C. predicted that two-thirds of Jewry in the “last days” will be killed (Zech. 13:8).
All true Christian leaders view this scripture with horror and sympathy and NOT with glee!
Fundamentalist Christians are actually waiting for an “any-moment rapture” to Heaven (several years before the second coming) and do not believe that any event, including this final Jewish holocaust, has to happen before their escapist rapture happens.
More shocks. Fundamentalists have recently been learning that their rapture belief was first taught in Britain in 1830 and that it wasn’t widely adopted by Americans until the early 1900s. The documentation on all this is in “The Rapture Plot” (carried by online bookstores) which also reveals for the first time that, amazingly enough, this British theory has an anti-Jewish foundation! (For more info Google “Pretrib Rapture Politics.”)
Although no one is perfect, evangelical Christians (including fundamentalists) are still the best friends of Jewish persons and Israel.

[Spotted the above think-piece on the always exciting web. Hope it helps someone.]

No, we don’t want ANYONE to go to hell. It is an awful, awful place. Yes, the Jews do not realize Jesus as their savior, which is bad, but, we must still LOVE them as we are called to do and share the truth (and proof of it) to them. Frankly, Jesus was pronounced as Yeshua in Hebrew, meaning: Salvation. It was still hebrew.

Immanuel or Emmanuel
Bible the child whose birth was foretold by Isaiah (Isaiah 7:14) and who in Christian tradition is identified with Jesus
[from Hebrew `immānū'el, literally: God with us]

It’s ovious that ignorance of God’s holy Word is at play here, Read the word before you start bashing it…It’s like me bashing Islam and I have no clue about their religion. We have freedom of religion here would like to keep it…they worship the same God in another way I hope that their way will lead them on the right path, just as I beleive beliving the Holy Bible, true Christ Like People (Christians) will not treat unbleavers with haterid or try to belittle them. There are alot of people that say their Christians but don’t act like Jesus, and at times I am one of them, but I don’t hurt people on purpouse. I love my Lord Who I Believe In with all my heart, if you don’t just live your life and leave my Religion alone. Christians are not easly offended but we can be and these remarks dising my Savior has truly offended me…Isrial turned their backs on God more then once because of a ungodly KING and that is the path America is taking if Obama is re-elected.He chose to take God out of his platform, then had second thoughts. We need a man who will turn us back to God so that he can Bless America again and if you don’t want to enjoy the blessing of God that is your choice. You have that choice it because you live in the USA. You will have to learn how to be tolarant to Believers in Jesus Christ & the God of Abraham, Issic and Jacob.
