Charlotte, N.C. — Former President Jimmy Carter on Tuesday said President Barack Obama averted an economic crisis, ended an “ill-conceived war in Iraq,” and passed his health care overhaul in the face of “bitter” and “unprecedented partisan opposition.”
The four-minute video endorsement from Carter, who will turn 88 next month, was well received within the cramped confines of Time Warner Cable Arena. President Bill Clinton on Wednesday will formally nominate Obama for a second term — in person.
Carter’s grandson, state Sen. Jason Carter, D-Decatur, is a delegate to the Democratic National Convention, but was not in the hall this evening.
Said the elder Carter:
”In just four short years, [Obama] has worked to avert economic calamity, brought a dignified end to the ill-conceived war in Iraq, and signed into law historic health care reform – a dream that was already decades overdue when I called for it at this convention 36 years ago.
“And he’s done it all in the face of bitter, unyielding, in fact unprecedented partisan opposition.
“Overseas, President Obama has restored the reputation of the United States within the world community. Dialogue and collaboration are once again possible, with the return of a spirit of trust and good will to our foreign policy.”
President Bill Clinton, who will formally nominate Obama on Wednesday in person, is likely to emphasize a Democratic connection to the middle class. But Carter did as well:
”From President Obama’s first day in office, I’ve watched him – as I know you have – face these tough decisions and always put the interest of middle class Americans above other who, with a larger wallet, have an ever louder voice. I’ve admired him for that.
“Because President Obama sits behind that desk, every day people from Plains, Ga., to Pittsburgh have someone who’s on their side – thinking about them, working to give them an equal chance in life.”

Former President Jimmy is absolutely right in his comments about President Obama facing bitter and unprecedented partisan opposition.

Unprecedented, if you exclude any time prior to the last 4 years.
Otherwise, unprecedented opposition is what the former president faced. There was even a term coined for it: BDS.

No – that was the atmosphere surrounding President Bush. The vitriol and name calling was ever present and all encompassing – from Hollywood, the media, and Democrats.

Mr. Edwards:
A rather cynical columnist recently published an editorial outlining the consequences of an Obama reelection for the Democrats. His observation is that four more years of the Obama administration along with a Democratic senate would doom the Democrats once and for all. I tend to agree with him.

GaBlue, you really should read the Bible. It tells us to be generous to the poor. That means each person should give directly to the poor, and Republicans do much more of that than Dems according to surveys. But it is not generosity when the government seizes our resources with unfair taxes and then doles the money out to those dependent on entitlements in order to pay them to vote Democrat.
Democrats depend on ever increasing entitlements, unfair graduated taxation, and inflation-causing minimum wages to buy votes from those ignorant of the long term effects.

In 2008, Obama won these states by a combined margin of 53% to 46%, virtually identical to his national margin. The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Tuesday shows Mitt Romney attracting support from 47% of voters nationwide, while President Obama earns 45% of the vote. Two percent (2%) prefer some other candidate, and five percent (5%) are undecided.”

President Carter is and always was a good, decent man – plus exceedingly smart and hardworking. Washington’s establishment hated this Christian man from Plains who lived his faith in his whole life – even in the White House. The big money people tarred and feathered and ran him out of town, so they could get back to business as usual. No Georgia resident should speak ill of this good man.
I am, however, wondering how on earth he will accept the fact that today the Democratic Party literally took God out of their platform, with the approval of President Obama. They have shockingly endorsed homosexuality, illegal immigration, removed God, etc. of developing a totally hedonistic, amoral, atheistic political party. This shuns the millions of people who believe in God, be they Christian, Jewish, Muslim, or any other religion. This also disses all the black churches and their members, upon whom the President depends heavily for voter turnout. They are almost forcing people of faith of all races and religions to vote Republican!
It appears the Democrats are deliberately making a stark choice between the two parties – morality or amorality – believing that there are more people in our nation who choose amorality. I am stunned.

Here’s how Dems are playing nice:
South Carolina’s the State reports:
S.C. Democratic Chairman Dick Harpootlian, never a loss for a quick quip, tossed a few stinging one-liners at the Wednesday delegation breakfast.
On Gov. Nikki Haley participating in daily news briefings in a basement studio at the NASCAR Hall of Fame: “She was down in the bunker a la Eva Braun.”
Braun, along with her lover Adolf Hitler, committed suicide in a bunker as World War II was coming to an end.
The comparisons of Nazis and Hitler to the Republicans seems to be an emerging theme from this Democratic convention. Yesterday, a top Democratic delegate from Kansas compared Republican vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan to Hitler. The day before, a Democratic delegate from California compared Ryan to Nazi Joseph Goebbels.
Mild Mannered Moderate

@buford – I know right? Republicans are not Nazis! Everyone knows that fascism is a leftist doctrine. “Freedom from religion” is fascism. It says right in the constitution that the government can’t stop religion from being practiced. And I heard on fox the other day that the nazis advocated free health care just like Obama did. I also heard from my uncle in an email that his old veteran buddy sent him that bush’s daddy was a Nazi sympathizer; Its crazy.
They say Henry ford sent money to Hitler on his birthday in 1944….i mean…really? How can you send money in 1944 before the internet? And I remember the brownshirt comments my uncle made in another email he sent me about those kids chanting Obama songs being brownshirts!
Both sides are bad! Why can’t both sides be moderates like us? Both sides have policies that kill people. Both sides tell lies. Both sides have leaders that don’t tell the truth. Only we, we few in the moderate middle care about the truth enough to fact heck and show how both sides are weakqually bad!
